MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Joe Colon, Northern Iowa—Senior, Clear Lake, Iowa (Clear Lake High School)
Northern Iowa senior Joe Colon beat the top two nationally ranked wrestlers in back-to-back matches last Monday. Colon handed No. 2 Tony Ramos of Iowa his first pin of his college career to win the 133-pound weight class at the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. Colon struck early and got the fall in the first period in just 2 minutes, 37 seconds.
Earlier in the season, Colon knocked off then-ranked No. 2 Tyler Graff of Wisconsin in a 6-0 decision. He beat No. 8 Graff again at Midlands. Colon is a returning NCAA national qualifier. He has three falls, six tech falls and two major decisions this season.
Before the weekend’s wins, he was ranked seventh in the nation by InterMat. Now in his second year on the Panther team, he has a 43-5 career record at UNI. He is 1-0 in the MAC, and has yet to lose a dual as a Panther. His quickest pin this season came in 1 minute, 13 seconds.
Tyler Argue, Northern Illinois—Junior, Matteson, Ill. (Mt. Carmel High School)
Northern Illinois junior Tyler Argue turned in an impressive performance over the holiday by placing eighth at 141 pounds in the 51st annual Midlands Championships. After advancing by way of an injury default in his first match of the day, Argue advanced to the quarterfinals following a close 7-6 victory over Utah Valley's Avery Garner. The junior couldn't get to the semifinals, though, as 12th-seeded Pat Greco of Northwestern bested him in a 5-3 decision. In the consolation bracket, Argue clinched a spot on the podium with an 11-3 major decision against George Mason's Sahid Kargbo, but was bounced by ninth-seeded Ethan Raley of Indiana in an 8-1 loss. In the seventh-place match, he dropped a tight 8-6 decision against two-time Division II All-American Ryan Fillingame of Adams State.
