2012-13 Women's Basketball All-MAC Teams Announced

Updated 3/7/2013

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced its first batch of women’s basketball awards Friday, a day after the announcement of the final players of the week for the 2012-13 season.  A total of 25 individuals were honored as the MAC revealed the 2012-13 All-MAC First Team, Second Team, Third Team, Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team.  The student athletes have been recognized by the head coaches from across the league for their terrific seasons.

Following one of the most successful regular seasons in MAC history, the 27-2 Toledo Rockets placed two on the All-MAC First Team.  Senior guard, Naama Shafir, has been named to the First Team for the second time in her Rocket career.  Shafir led the Rockets in scoring during her comeback season after missing the 2011-12 campaign with a knee injury.  Joining Shafir from the number-one seed in the 2013 MAC Tournament is junior defensive specialist Andola Dortch.  The 2012 MAC Defensive Player of the Year earned her first spot on the prestigious First Team following a season where Dortch led the league in steals with 77.  Akron’s Rachel Tecca earned her first All-MAC honors this season as she led the Akron Zips to their first MAC East Division Title in school history.  Tecca was the top scorer in the MAC during the 2012-13 season, averaging 19.4 on the season and in conference-play.  Central Michigan’s Crystal Bradford, the lone sophomore on the First Team, carried momentum from her 2012 MAC Tournament, where she earned All-Tournament honors as a freshman, into the 2012-13 as she made the jump from honorable mention as a freshman to First Team in her sophomore season.   Bradford earned a MAC leading five MAC West Player of the Week nods, including three in-a-row to open the conference season.  Finally, Miami’s Courtney Osborn rounds out the First Team.  Osborn finds herself on the first team for the second time as well, after being a member of the 2011-12 team a year ago.  Osborn joins the First Team as the RedHawks all-time leading scorer and only 2,000 point scorer in program history.  Both accomplishments reached during the 2012-13 season.

The All-MAC Second Team saw a pair of Falcons receive honors under first-year head coach Jennifer Roos.  Alexis Rogers and Chrissy Steffen find themselves earning All-MAC honors for the second team each, with Rogers being named to the First Team in 2012, and Steffen repeating as a second teamer from a year ago.  A pair of seniors frontcourt seniors join the BGSU pair as Miami’s Kirsten Olowinski and Toledo’s Yolanda Richardson also have been honored.  Olowinski led the MAC in rebounding this season averaging 10.5 boards per contest, while Richardson was one of the top post threats after leading the MAC in shooting percentage at .593.  Ball State freshman, Nathalie Fontaine is the fifth and final member of the Second Team in 2013.  Fontaine had a fantastic freshman season under first-year head coach Brady Sallee.  Fontaine finished the regular season as the Cardinals’ leading scorer (13.3 ppg) and rebounder (6.4 rpg).

The All-MAC Third Team consists of Zips Sina King and Hanna Luburgh, Ball State’s Brandy Woody, Central Michigan’s Jessica Green and Toledo’s Inma Zanoguera.

Buffalo’s Christa Baccas and Mackenzie Loesing, along with Central Michigan’s Brandie Baker and Jessica Schroll and Western Michigan’s Marquisha Harris received Honorable Mention recognition.

The Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team rounds out the team honors for the 2012-13 season.  Ball State’s Nathalie Fontaine collected her second All-MAC honors of the season in addition to her Second Team honors.  Buffalo’s Mackenzie Loesing was the Bulls second leading scoring during the season averaging 13.8 points per game during conference play.  The All-Freshman Team was rounded out by Eastern Michigan’s Bianca Cage, Ohio’s Kiyanna Black and Western Michigan’s Miracle Woods.

The Mid-American Conference will announce the individual and specialty award winners for the 2012-13 season on the eve of the FirstEnergy MAC Tournament moving into The Q on Tuesday, March 12th.
