MAC Women's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron tennis team concluded the third week of the dual-match season with a 6-1 loss to 73rd-ranked Princeton on Sunday at LaTuchie Tennis Center.

 

Facing a ranked opponent for the fifth-straight outing, the Zips (1-5) dropped the doubles point and five singles matches, two in a third set, to the visiting Tigers (2-1).

 

In doubles, the Princeton pair of Katherine Flanigan and Emily Hahn won 8-3 over Madison Cohen and Angelika Jogasuria at No. 2, as did the 58th-ranked duo of Monica Chow and Katie Goepel 8-1 against Ksenia Berestetska and Andrea Duva at No. 3.

 

For the second time in three days, the Zips' No. 1 doubles team of Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria took down a ranked foe. Today it came by way of an 8-7 (4) defeat of 45th-ranked Lindsay Graff and Amanda Muliawan. On Friday, Pantusart and Jogasuria upset Missouri's 26th-ranked duo of Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Elisha Gabb, 9-7.

 

Akron claimed its point with a 6-3, 6-2 win by Berestetska at No. 5 singles over Goepel.

 

Princeton won in straight sets at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles. At the first flight it was Graff over Pantusart, 6-3, 6-2. At the second flight, 52nd-ranked Muliawan won the opening set 6-0 and UA's Olga Shkundina retired due to injury prior to the start of the second set. In the fourth position, it was Chow over Angelika Jogasuria, 6-1, 6-4.

 

Nos. 3 and 6 took a third set to decide a winner. At No. 3, Angelina Jogasuria won 6-2, then gave up 6-4 and 6-3 scores to Flanigan. At No. 6, Cohen rebounded from a 6-1 first set loss with a 6-4 win in the second, then fell 6-0 in the third to Hahn.

 

Akron hits the road next weekend, competing at both Dayton and Wright State on Saturday. The Zips take on the Flyers at 2:30 p.m. ET and the Raiders at 7 p.m.

 

Zips Notebook:  Angelina Jogasuria finished the weekend with an overall record of 3-1 (2-0 singles, 1-1 doubles) ... she also improved to 4-1 this season when playing at No. 3 singles ... Ksenia Berestetska went 2-0 at No. 5 singles this weekend, not giving up more than three points in any set and winning one of those by a count of 6-0 ... prior to taking on Princeton today, the Zips met up with No. 50 Penn State (L, 5-2; Jan. 20), No. 4 USC (L, 4-0; Jan. 26), No. 55 Tulane (L, 4-1; Jan. 27) and No. 52 Missouri (L, 4-3, Feb. 1).

 

 

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to visiting 52nd-ranked Missouri on Friday afternoon at LaTuchie Tennis Center.

 

Akron (1-4) claimed the doubles point thanks to a comeback victory at the third flight, where Angelika Jogasuria and Madison Cohen rebounded from a 5-0 deficit to make it 7-all and then win the early point 9-7 over Alex Clark and Madison Rhyner.

 

The first flight of doubles also featured a gutsy performance by the Zips as Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria took down the nation's 26th-ranked duo of Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Elisha Gabb. The UA pair led 4-3, but Gaytan-Leach and Gabb tied it at 5-all and then led 6-5. Pantusart and Jogasuria tied it at 6-all and 7-all en route to a 9-7 victory.

 

At second doubles, Missouri's Rachel Stuhlmann and Maria Christensen downed Olga Shkundina and Ksenia Berestetska, 8-2.

 

In singles, Missouri (3-1) won in straight sets at Nos. 1, 2 and 4, and needed a three-set score to claim No. 6. Shkundina lost 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 to Gaytan-Leach, Pantusart was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 by Stuhlmann, and Angelika Jogasuria fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 to Christensen. UA's Cohen won the first set of No. 6, 6-2, but Clark claimed a 6-2 win in both the second and third set.

 

Akron earned one point at No. 3 singles, where Angelina Jogasuria defeated Gabb, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 5, where Berestetska topped Rhyner, 6-0, 6-3.

 

 

 

 

DAYTON, Ohio - The Ball State women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season after posting back-to-back wins over Wright State (7-0) and Dayton (5-2) Friday.  The 5-1 start marks one of the best starts for the Cardinals since the 2007-08.

 

Against Dayton, the Cardinals would fall behind early after losing the doubles point.  

 

In singles, Ball State took control early, with Courtney Earnest winning quickly in straight sets over Maureen Stevens at the No. 3 spot.  Kristel Sanders and Bethany Moore would take down their opponents in their respective positions to put Ball State up 3-1 over the Flyers.   Then Ashlyn Rang would seal the victory at No. 6 singles after posting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Erin Fibrandt.

 

The Cardinals started the day strong after sweeping Wright State, 7-0 in the morning match.  

 

Ball State took the doubles point with wins from Courtney Wild and Earnest at the No. 1 position defeating Kayla Tuscany and Alex Bastock by a score of 8-0.  Moore paired up with Kristel Sanders also winning 8-0 against Taylor Hines and Amy Nini at the No. 2 spot.

 

After that, the Cardinals took their momentum into singles action winning all six matches in straight sets.  Earnest did not give up a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hine at No. 3 singles.  

 

The Ball State women's tennis team continues non-conference action when it hosts in-state rival Butler Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.

 

 

 

 

The Bowling Green State University tennis team's path to victory on Sunday afternoon had a familiar ring to it.  For the fourth consecutive match, the Falcons swept all three doubles matches, and carried that momentum into singles play.  On Sunday (Feb. 3), that formula resulted in a 6-1 win over the University of Evansville at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

 

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 5-1 on the season, and BGSU has won five matches in a row since a road loss to No. 19 Notre Dame.  The Purple Aces drop to 2-3 in dual-match play.

 

"We got off to a very strong, aggressive start in doubles play, and continued that trend into singles," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean.  "We had solid performances up and down the lineup today."

 

For the fourth time in as many matches, the Falcons captured all three doubles contests.  In all four of those matches, BGSU has then taken that momentum into singles action, winning at least five of the six matches to secure the win.

 

On Sunday, BGSU dropped a total of just four games in the three doubles matches.  At the third flight, the Falcons' duo of senior Jade Johnson and freshman Drew Fillis picked up an 8-3 win over UE's Gaby Fifer and Kelsey Costales.

 

The other two doubles matches saw the Falcons lose just one combined game.  At flight number two, seniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb swept the Aces' Mina Milovic and Marina Moreno, 8-0, while BGSU juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland captured an 8-1 decision over Natasha James and Marketa Trousilova.

 

In singles play, Trousilova squeaked past Eccleston at the third flight, winning a 7-5 first set en route to victory, but that would be UE's only win of the day.

 

The top-two flights saw BGSU juniors win by identical scores.  Both Chiricosta at the top flight and Reuland at the second level won 6-2 opening sets, then reeled off six-straight victories in the second set.  Chiricosta defeated James, while Reuland topped Milovic.

 

Grubb and fellow senior Mary Hill each lost a total of just four games, as Hill downed Moreno at the fourth flight and Grubb bested Costales at the fifth.  The sixth flight saw freshman Katie Brozovich lose only five games in her straight-sets win over Fifer.

 

Over the last five matches, BGSU has a combined record of 27-3 in singles and 14-1 in doubles.

 

BGSU's seven-match homestand continues next week with two more duals at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.  The Falcons will host Cleveland State on Friday afternoon (Feb. 8), before meeting Cincinnati Sunday morning (Feb. 10).

The Bowling Green State University tennis team began a lengthy homestand on a successful note, posting a 6-1 win over Youngstown State University Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2) in non-conference action at the Perrysburg Tennis Club.

 

With the win, the Falcons are now 4-1 in dual-match play on the young season.  BGSU has won four consecutive matches after a loss to No. 19 Notre Dame last weekend.  The Penguins dropped to 0-2 on the year.

 

For the third consecutive outing, BGSU swept all three doubles matches.  Seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson lost just one game in a third-flight win, and juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland did not lose a single game in their victory at the second flight.

 

The first flight was much more closely contested, but BG came out on top.  Seniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb battled to a tiebreaker with YSU's Paula de Man and Marta Burak, and the Penguin duo took a 3-0 lead in the 'breaker.  But, Eccleston and Grubb responded by winning seven of the next eight points for a 7-4 victory.

 

Saturday's match marked the first time that Grubb played at the number-one doubles flight in her BGSU career.

 

The Falcons rode the momentum of that doubles success into singles play, winning five matches in the minimum number of sets.

 

Grubb breezed through her fifth-flight match with Carolyn Jesko, reeling off 12 consecutive wins for the 6-0, 6-0 sweep.  Grubb has now won seven-straight singles matches.  In sixth-flight action, freshman Katie Brozovich did not lose a game, albeit in an abbreviated match.  Brozovich captured three games in the first set before her opponent, Gimena Puppo, was forced to retire.

 

Chiricosta lost only four games in a second-flight win over Burak, while Eccleston lost just five in a victory against Lauren Hankle at the third flight.  Hill was extended to a first-set tiebreaker by Annina Brendel in their fourth-flight match, but the BG co-captain captured that 'breaker, then went on to a 6-4 win in the second set to capture the match.

 

YSU's lone win came at the top flight, where de Man defeated Reuland.

 

Chiricosta and Eccleston each picked up their 65th career singles win on Saturday afternoon.  That duo is tied for 15th in BGSU history on that list.

 

Three other current Falcons are ranked on the career singles victory chart, as Reuland is 20th on that list (61 wins), Hill 23rd (51) and Grubb 25th (49).

 

On the doubles chart, Eccleston, who currently ranks third in school history, won her 83rd career match.  She is just one doubles win shy of second-place Jenny Cheung (1995-98), and is only six away from matching BGSU career leader Christine Chiricosta (2008-11), who had 89 doubles wins as a Falcon.

 

Grubb's doubles win was the 60th of her career, tying her for 16th on that list.  Nikki Chiricosta is several spots ahead of Grubb, sitting 14th with 64 career doubles wins.  Hill (T-18th, 59 doubles wins), Johnson (T-21st, 58) and Reuland (23rd, 57) all sit among the top 25 Falcons of all time in doubles wins.

 

On the combined career wins list, all six BGSU veterans are ranked among the top 30.  Eccleston is sixth in school history with 148 wins, and is just one victory away from moving into a third-place tie.  A trio of BG teammates -- Abby Bratton, Meghan Rhodes and Erika Wasilewski (all of who played from 1998-2001) had 149 wins apiece in their respective BGSU careers.

 

Chiricosta now has 129 total wins at BG to place 14th, while Reuland is 21st with 118 victories.  Hill and Grubb are 23rd and 24th, respectively, as Hill has 110 wins and Grubb 109.  Johnson now has 89 career victories, ranking 30th on that list.

 

On the season, Chiricosta has a team-best 31-11 record, while Reuland is 29-13.  Four other Falcons have at least 20 total victories, while every member of the team has 14 or more wins and is at least four games over the .500 mark.

 

BGSU's homestand continues on Sunday morning (Feb. 3) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.  The Falcons will play the second of seven consecutive home matches, facing Evansville in a 9:30 a.m. start.

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY -  The University at Buffalo women's tennis team improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over West Virginia on Sunday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center.  The victory was UB's second straight over a BCS conference school and its first ever win over a school from the Big 12.

 

Buffalo clinched the doubles point easily behind an 8-0 shutout from UB's third doubles team of Marta Stoyanova and Laura Fernandez.  The Bulls also picked up a victory at first doubles from Miranda Podlas and Tanvi Shah, who won 8-3 and improved to 7-1 on the season.  West Virgina won the contest at second doubles.

 

In singles play, UB won five of the six matches, capped off at number one singles where Shah defeated her opponent, 6-1, 6-0, in a match that lasted well under an hour.  The Mountaineers won at fifth singles to pull within 2-1 in the match, but Buffalo answered back with a victory at sixth singles as Anamaria Candanoza won, 6-4, 6-4.  Podlas clinched the match with a victory at second singles, winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) and then easily winning the second set, 6-1.  

 

The Bulls continued their success after clinching the match as Fernandez overcame a first set loss to win in a super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.  Senior Tamara Markovic closed out the 6-1 win at fourth singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory.

 

"I thought our entire team played wonderful and really stepped up today," said head coach Kristen Ortman.  "Mentally, i thought we were disciplined all afternoon and physically we were the stronger team out there.  It is a long season, but I am excited with start we have gotten off to."

 

The Bulls have now begun the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

 

Buffalo will now head to New England next weekend for a pair of matches beginning at Harvard on Saturday morning.  These are UB's first road matches of the season.

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team stood toe-to-toe with the No. 71 Blue Demons of DePaul University, but was unable to score the upset, falling 6-1 on the road Sunday, Feb. 3, at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.

 

It was the second home match of the year for the Blue Demons, as the team improved to 3-2 overall in dual match play. EMU fell to 3-5 with the loss.

 

"We are not playing our best tennis right now," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We ran into a solid DePaul team that outplayed us today.  We definitely need to get to work to get better.  We can learn from this match and get prepared for next weekend."

 

DePaul swept the doubles point, getting off to a 1-0 lead in the match. Klara Supejova the lone Eagle to win a singles match as the Blue Demons took five of the six matchups.

 

Eastern Michigan will take some time to regroup before returning to action Friday, Feb. 8, against the Cardinals of the University of Louisville at the Chippewa Club.

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami earned a split of its two tennis matches Sunday, winning 6-1 against California (Pa.) in the morning before falling to Xavier 4-3 later in the day

 

In the morning match, the RedHawks opened a 1-0 lead by winning at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Christiana Raymond and Alix Thurman fell behing 4-1 before winning seven straight games in an 8-4 decision. Ana Rajkovic and Chloe Heerden bolted to a 4-1 lead enroute to another 8-4 win. The Vulcans took the No. 1 tilt by an 8-5 score.

 

Miami quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Raymond, who moved into the No. 1 spot Sunday after playing second earlier in the year, won the last nine games of her 6-3, 6-0 decision, while Heerden won the first nine games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

 

The Vulcans, ranked eighth in the country in Division II, picked up their first point at No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-2, but shortly after, Nimisha Mohan clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 2. The RedHawks added its final two points with wins by Thurman, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4) at No. 3 and Rajkovic, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.

 

The RedHawks were without Christine Guerrazzi, who normally plays at No. 4, because of illness.

 

In the nightcap, Xavier took the doubles point with wins in the bottom flights, 8-6 at No. 2 and 8-4 at No. 3. Though the point was already decided, the remaining match proved to be epic with Guerrazzi and Mohan battling Kally Alkire and Katie Pleiman. A 6-4 Miami lead was the biggest of the match, until the Musketeer duo won two straight enroute to a 7-7 tie. The tiebreaker took 26 points before Miami escaped with a 14-12 win. During the final game, there were 21 mini-breaks, including nine straight at one time, and seven failed match points -- four against Miami and three against Xavier.

 

The teams split the first two singles matches in easy fashion. Xavier captured the No. 1 match 6-1, 6-1, but Thurman closed the gap to 2-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3. The Musketeers moved the score to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2, but Miami gained a point right back when Guerrazzi took a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4.

 

The final two matches both headed to a third set as Miami rallied back after being down one set to none. Ramona Costea and Heerden were both serving 3-2, but were broken. Heerden broke back and later led 5-4, while Costea found herself in a similar 5-4 hole. Xavier clinched the match when Andrea Wolf broke Costea again for the 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 No. 5 victory. Heerden held on to win at No. 6 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the RedHawks' final point.

 

Miami (2-4) returns to action next Sunday when it travels to Marshall.

 

 

 

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami captured the doubles point, but dropped five of six tightly-contested singles matches Saturday, in a 5-2 decision to Eastern Kentucky at the Riverside Athletic Club. 

 

The No. 2 doubles match was decided quickly as Christiana Raymond and Alix Thurman won the first three games then answered a break with five straight games for an 8-1 victory. The other two matches started in Miami's favor before the scores tightened up. At No. 1, Eastern Kentucky rallied from a 4-1 deficit for an 8-5 win, while at No. 3, the RedHawks were up 4-2 before dropping three straight. But Ana Rajkovich and Chloe Heerden fought back, closing out the match by taking four straight games. Rajkovice ended the 8-5 match with back-to-back aces. 

 

Eastern Kentucky (3-2) established itself early in singles play, winning the first set in four matches. The Colonels evened the score at 1-1 by winning at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3. The teams split the next two matches in dominating fashion. Raymond won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, just seconds before EKU took the top flight, 7-5, 6-0. 

 

Eastern Kentucky took the lead 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5, but the final two matches went to third sets. No. 4 Christine Guerrazzi won her first set 6-3, but dropped the last two by the same 6-3 scores. At No. 6, Heerden fell behind 6-4, before forcing her extra set 6-1. However, a costly early break lifted the Colonels to a 6-4 win in the third.

 

 

 

 

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Northern Illinois (3-1) suffered its first loss of the spring after running off wins in its first three matches. The defeat came in a 6-1 decision to Southern Illinois (1-1) on Sunday afternoon at Boylan Tennis Center.

 

"Our youth really showed today," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We played very hard but showed some immaturity. We are more talented but just need to get battle-tested, and that comes with experience. We need to get better at believing in who we are and what we do."

 

The Huskies came out strong at No. 1 doubles as Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) cruised to an 8-2 win over Anita Lee and Korey Love. But NIU lost 8-0 and 8-1 in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, to give SIU the doubles point.

 

In singles, Youel was strong again at the No. 1 slot, scoring a 6-2, 6-5 win over Melanie Delsart. However, she was the only Huskie to pick up a singles point in the match. Youel, the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, is now a perfect 4-0 in doubles play and 4-0 in singles play this spring.

 

The Huskies return to action next weekend in Edwardsville, Ill. NIU will take on Saint Louis at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 9 and SIU-Edwardsville at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10.

EAST LANSING, MI - Toledo (2-3) could not get anything going against undefeated Michigan State on Saturday night as they were swept 7-0 inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Rockets drop to 2-3 on the young season and return home for two matches next weekend.

 

"Michigan State played tough and they were the better team today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "I believe these kind of matches help with the development of our players the most."

 

The best performance came from junior Chrissy Coffman in a battle for the No. 2 singles match. Coffman went up against MSU's Catherine Parenteau and nearly came through with the upset, falling in three sets 7-5, 6-7(6), 11-9.

 

"Coffman played an unbelievable match for us," Mauntler said. "She is such a fighter and is always displaying what it means to be a Rocket to her teammates." 

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold will host Cincinnati and California U. of PA on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women's tennis team came up short in a home match against Cleveland State on Friday night. UT swept the doubles competition, but fell 4-2 in singles play to drop its record to 2-2 on the season.

 

"This was a tough loss because we started off so strong in doubles," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "We're a young team and will learn from this match."

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold have played well in doubles competition through the first four matches of the 2013 campaign. Freshmen Emily Mazzola and Mackenzie Bowman claimed their fourth doubles win by a score of 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Lexy Pitt and junior Chrissy Coffman took the No. 2 match, while senior Silvia Carvajal paired up with freshman Katelyn Nguyen for a victory in the third contest.

 

UT couldn't carry the momentum gained from doubles over to the singles action as Coffman and Mazzola each won their matchup. Playing at the No. 2 singles position, Coffman came away victorious after CSU's Alex Power retired in the third set with Coffman leading. 

 

Mazzola notched the first singles victory of her career by winning in straight sets over Ellen Folkers at No. 6.

 

Pitt and Nguyen each took their matches to a third set, but could not find a way to gain another point for UT.
