Western Michigan 70, Eastern Michigan 55
CLEVELAND, OHIO--The third-seeded Western Michigan Broncos advanced to the semifinals after beating seventh-seeded Eastern Michigan 70-55. The Broncos will play the second-seeded Ohio Bobcats at 9:00 p.m. Friday.
With the Broncos victory, the semifinals will feature the top four seeds in the MAC.
Western Michigan trailed for most of the first half, but over the last 4:45 of the first half, the Broncos put together a 10-1 run and held the Eagles without a field goal over that stretch. After the 2:53 mark in the first half, the Broncos never trailed the rest of the game.
Shane Whittington led the Broncos with 23 points and eight rebounds as Western Michigan improved to 20-11. Three other Bronco players, Darius Paul (14), David Brown (12) and Brandon Pokley (11) also scored in double-figures.
In the second half Eastern Michigan cut it to one at 50-49 with a Jamell Harris bucket, but the Broncos closed the game out on a 20-6 run.
Daylen Harrison was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 14 points. The Eagles fell to 16-18 on the year.
Western Michigan now joins Akron, Ohio and Kent State with 20 or more wins on the season.
The Broncos advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2011, where WMU will meet No. 2 Ohio University Friday in the second game of the evening.
