Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: September 23-30

Reinaldo Brenes recorded his fourth game-winning goal of the season in leading the 10th-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team to a 1-0 Mid-American Conference victory at West Virginia Sunday night. After a shot from teammate Eric Stevenson was saved by the Mountaineers' goalkeeper, Brenes jumped on the rebound and buried it from 12 yards out in the game's fifth minute of play. It was Akron's fastest goal of the year and lifted the team to its fourth consecutive victory in a key league match. Brenes, who is a candidate for the Hermann Trophy as well as the Senior CLASS Award this season, carries a 3.75 cumulative GPA as an international business major at UA.  
 
 
Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: September 23-30
 
Kent State Jessacca Gironda (Soccer)
Jessacca Gironda  (Forward, Senior, 3.88, Business Management)
Jessacca Gironda etched her name in the Kent State record book on Sunday as she contributed of all five of the team’s goals in a 5-0 victory over Bowling Green. The senior forward totaled a school-record 8 points as she recorded just the fifth hattrick in program history and added a pair of assists to lead the Golden Flashes to their first MAC victory of the season. In conference contests, Gironda leads the MAC in both goals and points and is tied for third in assists. Her team-leading 6 goals overall is tied for second in the conference and her 15 points rank third. With Sunday’s historic performance, Gironda has moved into third on Kent State’s all-time goals (23) and points (60) lists.
