TOLEDO, OH – West Virginia’s physicality was a little too much for Toledo to match up against on Sunday afternoon as the Rockets suffered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) setback to the Mountaineers in the final match of this weekend’s Blue/Gold Invitational.
A balanced effort from both an offensive and defensive point of view proved to be the difference for UT as four Rockets tallied double-digit kill and dig totals.
The visitors registered an impressive .330 attack percentage and limited UT to a .142 mark thanks to 12.5 blocks and 50 digs.
Senior OH Lauren Rafdal was the only Rocket to reach double digits in kills with 14 terminations to go along with a .300 hitting mark. Freshman libero Ellen Hays paced the Rockets’ defensive efforts with 13 digs, while senior S Adria Pryor collected a team-best three blocks.
Senior OH Elzbieta Klein and freshman OH Jordan Anderson topped WMU’s attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Sophomore S Brittany Sample earned Tournament MVP honors and collected 41 assists and eight digs. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Anderson and sophomore MB Caleah Wells.
Rafdal and senior MB Dakota Harkins were UT’s representatives on the all-tournament team with Loyola OH Morgan Reardon, Eastern Illinois MH Stephanie Arnold and Marist libero Brooke Zywick also honored.
Toledo returns to action next weekend when it travels to Youngstown, OH for the YSU Invitational. The Rockets will face Tulane at 1:00 p.m. and St. Francis (PA) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 before meeting the host Penguins on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
