MAC Women's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

LOS ANGELES - The University of Akron tennis team concluded its participation in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-1 loss to 55th-ranked Tulane on Sunday afternoon at USC's Marks Stadium.

 

Tulane (1-1) opened the day by taking the doubles point with wins at the second and third flights, then clinched match point with straight-set victories at the second, fifth and sixth singles positions.

 

In doubles, the Zips duo of Olga Shkundina and Ksenia Berestetska lost 8-1 at No. 2 to Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson as did the UA pair of Andrea Duva and Madison Cohen 8-2 at No. 3 to Emma Levy and Jenny Hois. When the early point was claimed, the score at No. 1 for UA's Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria versus Klara Vyskocilova and Ipek Birol sat at 4-all.

 

Angelina Jogasuria claimed the Zips' lone point by way of a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Hois. Her twin, Angelika Jogasuria, was in a third set at No. 4 when Tulane claimed the match victory, and Shkundina held a 4-2 lead in the second set at No. 1 after dropping the first set 6-4 to Vuskocilova.

 

"We played hard today in singles, and I'm please with the effort and the progress we made on this trip," third-year Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "With injuries and illness causing some roadblocks, we did well." 

 

Tulane's singles wins came from Levy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 over Pantusart, Thornton 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 versus Berestetska and Magnusson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 against Cohen.

 

Akron (1-3) returns home to play host to 53rd-ranked Missouri and 71st-ranked Princeton next Friday (noon ET) and Sunday (10 a.m.), respectively, at LaTuchie Tennis Center. 

  

Zips Notebook: Akron was facing its third-straight ranked opponent (No. 4 USC on Saturday, No. 50 Penn State on Jan. 21) ... the Zips dropped to 0-2 all-time versus Tulane (7-0 loss on March 15, 2011).

LOS ANGELES - The University of Akron tennis team dropped a 4-0 match to fourth-ranked USC on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Marks Stadium.

 

Due to inclement weather the match was played out on three courts, beginning with Nos. 1, 3 and 5 singles and then filled down the line with Nos. 2, 4 and 6 pending a decision in the match. Doubles was only to be contested if singles play resulted in a match tied 3-all.

 

The Trojans (2-0) posted wins in order at Nos. 1, 5, 3 and 4 to claim match point.

 

UA's Olga Shkundina lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 to 19th-ranked Zoe Scandalis, Ksenia Berestetska fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 to Valeria Pulido, Angelina Jogasuria was topped 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 to Giuliana Olmos and Angelika Jogasuria was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 by Kaitlyn Christian. 

 

With the match clinched, Akron players also were bested at Nos. 2 and 6. The highlight of the day for UA came at No. 2, where Prang Pantusart rebounded from a 6-2 loss to 14th-ranked Danielle Lao in the first set to lead 3-0 in the second. Lao ended up taking a 7-5 win in the second set. At No. 6, Madison Cohen lost 6-3, 6-2 to Ellie Yates.

 

"Despite what some of the score lines would indicate, I feel we played very well today against one of the top teams in the nation," third-year head coach Brandon Padgett said "If we can play with the kind of energy we brought today throughout the rest of the season we will be just fine."

 

The Zips (1-2) face 55th-ranked Tulane tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET. Tulane lost 4-2 to 67th-ranked UC Irvine today.

 

Zips Notebook: The Zips and Trojans were facing off for the first time on the tennis court ... Akron matched up with its second-consecutive nationally ranked foe, after a 5-2 loss to then 50th-ranked Penn State at home on Jan. 20.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ball State women's tennis team (3-1) dropped a 6-1 decision to Michigan State (4-0) in East Lansing Sunday afternoon.

 

The Spartans took the early 1-0 advantage over the Cardinals after sweeping doubles action.  At No. 2 doubles,  Courtney Wild and Bethany Moore came up short only losing by two (8-6) to Nicole Herzog and Katarina Lingl.

 

Courtney Earnest highlighted singles action for the Cardinals after her 6-2, 6-2 defeat over Olga Chernova at the No. 3 spot.  Wild, Moore and Sanders all took the Spartans to three sets but lost in their respective positions.

 

The Ball State women's tennis team will continue non-conference action when it plays in Dayton, Ohio next Friday as it faces Wright State at 11 a.m. and then Dayton in the afternoon match which will begin at 2 p.m.

 

 

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win the Cardinals remain undefeated with a 3-0 overall mark while UW-Milwaukee falls to 1-1.

 

The Cardinals took the doubles point from the Panthers to give BSU the early 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. The twosome of Courtney Wild and Bethany Moore defeated Kelly Fritz and Dana Shannon at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-3. Ashlyn Rang paired up with Kristel Sanders for the 8-3 victory over Brittany Skemp and Kristin Kurer at the No. 3 spot.

 

In singles action, Wild beat Fritz 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. On court three Earnest defeated Bailey 6-2, 6-1 while teammates Moore and Rang were also winners in their respective positions.

 

 

 

 

The Bowling Green State University tennis team won all six singles matches in straight sets Sunday morning (Jan. 27), capping off a 7-0 sweep of host Chicago State University.  The match was held at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.

 

With the win, the Falcons are now 3-1 in dual-match play on the young season.  BGSU has won three consecutive matches after a loss to No. 19 Notre Dame last weekend.  The Cougars dropped to 0-3 on the year.

 

All eight team members picked up at least one win on Sunday, with senior Jade Johnson, juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland and freshman Katie Brozovich all winning at both singles and doubles.

 

Doubles play saw BGSU lose a total of just five games while winning the requisite 24.  The closest match was at the top flight, while Reuland teamed with senior co-captain Maddy Eccleston for an 8-3 win over Karyn Emeralda and Marnie Perez-Ochoa.

 

At each of the other two flights, the Falcons rolled along to 8-1 wins.  The Falcons' second-flight duo of Chiricosta and Johnson downed CSU's Carynne Lloyd and Viviene Noel, while Brozovich combined with fellow freshman Drew Fillis for a convincing victory over Ruta Grinvalde and Sabrine Navarro at flight number three.

 

In singles play, it was more of the same, as the Brown and Orange captured six matches in the minimum 12 sets.  Reuland and Emeralda battled through the closest match, score-wise, at the top flight.  The BG junior outlasted Emeralda, 7-5, in the opening set, before closing out the victory with a 6-3 decision in the second set.

 

Two Falcons, Brozovich and Chiricosta, lost just one total game, while senior co-captain Mary Hill dropped just two.  Chiricosta swept Lloyd in flight-two action, capping off the win with a 6-0 second set.  Brozovich won her opening set by a 6-0 count against Grinvalde, and the BG freshman lost only one game in the second set.  Hill defeated Perez-Ochoa in third-flight action by a pair of identical 6-1 scores.

 

Johnson lost only three total games, all in the opening set, in her sixth-flight victory over Navarro. Senior Katie Grubb also posted a straight-sets win, defeating Noel at the fourth flight.

 

The win over CSU came less than 24 hours after the Falcons defeated Drake, 6-1.  On the weekend, Chiricosta and Reuland each had four wins without a loss, while four of their teammates -- Brozovich, Eccleston, Grubb and Johnson -- each went 3-0.  Hill had a 2-1 record over the two days, while Fillis won her lone match.

 

Eccleston now has 82 doubles wins in her career, good for third place on the BGSU career list.  She is just seven wins away from tying the school record, held by Christine Chiricosta (2008-11).

 

Johnson's two wins on Sunday give her a total of 87 combined career wins at BGSU.  She is now tied for 30th on that school list.  In fact, no fewer than six current Falcons -- every one of the team's non-freshmen -- are ranked among the top 30 on that BG career chart.

 

BGSU now returns home for a lengthy stay.  The Brown and Orange will play the next seven matches in Northwest Ohio, beginning with a pair of duals next weekend.  BG will face Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2) at 2:30 p.m., before taking on Evansville on Sunday (Feb. 3) at 9:30 a.m.  Both matches will be held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

The Bowling Green State University tennis team got a weekend trip to Chicagoland off to a successful start Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26), defeating Drake University by a 6-1 final.  The neutral-site match was held at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.

 

With the win, the Falcons are now 2-1 in dual-match play on the young season.  BGSU has won two consecutive matches after a loss to No. 19 Notre Dame last weekend.  Drake dropped to 1-1 on the year.

 

In doubles play, BGSU had little trouble winning the matches at the top-two flights.  At the top level, juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland lost only two games in a win over Klavdija Rebol and Jordan Eggleston, while seniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb did not lose a single game in a second-flight victory against Lea Kozulic and Maddie Johnson.

 

In third-flight action, BGSU seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson fell behind by a 7-2 score vs. Nell Boyd and Evy Van Genechten. The Falcon duo battled back, however, forcing a tiebreaker and capturing it by a 7-5 score.

 

The Falcons took that momentum into singles action, winning five of the six matches, including three in straight sets.  At the sixth flight, freshman Katie Brozovich did not lose a single game in her dismantling of Amanda Dick.

 

Chiricosta lost only three total games at the second flight, defeating Rebol in quick fashion.  Grubb topped Eggleston in the opening set in fifth-flight action, and the BG senior held a 2-0 lead in the second set before Eggleston was forced to retire.

 

Two Falcons were forced to a third-set tiebreaker.  At the number-one flight, Reuland dropped her opening set to Boyd in a tiebreaker, but rallied back for a 6-4 victory in the second set. In their third-set 'breaker, Reuland came away with a 10-7 win.

 

The third flight saw Eccleston take the early lead with a 6-4 win, only to have Kozulic battle back for a second-set victory.  In the tiebreaker, though, the BGSU co-captain captured a 10-6 decision.

 

Drake's lone point came at the fourth flight, where Van Genechten posted a victory over Hill.

 

"We had some challenging matches today," said head coach Penny Dean.  "Drake is a good team; they are very solid.  We got some good wins this afternoon.

 

"I was particularly pleased with the comeback by Jade and Mary at third doubles.  They faced six match points along the way, but they came back, won the tiebreaker, and gave us great momentum that propelled us into singles play."

 

With two wins on Saturday, Eccleston moved into sole possession of sixth place on the BGSU combined career wins list.  She now has 145 victories as a Falcon, moving ahead of current BG assistant coach Cindy (Mikolajewski) Yonker on that list.

 

Eccleston also moved into a tie for 15th place on the BGSU singles wins list, and now has 64. Chiricosta and Reuland are right behind, with 63 and 60, respectively.

 

All six of the BGSU returnees are ranked among the top-25 players in school history on the doubles wins list. Eccleston sits in third place on that chart with 81 doubles wins, just eight shy of the school record. Chiricosta is 15th with 62 doubles victories, while Grubb (59), Hill (58), Johnson (56) and Reuland (55) all are ranked between 17th and 23rd on that list.

 

This season, Chiricosta now has an overall record of 27-11, while Reuland is 26-12.  Grubb passed the 20-win plateau on Saturday, and now has a 21-9 record this season.  Brozovich, like Grubb, picked up her 20th victory of the year, and is 20-15 overall.

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis teams claimed the top four matches in singles, defeating Pittsburgh in its spring opener, 4-3, at the Miller Tennis Center.  The victory improves Buffalo's record to 2-0 on the season.

 

The Panthers took the doubles point to lead early in the match, winning contests at second and third doubles.  The Bulls claimed victory in first singles as the team of Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas defeated Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington, 8-5., the first loss for the Pittsburgh duo this season.  It would be a successful day for Podlas and Shah, who both won their singles matches as well.

 

Pittsburgh opened up a 2-0 lead in the match with a win at sixth singles, but Podlas got the Bulls on the board at second singles as she defeated Lu, 6-1, 6-1.  Shah tied up the match with a victory at first singles, defeating Washington, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.  Pittsburgh regained a 3-2 lead with a three-set victory at fifth singles, but the Bulls tied it up again as senior Tamara Markovic defeated Molly Wickman at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-3.  That victory set up a winner take all match at third singles where sophomore transfer Laura Fernandez was facing Gabrielle Catanzariti.  Fernandez dropped the first set, but came back to win the second set 6-4 and force a third set.  That final set also went down to the wire before Fernandez claimed a 7-4 win in a third-set tiebreaker after being down 4-2 early to clinch the victory for the Bulls.

 

"The discipline, work ethic and determination that our team showed was outstanding and really paid off in the end," said head coach Kristen Ortman.  "  Tennis is a game of desire and today we just wanted it more."

 

The Bulls remain home next Sunday when they host West Virginia at the Miller Tennis Center at 11:30 am.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Despite dropping the doubles point, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team rebounded to win five of the singles matches to pick up a 5-2 non-conference victory against IPFW Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness. With the victory, EMU snaps its four-match losing skid and ups its mark to 2-4 on the year. On the flipside, IPFW remains winless at 0-2.

 

"IPFW played some great doubles, and put us in a quick hole," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We responded well in singles and had to battle hard to get the win."

 

In doubles, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic) fell to Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer, 8-7. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) were tripped up by Theresa Neumeyr and Miloslava Shustova, 8-3.  At No. 3 the EMU duo of Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary) produced an 8-3 victory over Kristine Lindal/Marcy Huck.

 

On court one, Mebuke and Henestrosa battled to three sets before Mebuke walked away with the 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory. At No. 2 singles, Supejova crusied to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lindal. Kiefer topped Friedrichs 6-2 in the first set before Friedrichs tallied wins in sets two and three, 6-3 and  6-3.  Toncheva downed Neumeyr on court four as she recorded an Eagle victory, 7-5, 6-3. Bhatia tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win in a match-up against Huck. IPFW's lone singles victory came when Shustova defeated Biro, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 6.

 

The team opens the home portion of its schedule Friday, Feb. 1, against the University of Detroit Mercy. First serve is schedule for 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Racket Club.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Miami dropped the first doubles match, but captured the doubles point and the first four singles ties enroute to a 6-1 victory over over Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at the Western Fitness and Tennis Club. The win was the first in three tries for the RedHawks this season.

 

Cincinnati (0-3) started doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 2 before Miami earned its first victory of the year. Freshmen Ana Rajkovic and Chloe Heerded bolted to leads of 2-0 and 5-1 enroute to an 8-2 triumph at No. 3. The win snapped a string of 19 straight individual match losses in 2013. The RedHawks clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win by Nimisha Mohan and Christine Guerrazzi at No. 1. The duo took the final four games after the Bearcats had broken to close to within 4-3.

 

Christiana Raymond put Miami up 2-0 with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2, then Heerden added another point with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6. Guerrazzi clinched the team's overall victory with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 performance. Mohan won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 before UC got on the board with a super-tiebreaker win at No. 3. Alix Thurman got behind early in losing the first set 6-4, but forced the extra session with a 6-2 win in the second. The tiebreaker went 10-6 to the Bearcats.

 

The final match also needed a a third set as Ramona Costea cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set before falling 7-6 (7-4) in the tiebreaker. This time, the best-of-10 game went to the RedHawks, 10-4.

 

Miami opens its home season with a busy slate next weekend at Hamilton's Riverside Athletic Club. The RedHawks host Eastern Kentucky Saturday at 3:30 before playing a 11 a.m. doubleheader Sunday against California (Pa.) and Xavier.

 

 

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the second straight match, the Miami tennis team failed to post a victory against tough competition, falling to Louisville 7-0 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. And just like last week, when the RedHawks fell to Indiana 7-0, the chance at a potential point ended with a super-tiebreaker loss in the last match to end.

 

Christine Guerrazzi, playing at the No. 4 slot, won her first set 7-5, but couldn't hold on, dropping the second set 6-4 and third set 1-0 (10-6)

 

The Cardinals, who won a match over Southern Illinois, earlier in the day, took all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Miami used new pairings from last week, but still fell 8-2 at No. 3 and 8-4 at No. 2. The closest match came in the top flight where Guerrazzi and Nimisha Mohan extended their opponents to 9-7. The RedHawk duo held a 5-4 lead early before the Cardinals broke and held for a 6-5 lead. After Miami tied the match at 7, Louisville was able to win the final two games to complete the doubles sweep.

 

In singles play, the Cardinals (4-0) dominated the first sets in five of the six matches. Louisville won the action at No. 3 by a 6-2, 6-2 count and at No. 2 by a score of 6-0, 6-3. The clinching point came at No. 6, which finished with a 6-2, 6-2 decision. In the No. 5 match, Ramona Costea fell 6-2 in the first set, and was down 2-5 in the second before rallying. She closed to within 5-4 before eventually succumbing 7-5 in the second set.

 

 

 

 

CHICAGO - Completing a perfect 3-0 weekend to open the spring season, Northern Illinois scored 7-0 wins over Valparaiso and Western Illinois on Saturday at Homewood-Flossmoor Tennis Club. The stellar weekend gives sixth-year Head Coach Ryun Ferrell his best-ever start to a season.

 

"We had a solid performance today and played even better than we did yesterday," Ferrell said. "We took care of business, which was really nice to see. We want to continue improving and get ready for Southern Illinois next weekend."

 

Against Valparaiso, the Huskies easily grabbed the doubles point with two shutouts. At No. 1, Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) defeated Valparaiso's Kristin Zakiewicz and Michelle Fredlake 8-0. Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) and Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) did the same to Valpo's Lauren Kammerer and Angelina Goheen at No. 3. In the No. 2 spot, Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College) and Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) grinded out an 8-6 win over Valpo's Megan Barthels and Kaitlyn Hamel.

 

In singles play, every Huskie won in straight sets. Youel scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Zakiewicz at the top. Dekkinga took down Hamel 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot. De La Torre grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Fredlake at No. 3. Malkin battled for a 6-1, 6-4 win over Barthels at No. 4. McDonald put together a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Kammerer. Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) rounded it out with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Valpo's Aubree Zdanovec. 

 

NIU was even better against Western Illinois as the Huskies won all three doubles matches without surrendering a point. The same doubles lineup produced three 8-0 wins to claim the doubles point.

 

In singles play, each Huskie scored straight set wins again and McDonald was the only one to not win by a 6-0, 6-0 tally. She earned a 6-0, 6-1 win to complete a very successful weekend for NIU.

 

Next up for the Huskies is a home match against Southern Illinois on Saturday, February 2 at 1 p.m. CT in Rockford at Boylan Tennis Center.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Northern Illinois started its 2013 campaign impressively with a 6-1 win over Bradley on Friday afternoon at Boylan Tennis Center. The win, fueled by a sweep in singles play, marks the first season opening triumph for sixth-year Head Coach Ryun Ferrell.

 

"In doubles we weren't flat, just too hyped," said Ferrell. "We didn't execute very well in doubles. Bradley played great doubles, and I have to give them credit. In singles we settled down and got to work. That's what we are good at. We made it physical and we like that. It was a good day in all, but we have a lot of work to do still. You don't play normally play your best tennis in the first match but we'll get back at it tomorrow and continue to improve."

 

The doubles tandem of Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) took the No. 1 match-up with an 8-4 win over BU's Adele Henke and Corey Mattson. However, NIU's No. 2 and No. 3 teams fell to give the Braves the doubles point. Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne's Diocesan College) and Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) lost 8-4 to Cassia Wojtalik and Sarah Rodefeld, while Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) were beat by Kennedy Scott and Carly Miles 8-5. 

 

The Huskies quickly regrouped to dominate singles play with six victories, five coming in straight sets. Youel took down Henke 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Dekkinga won 6-4, 6-0 over Mattson at No. 2. De La Torre topped Rodefeld 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot. Malkin earned a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Elizabeth Przystawski at No. 4. Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) defeated Scott 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot. McDonald needed just a little longer to beat Wojtalik 6-5, 6-2 (7).

 

The Huskies immediately return to action tomorrow in Valparaiso, Ind. to face Western Illinois at 1 p.m. CT and Valparaiso at 5 p.m. to wrap up the first weekend of spring competition.

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women's tennis team produced a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday night. The win is the second in as many days for the Rockets inside the Toledo Shadow Valley Tennis Club, improving their record to 2-1.

 

"We had another solid effort from our freshman today," UT Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. "It was also good to see the ladies get up early on their opponents and never look back in singles."

 

The Rockets picked up four victories at No. 3-6 singles, all in straight sets. Junior Chrissy Coffman defeated YSU's Annina Brendel at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0. Freshmen Mackenzie Bowman and Katelyn Nguyen claimed the No. 4 and 5 matches, respectively, while senior Silvia Carvajal won the final No. 6 match by scores of 6-1, 6-1 over YSU's Tioana Raicevic.

 

Sophomore Pia Rygh played her third match at the No. 1 singles spot and almost came away victorious, falling in three sets to Maria Burak - 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-4.

 

UT took two-of-three in doubles action to earn another point. The freshmen duo of Bowman and Emily Mazzola remained undefeated on the season by winning the No. 2 match, 8-4. Carvajal and Nguyen also paired up for an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

 

Toledo will host Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 1 and then travel to Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 2. Friday's match with the Vikings is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo (1-1) recorded its first win of the season over IPFW (0-1) on Friday afternoon, 4-3. The Rockets claimed three singles matches and took the deciding point in doubles action in their home opener at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

 

“This was a solid team effort against a tough IPFW team,” UT Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. “I’ve been impressed by the freshmen as they are making an impact early on for us.”

 

Freshmen Mackenzie Bowman and Katelyn Nguyen captured their first-collegiate victories over the 2010 and 2011 Summit League champions. Bowman defeated IPFW’s Theresa Neumeyr at No. 4 singles in straight sets, while Nguyen triumphed over Marcy Huck in a three-set battle at the No. 5 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

 

Junior Chrissy Coffman claimed her first win of the season, defeating Kristine Lindel by a scores of 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.

 

In doubles competition, freshman Emily Mazzola won for the second time this season. She paired up with Bowman for an 8-3 victory over the Mastodons.

 

Nguyen teamed up with senior Silvia Carvajal and won the No. 3 match to earn the all-important doubles point.

 

The Rockets are back in action tomorrow night against Youngstown State (0-0) at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The opening matches will begin at 5:30 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team saw their three-match win streak to start the season snapped on Sunday, as the Broncos fell 7-0 to the #50 Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington.  With the loss, the Broncos fall to 3-1 on the season.

 

The nationally-ranked Hoosiers overpowered the Broncos in the contest, taking the three doubles matches and holding the Broncos without a win in singles play.  Maggie Remynse had her five-match singles winning streak snapped in the No. 4 singles match, giving Carolyn Chupa a run for her money in the first set before falling 7-5, 6-1.

 

Indiana opened doubles play with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 match, as Remynse and Kelsey King fell to Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murday.  The doubles point was clinched when Jill Pastunink and Nini Sujashvili fell in the No. 1 match to Leslie Hureau and Sophie Garre, and Kathleen Hawkins and Caroline Aleck fell in the No. 2 match to wrap the session.

 

The Hoosiers started singles play with a win in the NO. 6 singles match, as Murdy defeated the Broncos' Hailey Shanahan to give her team a 2-0 edge.  Sujashvili battled Hureau in the No. 1 singles match but ultimately lost 6-1, 6-2, and Klyczek clinched the match with a win over Hawkins in the No. 2 singles match.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team continued its hot streak to start the 2013 dual match season, as the Broncos defeated the Butler Bulldogs 6-1 in Indianapolis on Saturday.  With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-0 on the season.

 

The Broncos swept the doubles session for the third straight match, and took five of the six singles matches played against the Bulldogs to set the final score.  In the process, four Broncos improved to 6-0 overall on the season, including Maggie Remynse, who has now won five straight singles matches dating back to last fall, as well as Kelsey King, Nini Sujashvili, and Jill Pastunink. Caroline Aleck added to her team-leading singles wins total, improving to 10-7 on the season.

 

Remynse and King earned their fifth straight win as a doubles pairing to open the contest, defeating the Bulldogs' Laura Shull and Sienna Reuter 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles match.  Aleck and Kathleen Hawkins were near-perfect in the No. 2 doubles match, beating Caroline Hedrick and Konstantina Adami 8-1, and Sujashvili and Pastunink improved to 3-0 in No. 1 doubles matches with an 8-3 win over Stephanie McLoughlin and Brittany Farmer.

 

Singles play proved to be somewhat tighter, but the Broncos still finished the session strong with wins in five of the six matches.  Pastunink had the longest match of the day, besting Farmer in a three-set dual by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 match.  Sujashvili won her third straight singles match, defeating Stephanie McLoughlin 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 match, and Remynse earned her fifth straight with a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Adami.  King defeated Shull 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match, and Aleck rounded out the results with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Reuter in the No. 6 singles match.
