MAC Men's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team went 1-1 in its doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  Ball State fell to No. 50 Michigan State (6-1) and then swept in-state rival Anderson (7-0). The Cardinals are now 7-5 on the season.

 

Against the Ravens, Ball State started strong sweeping all three doubles matches. 

 

As Ball State headed in singles up 1-0 the Cardinals managed to take all six singles matches from Anderson. Dalton Albertin, Patrick Elliott and Austin Sansone didn't lose a game over their opponents winning 6-0, 6-0. Ray Leonard, Imanol Arconada and Austin Smith also defeated their opponents in straight sets.

 

The Cardinals fell behind early in their match against No. 50 Michigan State after losing the doubles point. Ball State did take one doubles match from the Spartans after Alexandre Brym and Arconada took down Drew Lied and JP Mullan at the No. 3 spot.

 

Smith was the lone Cardinal to win in singles action. Smith took down Michigan State's Will Davis 4-6, 6-2 (10-6) at the No. 6 position.

 

The Ball State men's tennis team continues non-conference action March 7 at UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. First serve is at 2 p.m. (PT).

 

 

 

 

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed its weekend homestand on Saturday morning with 5-1 win over visiting Duquesne at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls are now 5-2 overall while the Dukes are now 7-3.

 

The teams played six singles matches only due to limitations on court time as the Bulls won the first five contests to be completed.

 

Sophomore Sebastian Ionescu improved to 6-1 in singles play as he was the first complete a match. Ionescu defeated Corey Robinson, 6-2, 6-3, in the number three contest. Damien David, at second singles, finished next with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Pete Carpenter. Akhil Mehta gave the Bulls a 3-0 edge as he downed Max Rubin, 6-4, 6-2.

 

Vusa Hove, playing first singles, gave the Bulls the clinching fourth point but it wasn't easy for the senior.  After dropping the opening set, 6-0, to Duquesne's Rich Robbie, Hove rallied in the second set for a 6-3 win to force a deciding third set.  The third set remained on serve until the 11th game when Hove broke serve to take a 6-5 lead and was serving for the match. However, Robbie rallied in the 12th game to force the 6-6 tiebreaker. Hove won the opening two points of the deciding breaker, but dropped the next three to trail 3-2. Hove then claimed the next five points in the tiebreaker for a 7-3 margin and winning the set, 7-6.

 

After the match was decided, Sergio Arevalillo won his sixth singles contest over Ben Klaas, 6-2, 7-6 (6). The lone blemish to the UB day was Pablo Alvarez's loss at fourth singles to Alex Aleman, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

 

Although the doubles matches were not played, head coach Lee Nickell felt that his team started quickly and never let up. "Our guys were ready to start right away. I'd much rather play doubles [due to court time it was not possible]. We have to test our guys differently. Every match we get better."

 

The Bulls travel to Princeton next Saturday, then return to  the Miller Tennis Center for a Sunday, March 3 matchup against NJIT.

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team scored a 6-1 win over visiting Niagara on Friday night at the Miller Tennis Center.  The Bulls won eight of the nine matches on the evening and improved to 4-2 overall.

 

UB took the opening doubles point with wins in the number one and two matches. At number one, the combo of sophomore Damien David and freshman Akhil Mehta improved to 5-1 with their 8-4 victory over David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Counsol. The number two team of Vusa Hove and Sebastian Ionescu clinched the point with their 8-3 win over Brandon Gallegos and Lorenz Schwojer. Niagara won the number three doubles match as Mathieu Lacasse and Michael Elortegui defeated UB's Sergio Arevalillo and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik, 8-4.

 

Mehta got things rolling for the Bulls in the singles contests being the first to complete his match. Mehta, at fifth singles, knocked off Schwojer, 6-1, 6-1 to give UB a 2-0 edge. Ionescu then scored a win at third singles with his 6-0, 6-1 win over Gallegos. David clinched the victory for the Bulls with the fourth point as he defeated Dufour-Counsol, 6-1, 6-2 at second singles. Hove, at number one, then came off the court with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Raymond to give the Bulls a 5-0 edge.

 

Niagara (4-3) picked up its lone win in the number six match as Lacasse defeated Arevalillo, 6-4, 6-2.

 

In the final match to conclude, the number five contest, freshman Pablo Alvarez used a pair of tiebreakers to defeat Elortegui, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6). Alvarez trailed in the 6-3 in the second set tiebreaker before rattling off five straight points to win the match.

 

Jason Simon also won an 8-4 pro set exhibition match over Joseph Smithyman for the Bulls.

 

"It was a solid victory," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "I can't fault any of the guys, it was businesslike."

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois men’s tennis team split Saturday at Boylan Tennis Center when it defeated Western Illinois, 7-0, and lost a tightly contested match with Green Bay, 4-1. The Huskies are now 7-3 this season, while WIU is 7-9 and the Phoenix are 7-1.

 

“It was a high low kind of a day for us. We won both of our doubles’ points which was awesome,” said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. “We were in a position to beat a very good Green Bay team, but we didn't because we did not finish and close out sets or matches when we were in position to do those things. We know where we have to improve and over the last two weeks we did that, but it was not enough for us today unfortunately.”

 

Northern Illinois made a clean sweep over Western Illinois, winning all nine of its matches against the Leathernecks. Dor Amir returned to the No. 1 position in the lineup versus WIU and was the lone Huskie to play three sets in the match, defeating Brad Holt, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6. At No. 6 Jovan Zeljkovic dominated in his match as he won every game over Brandon Meeker, 6-0, 6-0.

 

Following his 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 over Western Illinois, Frederic Cadieux extended his undefeated winning streak to nine matches. The streak would end there however, as Cadieux fell versus Green Bay’s Cox, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Amir and Zeljkovic at Nos. 1 and 6, respectively, both finished with the lead in their matches against the Phoenix but the contests went unfinished as Green Bay had sealed their victory.

 

Northern Illinois will return to the road next weekend when it takes on Butler and IUPUI March 3 and 4 in Indianapolis, Ind. and Milwaukee, Wis., respectively.

MILWAUKEE, WI - Toledo continued its recent success on the road by delivering Wisconsin-Green Bay a 5-2 loss at Marquette's Helfaer Tennis Center. UT improves to 13-6 on the season a day after beating MU by the same score on Saturday night in Milwaukee. 

 

"Our guys are realizing just how good they really are," UT head coach Al Wermer said. "Week-in-and-week-out they're showing their toughness and spirit. These wins make us even more motivated to come to practice next week and work even harder."

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold began the match by winning two of the three doubles flights for the early point over the 2012 Horizon League champions. Sophomore Grant Adams teamed up with senior Francisco Stuardo to win the second flight 9-7. Senior Bryant Dudzik and freshman Ryan Jorgensen clinched the advantage by claiming the third match 8-5.

 

In singles competition, the Rockets cleaned up the final three flights to seal the match. Sophomore Nicky Wong and Weigand each won in straight sets at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Then, Dudzik fought through a tough three-set match at the sixth position by winning 6-3 in the final set.

 

Adams also notched a straight-set victory at the second singles flight.

 

Toledo leaves for its Spring Break trip to California this week. UT is scheduled to play Loyola Marymount at 10:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, Feb. 28. Following that match, the Rockets will begin play at the Pacific Coast Championships in La Jolla, CA which runs through Sunday, March 3.

MILWAUKEE, WI - The Toledo men's tennis team dealt Marquette its first home loss of the season by a score of 5-2 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium Saturday night.  The loss was also the first in dual competition for the Golden Eagles not against a nationally ranked opponent.

 

"Another full team effort tonight in Marquette's own building," UT head coach Al Wermer said. "These guys are tough, and still getting tougher. Our doubles finally looked sharper and it simply came down to the next man stepping up in singles after Nicky went out."

 

Toledo opened the match by claiming the doubles point, posting wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Sophomores Tomas Stillman and Nicky Wong won the first flight 8-3, while senior Francisco Stuardo and sophomore Grant Adams claimed the second doubles match 8-6.  

 

The Rockets were able to post three singles victories to secure the team victory. Adams and Stuardo took the No. 2 and 3 matches in straight sets, respectively. Then, senior Bryant Dudzik and freshman Ryan Jorgensen produced two huge wins at the final two singles flights in straight sets. Stillman battled at the top flight, but lost a tight match in three sets.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Western Michigan men's tennis team staged a comeback against their Big Ten rival on Sunday afternoon, but fell just short as the Broncos lost to Iowa 4-3 in Iowa City. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-5 on the season. 

Nadin Indre won his second No. 1 singles match in as many days, defeating Matt Hagan to improve to 10-2 in dual match singles in 2013. Pablo Mora and Andrew Cahn also earned singles wins on Sunday, but the Hawkeyes snuck by the Broncos with three singles wins on the day to clinch the victory.

 

Iowa earned the doubles point with victories in the Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches, but the Broncos prevented the doubles sweep with an impressive performance in the No. 1 doubles match. Indre and Ruben Greiner teamed up to get an impressive win over Michael Swank and Garret Dunn, winning 8-6 in the last match off the court.

 

Indre cruised to a victory in singles play later in the afternoon, downing Hagan in the No. 1 singles match thanks to an inspiring performance. Indre made quick work of Hagan, downing him 6-3, 6-2 for his second No. 1 singles performance of the weekend. Mora and Cahn also registered wins on Sunday, but each required three full sets to win. Mora came back from a set down against Michael Swank in the No. 5 singles match, but put together two solid sets at the end to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Meanwhile, Cahn survived a second set loss to win a tight third set, coming back from a final set point to win 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 against Dominic Patrick in the No. 6 singles.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Junior Nadin Indre earned a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent in the No. 1 singles match, but the Western Michigan men's tennis team was unable to keep pace with #36 Drake in falling 6-1 in Iowa City on Saturday.  With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-4 on the season.

 

Indre played an impressive No. 1 singles match against the Bulldogs' James McKie, who entered the match ranked as the #72 singles player in the nation.  The junior from Romania controlled the tempo from the outset, defeating McKie 6-2, 6-2 to tie the team match at 1-1 after the Broncos had dropped the doubles point.

 

However, the Bulldogs were able to re-take the reins of the match, clinching the team victory with three straight sets wins.  Ruben Greiner competed well with Robin Goodman in the No. 3 singles match before falling 6-3, 6-3; Pablo Mora lost at No. 5 to Ben Mullis, 6-1, 6-4; and #45 Anis Ghorbel clinched the team victory with a win over Ross VanderPloeg in the No. 2 singles.

 

The Broncos did manage to make things interesting on the other two courts, however, keeping the final score of the match in doubt for a while.  Aaron Wong pushed Alen Salibasic to a third set tiebreaker by coming back to win the second set, but ultimately could not complete the comeback in losing 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (8).  Andrew Cahn started quick against Ben Lott in the No. 6 singles match, taking the first set, but lost two full sets to close in falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
