Bowling Green 2, Ohio 0
AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Ohio University Wednesday afternoon, dropping the Bobcats by a score of 2-0 to advance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The win improves Bowling Green's overall record to 27-22, and pushes the Falcons into the second round where they will play the Central Michigan Chippewas.
Senior Adrienne Dick collected one of the Falcons’ four hits in the contest, going 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI. Freshman Braiden Dillow also had a solid day, going 1-for-1 in a pinch hitting situation. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (11-14) picked up the win, holding the Bobcats to just one hit in the first four innings of play. Fellow sophomore Paris Imholz recorded her fourth save of the season after allowing just one hit and striking out six Ohio batters in the final 3.0 innings.
Solid pitching on both sides took a scoreless game into the fifth before Bowling Green ended the scoring drought. The Falcons manufactured two tough runs on three hits in the top of the frame, giving the Orange and Brown the 2-0 lead.
Freshman Marisa Shook started the inning with a single into left field, eventually moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Chloe Giordano. Dick then came to the plate and fired a shot down the left field line, bringing home Shook from second for the first run of the ball game. A single from Dillow and a walk to senior Hannah Fulk loaded the bases, giving senior Paige Berger the chance to break the game open. Berger would earn a bases loaded walk on the play, bringing home a much needed insurance run.
Imholz took care of the rest for the Falcons, as she shut down the Bobcat bats to secure the opening game victory for Bowling Green. The Falcons’ next game is set for Wednesday night against the Chippewas of Central Michigan, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Bowling Green was 0-2 against Central Michigan this season, falling to the Chippewas, 4-2 and 5-0, earlier in the year on the road.
