Men's Track Athlete of the Week

Wayne Gordon, Kent State, Junior

Finish in Event: 1st 200m / 1st 60m
Finishing Time: 21.06 / 6.77

Even though the men’s team lost to Akron, 77.50-73.50, at the Akron Dual on Friday, Jan. 17 in the Kent State Field House, Wayne Gordon took first in two events where his times are tops in the MAC this season so far. Gordon took first in the dual in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.06, first in the MAC and 10th in the nation, and first in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.77, first in the MAC and 36th in the nation. Gordon’s 200 meter time puts him second best all-time in Kent State’s indoor record while his 60 meter time is fifth best all-time at Kent State.
 

Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Victoria Voronko, Eastern Michigan, Junior

Meet Name: Simmons Invitational
Finish in Event: 2nd
Finishing Time: 9:22.94 (9:27.76 on UofM track)

Eastern Michigan University junior track athlete Victoria Voronko claimed a runner-up finish at the Simmons Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 18. The Stavropol, Russia native ran the 3000m run in a time of 9:22.94 (time adjusted by Track and Field Results Reporting System to account for track size), finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Voronko was bested only by All-American and 2013 Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year, Erin Finn of the University of Michigan, who also holds the top time in the nation for the 2013-14 season. The time ranks first among Mid-American Conference athletes and ninth in the nation.

Shawn Barber, Akron, Sophomore

Event: Pole Vault
Finish in Event: 1st
Finishing Time: 18-02.50

Shawn Barber continued to establish himself among the nation's elite athletes with a jump of 18-02.50 in the men's pole vault at the Kent Dual last Friday night. The winning mark was nearly two feet better than any other competitor on the day as the Texas native improved on his season-opening vault of 18-01.75. Barber enters the week ranked No. 2 in the country and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference.

 

Women's Field Athlete of the Week

Dior Delophont, Kent State, Sophomore

Meet Name: Akron vs. Kent State Dual
Finish in Event: 1st in high jump / 1st in triple jump

Two-time All-American Dior Delophont continued her success in the high jump and triple jump, winning first with a 6-00.50 effort in the high jump and a 40-06.25 in the triple jump. She currently sits No. 1 in the MAC in the high jump and triple jump while her high jump height is third in Division I with her triple jump distance putting her 27th in the nation. Delophont’s 6’ 0.5” high jump mark puts her currently third best all-time in Kent State’s indoor record as the 40’ 6.25” triple jump is eighth best all-time. Kent State defeated Akron Friday, Jan. 17 83-68 in the Kent State Field House.

Finishing Time: 56.36, 3:49.42

Daziah Green earned her place among the program's top all-time sprinters while picking up a pair of event wins at the Kent Dual last Friday night. Green kick off her big night by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.36, which is the fourth-best mark recorded in the Mid-American Conference to date and ranks her fifth on the Zips' all-time performers list. The Canton, Ohio native then ran anchor on the winning 4x400 meter relay team that posted a collective time of 3:49.42.

Finish in Event: 1st in 60m hurdles / 6th in 200m dash / 1st in 4x400m relay
Finishing Time: 9.42 in 60m hurdles / 27.18 in 200m dash / 4:06.81 in 4x400m relay

Ball State freshman sprinter Olivia Ashba picked up her first career individual event victory by capturing the 60m hurdle title at the IWU Invitational with a time of 9.42 … She also ran the first leg for Ball State’s 4x400m relay which posted a first-place time of 4:06.81 … Ashba also competed in the 200m dash, placing sixth overall with a time of 27.18.

 

Jeanette Pettigrew, Bowling Green, Senior

Meet Name: Simmons-Harvey Invitational (University of Michigan)
Finish in Event: 2nd / 60; 3rd/ 1600 relay
Finishing Time: 7.63 seconds in 60; 3:54.21 in 1600 relay

Jeanette Pettigrew continued her strong season in the 60, finishing second in the event at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, with a time of 7.63 seconds. She placed second in the prelims with a time of 7.71 and then improved upon that time in the finals. Pettigrew also ran on the 1600 relay team that finished third in 3:54.21, more than five seconds faster than BGSU had run the event this year.

 

Crystal Graham, Buffalo, Senior
Rochester NY, Health & Human Service Major

Ran a MAC Auto Qualifying Mark of 24.65 in the 200m dash, ranking her 2nd in the MAC (as of 1/18/14) and then came back to anchor the 4 x 400m relay team to a MAC leading time of 3:44.97 at the Great Dane Classic.

The freshmen ran to a first place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:15.90, nearly four seconds faster than the second place finisher.

 

Ann Marie Duffus, Kent State, Junior

Finishing Time: 8.51 / 19’ 8.25”

Competing in the Akron Dual, Ann Marie took first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.51, which places her first in the MAC this season and tied for 38th in the nation. Duffus also competed in the long jump where she saw another first place finish with a distance of 19’ 8.25”, which is first in the MAC this season and 22nd in the nation. Kent State defeated Akron 83-68 Friday, Jan. 17 in the Kent State Field House.

 

A'Iesha Irvin-Muhammad, Northern Illinois, Freshman

Freshman A'Iesha Irvin-Muhammad made quite an impression Saturday at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill., with two MAC Indoor Championships automatic qualifying marks, an event title and a second-place finish. In the 60 meters, she ran 7.73 in the prelims, then bested that mark in the finals with a 7.64 clip to secure second place and a berth in that event to the conference meet. Irvin-Muhammad one-upped her 60 meters performance in the 200 meters, winning her first-career event title and clinching a MAC auto bid with a time of 25.10.

Finishing Time: 71-05.25

Brittany Funk recorded a monster mark in the women's weight throw at the Kent Dual last Friday night that nearly broke a five-year school record, originally set by the program's last individual national champion. Funk won the event by nearly seven feet with a mark of 71-05.25, which was just three-quarters shy of matching the milestone of 71-06.00 set by former national champion Stevi Large in 2009. With the winning throw, Funk enters the week ranked No. 2 in the country and No. 1 in the MAC.

Finish in Event: 1st in long jump / 2nd in 60m dash / 5th in 200m dash

Sophomore Christina Crawford posted a Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship automatic qualifying mark in the long jump with a career-best leap of 18’-11.75” (5.78m) to capture the event title at the IWU Invitational … The effort currently ranks as the fourth-best in the MAC … In addition, Crawford placed second in the 60m dash (8.00) and 5th in the 200m dash (27.18) at the meet.

 

Tiera Parker, Bowling Green, Sophomore

Meet Name: Simmons-Harvey Invitational (University of Michigan)
Finish in Event: 1st in Triple Jump (37-10)

Tiera Parker jumped 37-feet-10 to win the triple jump at Michigan’s Simmons-Harvey Invitational Saturday, the longest leap by a BGSU student-athlete since 2007. The jump was almost 10 inches further than her personal best and was enough to beat Notre Dame’s Kelly Burke by more than a foot to take first. Parker also set a personal best in the 60, qualifying for the finals and placing fourth in 7.83 seconds.

 

Kelly Truppo, Buffalo, Junior

Placed 2nd in a MAC Auto Qualifying Standard of 3.95m (12’11.5”) making a personal best mark in the pole vault at the Great Dane Classic. She helped lead her team to a 3rd place finish overall in the 18-team field.

 

Megan Heffner, Cenral Michigan, Senior

Meet Name: Jack Skoog Open
Finish in Event: First

Heffner placed first at the Jack Skoog Open in high jump after surpassing her previous career-best 5-7. The senior cleared 5-8 (1.72m), which in addition to a new personal best, qualified for the MAC Indoor Championships.

 

Kate Wolanin, Eastern Michigan, Senior

Meet Name: Simmons Invitational
Finish in Event: 4th

EMU senior Kate Wolanin claimed a fourth-place finish in the high jump, Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Simmons Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. The Oxford, Mich. native finished just behind competitors from Michigan and Notre dame, as she cleared a height of 1.65 meters/5-feet 5-inches.

 

Claudette Day, Northern Illinois, Freshman
Belleville, Ill. (Belleville West)

Freshman Claudette Day posted an impressive collegiate debut Saturday in Champaign, Ill., with a third-place finish in the long jump at the Illini Classic. Despite joining the team just days before the meet, Day leapt 18-03.25 (5.57m) to earn bronze in the event, besting Lincoln's (Mo.) Nickiesha Beaumont by a quarter-inch and Illinois' Samone Thompson by three inches. The Belleville, Ill., native also got within inches of the NIU record of 18-08.50 (5.70m).

Finish in Event: 1st
Finishing Time: 1:51.35

Jake Hiltner breezed to a win in the men's 800-meter run at the Kent Dual last Friday night with one of the top times recorded in the country to date. By crossing the line in 1:51.35, the senior posting the No. 1 mark in the Mid-American Conference and the 15th-fastest time in the country.

 

Miles Lewis, Buffalo, Senior

Hit a MAC Auto qualifying mark in the 60m dash as he finished in 6.80 seconds at the Great Dane Classic, and currently ranks #2 in the MAC (as of 1/18/14).

 

Renaldo Powell, Central Michigan, Senior

Meet Name: Jack Skoog Open
Finish in Event: First (both events, 60 meter dash, 60 meter hurdles)
Finishing Time: 6.99 (60 meters), 7.99 (60HH)

The senior bested his personal record in the in the 60-meter dash with a first place finish in a time of 6.99. Powell went on to qualify for the MAC Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles crossing the finish line first in 7.99.

Finish in Event: 1st
Finishing Time: 1:21.60

EMU sophomore Mason Waynes claimed a victory in the 600m run at the Harvey Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 18 at the University of Michigan. Waynes beat out competitors from Notre Dame and Michigan to cruise to a win with a personal-best mark of 1:21.60.

 

Jonathan Jones, Buffalo, Junior

Won the Shot Put at the Great Dane Classic in a new Meet Record, new MAC record, new UB School Record, and personal best mark 19.72m ( 64’8.5”). This mark leads the MAC by 5’, and currently ranks him #4 in the NCAA.

Meet Name: Jack Skoog Open
Finish in Event: First

The sophomore placed first at the Jack Skoog Open in shot put with a throw of 16.56m. His performance was enough to qualify him for the MAC Indoor Championships.

 

Donald Scott, Eastern Michigan, Senior

Meet Name: Harvey Invitational
Finish in Event: 1st (triple jump), 4th (long jump)

The Eastern Michigan University senior claimed a first-place finish in the triple jump at the Harvey Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 18, at the University of Michigan. The Apopka, Fla. native recorded a distance of 15.47 meters/50-feet 9.25-inches, which is the top mark in the Mid-American Conference for the 2013-14 season and is the ninth-best distance in the nation. His performance in the triple jump was over four feet farther than the next competitor. Scott also leapt for a distance of 6.70 meters/21-feet 11.75-inches in the long jump to be the top Eagle finisher at the meet.

Finish in Event: 1st in Shot Put / 4th in Weight Throw

Junior Michael King saw a first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 59’ 8.5” which is second in the MAC this season and 22nd in the nation. His distance in the shot put is fourth best all-time in Kent State’s indoor records. King took fourth in the weight throw, 55’ 10.5”, as that puts him 10th in the MAC this season as the Kent State men’s track and field team lost to Akron on Friday, Jan. 17 in the Kent State Field House 77.50-73.50.
