Mitchell Named Director Of Cross Country And Track; New Roles Assigned

BUFFALO, NY – Vicki Mitchell, the head cross country and track coach for the past 14 years, has been named Director of the cross country and track and field programs at the University at Buffalo, as announced on Friday.

 

Mitchell, who led the women's outdoor track and field team to a 3rd place finish at the Outdoor MAC Championships, their highest finish in school history, will manage the programs budgets, meet schedules, home event management along with serve as the academic liaison for all the student-athletes.

 

Along with the added roles, Mitchell will continue to directly coach the women's middle distance and distance events. The women's distance squad excelled during the 2013 season as they set several new record marks. During the indoor season, sophomore Meghan Manley set the school record in the 800m (2:06.91) placing 2nd at the MAC Championships.

 

Once outdoors, school records were set in the 3000m Steeple Chase (10:35.99) and the 5000m (16:50.56) by Katie Sanders. Kara Patrick crushed the school record in the 10,000m (35:04.57). Meghan Manley won the MAC Championships in the 800m and advanced to the NCAA Preliminary round.

 

Other new roles were also assigned to the very loyal coaching staff working under Mitchell's tutelage.

 

Perry Jenkins, who enters his 15th season with the Bulls, has been given the title of Head Coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays for the upcoming season. Under his watchful eye during the 2012-13 season, five new school records were set, a conference champion was crowned, and four athletes advanced to the Preliminary Round of NCAA Championships.

 

Entering his fifth season coaching the Bulls, Todd Witzleben has been appointed Associate Head Coach for men's cross country and distance runners. Witzleben will also take on the role of recruiting coordinator for track events and foreign student-athletes.

 

Steve Esler enters his 15th season as a UB Bull, his 10th as a coach and five seasons as a student-athlete. Esler was appointed Associate Head Coach for field events as a part of the reshuffling of roles in the cross country and track programs. Esler will directly Coach men and women horizontal jumps, high jump, javelin, and combined events and under his new role, he will also serve as Recruiting Coordinator for Field Events.

 

The 2013 USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, Jim Garnham Sr. enters his 13th season with the Bulls as Assistant Coach for throws. Arguably the best throws coach in the Mid-American Conference, Garnham coached two All-Americans in Jonathan Jones and Shante' White last season. Jones earned First Team All American Honors with his 4th place finish at the Outdoor NCAA Championships – the highest finish by a UB Male athlete at the NCAA Championships in school history. Shante' White set the indoor 25-pound Weight Throw school record and earned the MAC Title, while earning 2nd Team All American Honors.

 

Tiffany Regdos is now in her fourth season as Assistant Coach for pole vault. Under her guidance during the 2012-13 season, sophomore Craig Howard broke both the indoor (16'0.75) and outdoor (16'0.75) school records, while the women's pole vaulting squad saw the most successful year ever with three athletes qualifying for both the indoor and outdoor MAC Championships and Kelly Truppo qualifying for the NCAA Preliminary Round.

 

The 2013 cross country season starts up on September 7 as the Bulls travel to Hamilton, NY to take part in the Harry Lang Invite.
