Friday's WNIT Results
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Ball State women’s basketball team (16-15) advanced to the second round of the WNIT after pulling off the 54-51 upset over Big Ten foe Minnesota (18-14) Friday night in Williams Arena. Ball State has now won both of its meetings all-time against the Golden Gophers.
Ball State held one of the top offensive teams in the Big Ten to only 29.5 percent shooting from the field while the Cardinals shot 37.0 percent. The Cardinals held the Big Ten’s leading scorer Rachel Banham to only 12 points after she had been averaging 21.0 ppg this season. This is the first time the Cardinals have advanced to the second round of the WNIT since 2003 when Ball State defeated Indiana State, 91-87.
For the game junior guard Brandy Woody led all scorers with 19 points while teammate sophomore guard Brittany Carter ended the nigh with 11.
The Cardinals continued to control the remainder of the game despite Minnesota’s efforts. Ball State’s largest lead came at the 6:11 mark after senior guard Shanee’ Jackson knocked down a three pointer off of the assist from Carter which made it a 16-point (51-35) ball game.
After that, Minnesota went on a 14-0 run to come within two (51-49) with only 1:13 remaining in the game. Murphy hit a jumper to put Ball State back up by four (53-49) but Banham answered with a quick basket with 45 seconds left. The Golden Gophers were then forced to foul with four seconds on the clock, Woody would knock down a free throw to seal the Ball State victory.
Ball State got off to a quick 8-0 start over Minnesota at the start of the first half. The Cardinals led the entire first half eventually taking a 27-17 halftime advantage over the Golden Gophers.
