Ball State Knocks Off No. 23 Ranked Toledo 34-27

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State University football team (7-3, 4-2 MAC) pulled off the 34-27 upset over No. 23/25 and Mid-American Conference leader Toledo (8-2, 5-1 MAC) Tuesday night at the Glass Bowl.  
 
Sophomore running back Jahwan Edwards ran for 15-yards with 1:43 left on the clock to secure the win over the MAC undefeated Toledo Rockets.   Edwards exceeded 100 yards for the fourth straight game while also accomplishing that feat five times this season.  Senior quarterback Keith Wenning has now thrown a total of three touchdowns five times this season along with 20 TD's in 2012 which is the third most in school history.
 
Defensively senior linebacker Travis Freeman and teammate sophomore defensive end Nick Miles led the team with 11 tackles.  Miles also had a sack and a tackle for loss.
 
The game would come down to the fourth quarter, as Toledo took its first lead of the game 27-24 at the 14:56 mark after Terrance Owens crossed the goal line for four yards.  It didn't take long for Ball State to tie the game back up for the second time at 27-27 in its next possession off of a 30-yard field goal from senior kick Steven Schott.
 
Wenning threaded the needle to Smith to open the second half for a three yard touchdown pass with 9:15 on the clock in the third quarter to put BSU on top 24-17.  Toledo would then nail a 22-yard field goal from kicker Jeremiah Detmer making it a 24-20 ball game.  
 
The two MAC West Division teams battled at the start of the game ending the half tied 17-17.  The Cardinals started off strong in the first quarter when Wenning in his first two possessions of the contest went 12-of-13 for pass completions with two touchdowns.  Junior wide receivers Jamill Smith and Connor Ryan both caught TD's for the Cardinals given Ball State the early 14-0 advantage over Toledo.  
 
The Rockets would finally get on the board at the 1:30 mark in the first period after quarterback Terrance Owens threw a 24-yard TD pass to Bernard Reedy.  Toledo continued to carry its momentum into the second half with when Detmer kicked a 29-yard field goal at the 12:33 mark to make the score 14-10.   
 
The Cardinals were held to only a field goal in the second quarter, which resulted in a Rocket miscue when senior defensive lineman Tony Martin recovered a fumble and ran it back for 47-yards.  Ball State managed 24-yard field goal from Schott in the ensuing possession to go up 17-10.  
 
Toledo ended the half with a Cassius McDowell 4-yard touchdown with 54 seconds on the clock tying the contest.
 
The Ball State football team will play Ohio University in its last home game of the season Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. which will be televised on ESPN2 or ESPNU.
