Dayton, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team concluded the 2013 season with a non-conference match at Dayton Friday evening. Three of the four sets were decided by three points or fewer but the Flyers came away with the 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20 victory.
Senior Lindsey Butterfield finished her career with a team-high 17 kills and senior Ashley Dunn led the way with 28 digs. Bowling Green held an 87-82 edge in digs for the contest. Senior Paige Penrod added 13 kills and freshman Jelena Sunjic had 11.
The first set was tied at 20-20 before Dayton closed with a 5-2 run to take the early lead. The Falcons struck back in a nip-and-tuck second. Trailing 24-23, junior Erica Fullenkamp tied the score with a kill and seniors Kaitlyn Skinner and Penrod added back-to-back points for the 26-24 victory.
In the third set, Dayton jumped out to a 6-0 lead but Bowling Green stormed back late and Sunjic had back-to-back kills to get the Falcons within one at 24-23. But the Flyers closed out the set with a kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth, the Falcons fell behind early and were never able to mount a comeback.
With the win, Dayton finishes its season at 16-13 overall and Bowling Green ends at 14-16. The Falcons graduate seven seniors from a team that went 10-6 in Mid-American Conference play and finished second in the East Division.
