MAC Announces 2013 All-MAC Teams & Postseason Awards

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES 2013 POST SEASON AWARDS;

HUSKIE QB JORDAN LYNCH WINS THE VERN SMITH LEADERSHIP AWARD
 
Cleveland, Ohio – A total of 31 repeat selections from last year’s All-MAC team highlight this year’s postseason football awards in the Mid-American Conference.
 
Northern Illinois senior quarterback Jordan Lynch (Chicago, Ill.) was tabbed as the winner of the 32nd Vern Smith Leadership Award, as voted on by the conference head coaches.  The award is presented annually to the conference’s top football player in honor of Vern Smith, the former University of Toledo Athletic Director.  This marks the second consecutive year that Lynch has won the Vern Smith Leadership Award.
 
Lynch also won for the second consecutive year the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award.  Lynch led the Huskies to a perfect 8-0 conference record, 12-0 overall, and No. 14 ranking in the BCS Rankings, No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.  Lynch rushed for 1,755 yards and 20 touchdowns, threw for 2,457 yards and another 22 touchdowns for 4,212 yards of total offense (351.0 ypg).  Lynch improved his record as a starting quarterback to 24-2 and established the NCAA single-game rushing record for yards rushing by a quarterback with 321 yards (vs. Western Michigan, 11/26).  Lynch established the school’s career record for touchdowns responsible for with 95 career touchdowns.  Lynch has surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in career rushing yards to become just the fifth player in FBS history with 4,000 rushing and 5,000 passing yards.  Lynch has 4,178 career rushing and 5,774 career passing yards.

In other awards, Northern Illinois Head Coach Rod Carey was named as the MAC Head Coach of the Year, Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch was honored as the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.  Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Toledo kicker Jeremiah Detmer was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Year and Western Michigan freshman wide receiver Corey Davis was named MAC Freshman of the Year.
 
Carey, in his first year as head coach of Northern Illinois, orchestrated a perfect regular season for the Huskies with a 12-0 overall record, 8-0 in the Conference. This marked the first perfect regular season for the program as an FBS member.  Northern Illinois tied the school record with its 12 consecutive wins. Carey led the Huskies to their fourth consecutive MAC West Division title.
 
Lynch, a second year starter at quarterback for the Huskies, ranks second in the nation in points responsible for (258), ranks third in the country in rushing yards (1,755 yards) and fourth in the nation in total offense (4,212 total yards for 351.0 ypg). Lynch led a Huskies team that has won 26 consecutive home games, the longest in the nation, 25 consecutive conference games, also the longest in the nation, and have won 24 of its last 25 overall games.
 
Mack, a native of Fort Pierce, Fla., was part of a Buffalo team that finished 8-4 overall, 6-2 in Conference play.  Mack set the NCAA record for 16 career forced fumbles during his collegiate career. The senior is a three-time All-MAC first-team selection and leads the Bulls with 94 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.  Mack also established a tie for the NCAA record for career tackles for loss with 75 for his career.
 
Detmer, a native of Hillard, Ohio, led the MAC in field goals and field goal percentage by making 19 of 20 field goals this season for a 95.0 percentage.  Detmer had 101 total points on the year, including 44 of 45 converted PATs.  Detmer has converted 13 consecutive field goals and over the past two seasons has been successful on 36 of his last 37 field goal attempts.
 
Davis, a native of Wheaton, Ill., as a true freshman started in 11 games and led all freshman receivers in receptions (67), receiving yards (941), touchdowns (6), receiving yards per game (85.5 avg.) and 100-yard receiving games (5).  Davis set the school freshman record for receiving yards and 100-yard games, and tied the freshman mark in receptions with last year’s winner and teammate Jaime Wilson
 
Northern Illinois led the way in 2013 with six first team selections, followed by Buffalo with five and Ball State and Toledo each with four.  Overall, Ball State set the pace with 15 honorees, followed by Toledo with 11 honorees, while Bowling Green and Northern Illinois each had ten honorees.
 
Kent State defensive tackle Roosevelt Nix became one of only five players in MAC history to be named a four-time All-MAC first team selection.  Nix (2010-13) joins defensive back Davonte Shannon, Buffalo (2007-10), defensive back Barry Church, Toledo (2006-09), punter Dave Zastudil, Ohio (1998-2001) and quarterback Brian McClure, Bowling Green (1982-85) on this prestigious list.
 
Buffalo senior linebacker Khalil Mack and Miami senior defensive back Dayonne Nunley were both selected to their third consecutive first team All-MAC selection.
 
There were a total of seven student-athletes named to their second consecutive first team selection:  quarterback Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois), tight end Zane Fakes (Ball State), wide receiver Willie Snead (Ball State), running back Branden Oliver (Buffalo), running back David Fluellen (Toledo), defensive back Jimmie Ward (Northern Illinois) and defensive back BooBoo Gates (Bowling Green).
