MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's tennis team rolled to a pair of sweeps Friday, taking down Aquinas College and Oakland both by scores of 7-0.  The Cardinals improved to 9-7 on the season with the two wins at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.

Ball State opened the day with a dominating performance over Aquinas College, dropping just three total games on the doubles courts and only seven combined games in the singles contests.  Courtney Wild at No. 1 singles and Courtney Earnest at the No. 2 position did not lose a single game between the two of them against their Aquinas opponents.

The Cardinals also picked up straight-set singles wins from Bethany Moore at No. 3, Paola Rodriguez at No. 4 and Lauren Pickrel at No. 5. Ball State claimed the final singles point by default.

The nightcap against Oakland also featured all straight-set victories for Ball State in singles action. Moore, Rodriguez and Kristel Sanders added wins to close out the sweep.

For the entire day, Ball State did not drop a set on any court. The Cardinals won seven singles sets by 6-0 scores over the two matches and faced only five sets all day closer than 6-2. Bowling Green:

Falcons Top UIC, 5-2, on Record-Tying Day
Eccleston ties doubles wins record as BGSU ties school-record win streak

The Bowling Green State University tennis team tied several school records on Sunday (March 17), as the Falcons downed UIC by a 5-2 score.  The non-conference dual match was held at Match Point Tennis.  With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-1 on the season, and BGSU has won 11 consecutive matches since a road loss against No. 19 Notre Dame on Jan. 18.  The 11-match winning streak ties the school record for consecutive victories.

Additionally, senior co-captain Maddy Eccleston tied the BGSU career record for doubles wins on Sunday afternoon.  Eccleston teamed up with fellow senior Katie Grubb for an 8-4 win at the second flight, in the process winning the 89th doubles match of her BG tenure.  She has tied the school record set by Christine Chiricosta (2008-11).

"Everyone contributed to this win today," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean.  "Just like in a lot of our other matches this season, winning the doubles point helped propel us to victory.  We had high energy heading into singles play, and got another solid performance today."

UIC drops to 7-3 on the year with Sunday's loss.  The Flames' other dual-match losses have come against Marquette and Wisconsin.

That win by Eccleston and Grubb helped the Falcons capture the doubles point for the 11th consecutive match. The BG duo defeated UIC's Kathryn Sharples and Jana Knoppe to improve to 15-5 this season and 7-1 at flight number two since the start of dual-match play.

At the top flight, BGSU's two juniors came away with a narrow victory, as Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland pulled out a 9-7 win over Haley Craig and Mariana Palacios.  The Chiricosta/Reuland tandem is 8-2 in dual-match play, 20-6 this season to date and 36-14 in their Falcon careers.

At the third flight, the Flames' Natalia Kuvakina and Ann-Sophie Hahn defeated BG seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson by an 8-2 final.

In singles play, four Falcons captured straight-sets wins, with a senior, two juniors and a freshman posting those victories.  At the top-two flights, the juniors were never headed, losing a total of eight games while winning 24.  Reuland downed Craig by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 at the number-one flight, while Chiricosta dropped only three games -- all in the second set -- in a second-flight win over Palacios.

Chiricosta has captured 11 consecutive singles matches having last lost in the Notre Dame dual of Jan. 18.  She has won 20 of her last 21 overall matches (singles and doubles combined) since a doubles loss on Jan. 19.

Freshman Katie Brozovich and Hill won at the fourth and fifth flights, respectively, capturing a narrow second set to clinch the win in each case.  Brozovich lost just one game in her first set against Sharples, while Hill dropped just two games in her opening set vs. Keti Mebuke.

The Flames got victories at the third flight, where Kuvakina squeaked past Eccleston in a third-set super tiebreaker, and the sixth flight, with Knoppe downing Grubb.  For Grubb the loss was just her second since the start of the dual-match season.

Chiricosta's two wins on Sunday give her a 44-12 overall record this season. Reuland also has topped the 40-win mark for the year, and is now 41-15.  Brozovich and Grubb each have 34 wins on the year, while Eccleston has 30 victories this season to date.

The Falcons now return home to prepare for the Mid-American Conference opener.  BGSU will face the arch-rival University of Toledo on Friday (March 22), with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.  In the event of inclement weather, the match would be held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

BGSU Bests Butler, 5-2, to Run Winning Streak to 10
Falcons sweep doubles point, then capture four singles matches

The Bowling Green State University tennis team won for the 10th consecutive outing, downing Butler University by a 5-2 final on Saturday afternoon (March 16) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-1 on the season, and BGSU has now posted a double-digit winning streak since a road loss against No. 19 Notre Dame on Jan. 18.  BG is a perfect 8-0 at home, and Saturday's win wrapped up a 7-0 homestand at the PTC.

BG captured the doubles point for the 10th match in a row, sweeping all three contests for the sixth time in that 10-match span.  At the third flight, seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson lost just one game in a win over Butler's duo of Sienna Reuter and Laura Shull.

Falcon juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland defeated Caroline Hedrick and Brittany Farmer, 8-2, in top-flight action. The second flight saw seniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb come away with an 8-5 win over the Bulldogs' Konstantina Adami and Stephanie McLoughlin.

For Eccleston, the win was the 88th doubles victory of her BGSU career.  She is just one doubles win shy of tying the school record of 89, held by Christine Chiricosta (2008-11).

In a doubles match that did not count in the final scoring, Falcon freshmen Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis posted an 8-0 whitewashing of Clare Cornelius and Kristen Haeberlein.

In singles play, the Falcons won three matches in straight sets, with Brozovich, Eccleston and Grubb picking up those wins.  BGSU was dominant at the bottom two flights, losing only one total game.

Grubb did not lose a single game in her sixth-flight win over Reuter, for her third consecutive singles win.  Grubb has won 12 of her last 13 singles matches.

At the fifth flight, Brozovich lost only one total game in a victory over Shull.  Brozovich has won 10 singles matches in a row since her last loss on Jan. 18.  The freshman has won 16-straight matches (singles and doubles combined) since that setback.

Eccleston swept Farmer at the third flight, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.  The senior co-captain now has a career total of 156 combined wins, ranking second in BGSU history.

The other three matches saw the competitors split their first two sets. Chiricosta won her opening set against McLoughlin at the second flight, then saw the BU junior capture the second set, 7-6. But, Chiricosta rolled to victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker, winning by a 10-3 final.

Chiricosta has captured 10 consecutive singles matches having last lost in the Notre Dame dual of Jan. 18.  She has captured 18 of her last 19 overall matches (singles and doubles combined) since a doubles loss on Jan. 19.

BU's lone two points came in third-set 'breakers, as Hedrick outlasted Reuland at the top flight and Adami defeated Hill at the fourth level.

The Falcons now head westward for a Sunday (March 17) match vs. UIC. The Flames (7-2) saw a seven-match streak come to an end with a loss at Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. Sunday's BGSU-UIC match will begin at 10:00 a.m. CT (11:00 a.m. ET) at Match Point Tennis in Griffith, Ind.

Bulls Remain Unbeaten With 4-3 Road Win At Louisiana Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, LA – Playing outdoors and away from the friendly confines of the Miller Tennis Center for the first time this Spring, the University at Buffalo women's tennis team ran its unbeaten streak to eight with a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Louisiana Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ragin' Cajuns took the doubles point, sweeping through the three matches and actually handing UB's number one team its first loss in dual competition.  However, the Bulls came back to win four of the six singles matches to keep the streak alive.

Junior Tanvi Shah won easily at first singles as she lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory, which tied the match up quickly.  After Louisiana won at fourth singles, Buffalo tied it up again as freshman Gopika Kapoor won at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-2.  Junior Miranda Podlas followed that up with a straight sets win at second singles, coming back in both sets to win 6-4, 7-5 and give UB the 3-2 lead.  The Ragin' Cajuns tied it back up with a three-set win at fifth singles, but the Bulls leaned on senior Tamara Markovic, who clinched the victory with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win.

"This was a fantastic victory for us," said head coach Kristen Ortman.  "Once we got over being outdoors for the first time we fought so hard.  It was tough early on for us to adjust to the elements of playing outdoors, but to our team's credit, they just kept on fighting."

The Bulls have one more match on their Spring Break trip, which will be Thursday at New Orleans.

Northern Illinois:

Huskies Reach Uncharted Territory with 14th Win
NIU Defeats Emporia State, 7-0, to Complete Non-Conference Schedule

EMPORIA, Kan. - With its 14th dual-match win of the season - a 7-0 victory over Emporia State in Emporia, Kan. Wednesday - the 2013 Northern Illinois women's tennis team has reached uncharted territory.

In raising its record to 14-2 on the season, NIU has now won more dual matches than any Huskie team in the last 15 years, since the 1997 Huskies posted a 15-9 mark.

The milestone surprised NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell.

"I had no idea, but I'm tickled as punch for the team," Ferrell said. "This group deserves it, they've worked hard, stayed focused and they hate losing more than they like winning, which is tremendous. They've been challenged and they've met it head on. All the credit goes to the team and we just want to keep it going as we head into conference play."

In its first outdoor match of the spring, NIU was not affected by the elements as the Huskies swept the Hornets in both singles and doubles. No. 1 player Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) kept her unblemished record intact with her 16th straight singles win, and her teammates at the No. 2 through 6 singles spots likewise notched straight set victories.

Northern Illinois also won all three doubles matches, with 8-4 wins at both No. 1 and No. 3 and an 8-2 win from Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald at No. 2 doubles.

"For our first match outside, we looked all right," Ferrell said. "ESU is well-coached and came out of the gates fast. We played tough and did what we do. It was nice to see and a good match to get ready for conference."

NIU closed out non-conference play and will now play eight straight matches against Mid-American Conference opponents to close out the regular season, beginning Friday, March 22 at Akron.

Three-Set Wins Spur Huskies to Victory Over UMKC
Northern Illinois Improves to 13-2 with 6-1 Win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - NIU's Cristina Alvarez and Haley Dekkinga earned three-set victories at No. 5 and No. 2 singles, respectively, leading the Northern Illinois women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Missouri-Kansas City Tuesday afternoon in Kansas City.

Northern Illinois won its 13th match of the 2013 spring season, tying the most wins in a season by a Huskie women's tennis team since 2003, and upped its record to 13-2 this spring. NIU is 11-0 in matches away from home this spring. UMKC fell to 3-10 with the loss.

After Northern Illinois claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots by the duos of Nelle Youel-Arantza De La Torre, and Dekkinga-Stephanie McDonald, respectively, Kansas City tied the match with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles by Dimitra Stavrianakou. NIU's Mary Malkin won her 13th match of the season, 6-2, 6-4, over UMKC's Suzan Lisenby at No. 4 singles, and Youel extended her undefeated streak to 15 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1.

When Dekkinga, Alvarez and McDonald were forced to a third set by their Kangaroos' opponents, the match hung in the balance. However, Alvarez took the third set of her match, 6-4, and Dekkinga won 6-2 in the third set, to clinch Northern Illinois' victory. McDonald closed out her match for the 6-1 final margin.

"This was an amazing day," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "Just when we thought we had UMKC down, they came right back. We did battle well right from the start and we finished. It was nice to see."

Northern Illinois looks to continue its winning ways Wednesday when the Huskies take on Emporia State in Emporia, Kan., in their first match of the spring to be played outside.

The Broncos put forth a solid effort in singles play, falling just short of taking two points from the Cougars during the singles session.  Nini Sujashvili saw her singles win streak snapped with a three-set loss at No. 1 singles; Sujashvili came back from being a set down to Elena Kordolaimi to take an exciting second-set tiebreaker, but ultimately dropped the match 6-1, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (6).

Jill Pastunink also made a good run at taking a singles victory against the Cougars, but reversed Sujashvili's script in that she took the first set before dropping the second.  Pastunink defeated Rocio Martin Fernandez 7-5 in the first set, but ultimately lost 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (9).  Pastunink and Sujashvili were the last matches on the court for the Broncos, as the two continued to battle throughout the match.

Houston clinched the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches, and quickly took a 2-0 lead with a win at the No. 2 singles match by Celia Fraser over Maggie Remynse.  Dionne Sanders defeated Hailey Shanahan in the No. 6 singles match, and Charlotte Phillips clinched the win with a victory in the No. 4 singles.
