MAC Announces Baseball Players & Pitchers Of The Week

Central Michigan's Tyler Stovall and Miami's Chris Nadeau claimed Player of the Week honors, while Ohio's Chris Rigo and Central Michigan's Steve Teno garnered Pitcher of the Week honors.

MAC West Division Baseball Player Of The Week

Tyler Stovall, Central Michigan, OF, Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio (Moeller)

Stovall picked up two hits in each of CMU's first two games, including a two-run double against Southern Utah in the opener. He then smacked four hits, including a two-run triple, against UNLV in the series finale. For the week, Stovall hit .444 and collected eight hits. He knocked in five RBI’s and scored two runs.

 

MAC East Division Baseball Player Of The Week

Chris Nadeau, Miami, LF/DH, Jr., Saline, Mich. (Saline)

Nadeau had a stellar weekend at the plate in the DeMarini Invitational, hosted by Arizona State. Against three nationally-ranked teams, No. 1 Arizona State, No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 7 Oregon State, Nadeau hit .556 (5-of-9), including a double and scored three runs. After drawing two walks against the top-ranked Sun Devils, Nadeau went 2-for-4 against the back-to-back national champions, Oregon State, before delivering a 3-for-3 performance against last year’s SEC champs, Vanderbilt, which tied a career-high for most hits in a game. Nadeau was named to the DeMarini Invitational All-Tournament team for his outstanding play throughout the weekend.

 

MAC East Division Baseball Pitcher Of The Week

Chris Rigo, Ohio, Jr., Westlake, Ohio (St. Ignatius)

Rigo threw a no-hitter through the first six and 2/3 innings to lead the Bobcats a win against Charleston Southern in the first game of the season. Rigo worked 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit and one earned run, while striking out five to improve to 1-0 on the season.   

 

MAC West Division Baseball Pitcher Of The Week

Steve Teno, Central Michigan, Jr., LaSalle, Ont. (Olney Central CC)

Teno threw a complete-game win at UNLV on Saturday last week. In his Chippewa debut, he allowed nine hits and walked one while striking out four and allowing a pair of Rebel runs.

This Week's Honorable Mention Performances:

Jake Plata, Akron, OF, So., Parma, Ohio (Padua Franciscan)

Plata recorded at least one hit in all four games this weekend as the Zips earned a series split with West Virginia University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

 

Frank Turocy, Akron, P, Jr., Canfield, Ohio (Canfield)

Turocy struck out a career-high nine batters while scattering four hits in eight superb innings to lead the Zips to a season-opening victory over West Virginia last Friday.

 

Brad Piatt, Ball State, SP., Galveston, Ind. (Lewis Cass)

Piatt pitched six scoreless innings in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at UAB. He left the game with a 2-0 lead, and although he earned a no-decision, the Cardinals edged the Blazers 3-2 for their first win of the season.

 

Kolbrin Vitek, Ball State, DH, Fr., Bryan, Ohio (Bryan)

Vitek led the Cardinals offensively for the weekend with a .417 batting average. He logged two doubles and a triple in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader to go along with three RBI.

 

Frank Berry, Bowling Green, 1B/RP, So., Virginia Beach, Va. (Longwood)

Berry picked up the win in 3.1 innings of relief after going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Berry started the game at first base.

 

Jacob Rosenbeck, Buffalo, SS, Jr., Medina, N.Y. (Medina)

Rosenbeck went 7-for-14 with a double and an RBI in the season opening series against North Carolina A&T. Rosenbeck had three hits in two of the three games in the series.

 

Jeffrey Hains, Buffalo, P, So., Mexico, N.Y. (Mexico)

Hains allowed no hits in 3.2 innings of relief on Sunday against North Carolina A&T. It was the first appearance of the season for Hains.

 

Matt Erwood, Miami, P, Sr., Atlanta, Ga. (Marist)

Erwood delivered an outstanding performance in Miami’s 4-3 loss to No. 3 Vanderbilt on Sunday, Feb. 24. Erwood pitched six innings, which tied a career-best, and gave up just one earned run to the Commodores. Erwood struck out a career-high five batters, while giving up just one walk. For his performance, Erwood was named to the DeMarini Invitational All-Tournament Team.

 

Brandon Besl, Ohio, 3B, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio (Oak Hills)

Besl batted .538 on the week, going 7-for-13 at the plate to lead the Bobcats to a 2-1 series win against Charleston Southern this past weekend.
