AKRON, Ohio - Following his late-game heroics in UA's come-from-behind victory against Hartwick Saturday, junior Anthony Ampaipitakwong was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week Monday.
Ampaipitakwong, a candidate for the prestigious Hermann Trophy, scored a pair of goals - including the game-winner - to complete a perfect regular season for the Zips, who improved to 18-0-0. After finding the net in the first half, the midfielder punched home the decisive blow in the 84th minute following a through ball by Teal Bunbury into the box and a back-heel redirection by Blair Gavin.
It was the second multiple-goal performance of Ampaipitakwong's career. Both have come in 2009 as the native of Carrollton, Texas, also scored twice in a victory at Western Michigan last month. For the season, Ampaipitakwong has recorded five goals and four assists while starting all 18 games for UA.
This is the second time Ampaipitakwong, an NSCAA All-American in 2008, has earned National Team of the Week honors from Top Drawer Soccer this season after first being recognized on Oct. 12.
As the No. 1 seed, Akron will play host to the Mid-American Conference Tournament this weekend. The Zips will face fourth-seeded Northern Illinois (10-7-1, 3-3-0 MAC) Friday in the second of two semifinal matches starting at 6 p.m. (EST). Hartwick (9-3-4, 3-1-2), the No. 2 seed, will face No. 3 Western Michigan (6-9-1, 3-2-1) in the first game starting at 3 p.m. (EST).
Tickets for the MAC Tournament are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and can be purchased by calling the Athletics Ticket Office at 1-888-99-AKRON. University students with valid ID's will be admitted free of charge.
