Men's Golfer of the Week

Taylor Pendrith, Kent State, Senior

Tournament Name: Jack Nicklaus Invitational

Finish in Event: Second

Scores: 208 (67-73-68)

Taylor almost didn't make the trip to Columbus for the Jack Nicklaus Invitational due to an elbow injury. As late as Wednesday, he was a likely scratch from the lineup.  Taylor ended up finishing alone in second place at 5-under-par (67-73-68–208) behind Brandon Hagy of No. 1 ranked California. His move into second included back-to-back-to-back birdies at holes 12-to-14 during a 3-under-par back nine on the The Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course. 

 

Women's Golfer of the Week

Jennifer Ha, Kent State, Junior

Tournament Name: Nittany Lion Invitational

Finish in Event: First

Scores: 212 (70-72-70)

Ha had her second win in as many events on Sunday, capping off the Nittany Lion Invitational with a 212 (-4) to walk away with a four-stroke lead for the win, helping Kent State to their second win of the fall season, as well.  She eagled hole 18 in the opening round to sit one back of the leader after the opening round, then came on strong to take the lead after day two.  Besides the eagle, Ha totaled ten birdies through three rounds.  Her score of 212 sits in a tie for 7th all-time in the Kent State record books for a 54-hole tournament.

 

Other Nominees

Casey LaBarbera, Northern Illinois, Junior

Tournament Name: UMKC Kangaroo Invitational

Finish in Event: 13th

Scores: 232 (76-74-82)

Casey LaBarbera led the way for the Huskies at the UMKC Kangaroo Invitational firing a 232, a career low for a three-round event for the junior from Marinette, Wis. LaBarbera shot a career low 76 in the first round and topped that in the second round of play with a 74. She was part of a NIU team that posted three of its lowest scores of the season at the event and the fifth best team score in a 54-hole event as the Huskies finished with a 932.

 

Kristen Helmsdoerfer, Ohio, Senior

Tournament Name: Nittany Lion Invitational

Finish in Event: T-31st

Scores: 230 (76-77-77)

Kristen showed excellent consistency to lead the Bobcats to their best finish in the Nittany Lion Invitational since 2007. Her 230 score marks her three-round best in four years at Ohio University. 

 

Lina Bengtsson, Akron, Freshman

Tournament Name: Nittany Lion Invitational

Finish in Event: T-11th

Scores: 224 (77-73-74)

Lina Bengtsson earned her first collegiate top-25 finish at the 37th Nittany Lion Invitational over the weekend, posting a three-day score of 224 (+8). After a round of 5-over 77 on Friday, she recorded her lowest collegiate round to date, a 1-over 73 to move her into contention for a top-10 finish. She closed out play with a 2-over 74, missing a top-10 finish by two strokes.

 

Corey Crossan, Eastern Michigan, Senior

Tournament Name: Nittany Lion Invitational

Finish in Event: T-25

Scores: 228 (79-71-78)

Senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) was the top EMU golfer with a 228 (79-71-78), finishing in tie for 25th place at the 2013 Nittany Lion Invitational, Sept. 27-29. One day after carding a career-low round of 71, Crossan managed to notch her seventh career top 25 showing. 

 

Tyler Merkel, ball State, Senior

Tournament Name: Golfweek Conference Challenge

Finish in Event: T-16th

Scores: 219 (70-73-76)

Tyler Merkel led Ball State with a tie for 16th place among a loaded field at Ohio State’s Jack Nicklaus Invitational. The tournament included four of the nation’s top 25 teams, and all 12 teams in the field were ranked among the top 120. Merkel fired a 54-hole total of 6-over par 219 on the way to his third top-20 finish in four events this fall.
