MAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Fernando Pina, Akron, Goalkeeper
R-Freshman, Houston, Texas
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Fernando Pina helped lead the Zips to a pair of 1-0 victories last weekend, earning shutouts against Ohio State Tuesday and at West Virginia Sunday night. Although he only recorded four saves, Pina managed his box well while logging all 180 minutes in goal, and made game-changing stops when called upon to preserve a pair of of one-goal victories. In particular, Pina turned away a dangerous shot from OSU's Zach Mason in the 84th minute during a frantic 20-minute period when the Buckeyes threw mass numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Then, after Akron jumped on top of the Mountaineers with a goal in the fourth minute, WVU's Jay Williams spearheaded a breakaway that resulted in a clear shot in front of the net but Pina smothered it to kill the counterattack.
Michael Wiest, Bowling Green, Goalkeeper
Senior; Naperville, Ill. (North)
Bowling Green senior goalkeeper Michael Wiest had a goals-against average of just 0.41 on the week, allowing a total of one goal in a pair of double-overtime matches on the road. Wiest had three saves vs. both Marshall and Northern Kentucky, as the Falcons battled to a 1-1 tie vs. the Thundering Hard and a 0-0 draw against the Norse. The shutout vs. NKU was his third of the season. On the year, the team tri-captain has 37 saves, a saves percentage of .804 and three complete-match shutouts. He now has 16 clean sheets in his career.
