LANCASTER, PA - The Buffalo wrestling team earned three individual victories, but closed out the 2013 duals season with a 31-10 loss to 14th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers. The dual was part of the NWCA Regional Festival, hosted by Franklin & Marshall University.

 

Max Soria started out the match with a 4-1 win at 125 pounds, beating Dominique Price 4-1 thanks to a second period takedown and a ride out through the period. The Boilermakers won the next three matches big, with a technical fall at 133, a pin at 141 and a 4-0 decision at 149.

 

Blake Roulo snapped the losing streak with a wild win at 157 over Tom Churchard, who came into the day ranked in various national rankings. Tied at nine after the first two periods, Roulo started on bottom and got the escape to go up one. After being taken down by Churchard, Roulo got out with another escape to tie it again. With riding time on Churchard's side, Roulo needed a takedown to avoid overtime and got just that, taking him down and riding him out to end the match with a 13-12 win. That brought Buffalo to 14-6 in the team score.

 

The Bulls would come even closer after yet another win for Mark Lewandowski. The senior ended his dual meet career in a big way, with a 10-0 shutout of Pat Robinson. After a quick takedown and near fall points gave him a 5-0 lead in the first period, he cruised to his ninth straight dual meet win and ninth straight overall win, dating back to Jan. 6.

 

That would turn out to be the final win of the day for the Bulls, who end the regular season with a 1-11 record in duals. Purdue improved to 16-6 with the win.

 

The Bulls will now rest up and prepare for the Mid-American Conference championships, to be hosted by Buffalo on March 10. The all-day event at Alumni Arena will begin in the morning and run all day. Be sure to follow BuffaloBulls.com for updates leading up to the day of the event.

No. 11 Chippewas Earn 12th Straight Over Michigan State, 27-10

 

EAST LANSING - The No. 11 Central Michigan wrestling program continued a pair of streaks in an impressive 27-10 victory over in-state foe Michigan State Friday night.  The Chippewas (17-3) earned their 10th straight dual victory of the 2013 season and their 12th straight victory over the Spartans (4-14) by claiming seven of the 10 bouts on the night.

 

Bonus points were earned in three matches as junior Craig Kelliher earned a 10-2 major decision, No. 2 senior Ben Bennett claimed victory by technical fall inhis fifth straight match and No. 7 senior Scotti Sentes pinned his opponent in just 1:39.

 

The match started at 141 pounds with junior Scott Mattingly earning a 4-0 decision over Nick Timble and senior Donnie Corby put the Chippewas in front 6-0 with a close 3-2  decision over Dan Osterman. Corby was down 2-1 entering thethird period, but used a takedown to secure the victory.

 

Sophomore Mike Ottinger won his 10th straight match with a 3-2 decision over Nick Proctor and No. 11Christian Cullinan won 5-0 over Brenan Lyon to complete the CMU victories.

 

The Chippewas now have a 16 day break until their next competition when they will head to the Mid-American Conference Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. CMU has won the last 11 MAC Championships crowns.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team took one last tune-up opportunity before the Mid-American Conference Championships by participating at the National Collegiate Open Sunday, Feb. 24. Three wrestlers placed in the top six and received National Collegiate Open All-American status.

 

Redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg took second place at 197 lbs. by winning his first three matches of the day. Whitenburg was unable to wrestle in the final round and had to settle for runner-up accolades.

 

At 133 lbs., redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto took fifth spot in his first action since December. Pizzuto was victorious in his first two rounds before losing in the third. A win against Alfredo Gray of Kent State University put him at 3-1 on the day. The fifth-place bout was not contested.

 

Also seeing his first action since the 2012 calendar year was redshirt junior Jared Germaine, who won three consecutive bouts before having to pull out of the event. For his three straight wins, Germaine was still awarded sixth place by default.

 

The MAC Championships will be held Sunday, March 10, in Buffalo N.Y.

MINNEAPOLIS - For the second time in as many days, the Tigers topped a higher-ranked opponent. Saturday night the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes fell victim to the No. 6 Tigers in the third place match of the 2013 NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals. Mizzou trailed by seven with three weight classes remaining, but wins by seniors Mike Larson, Brent Haynes, and Dom Bradley propelled the Tigers to victory. Top-ranked Hawkeyes Matt McDonough (125) and Derek St. John (157) both lost to No. 4 Alan Waters and No. 19 Kyle Bradley, respectively.

 

Junior Alan Waters capped off a fantastic weekend in Minnesota with a win over the No. 1-ranked McDonough. Waters got on the board early with a takedown 30 seconds into the bout, which was all Mizzou's leadoff man needed. Waters added an escape in the second and a riding time point after two minutes of advantage over the top-ranked 125 pounder.

 

"That's a match I've been looking forward to for the past three years," said Waters. "I haven't had the chance to wrestle him in my college career yet, and it's a big win for me. But I go out there expecting to win so it isn't anything that I didn't expect from myself. I want that to happen in the finals at Nationals. This doesn't mean anything other than maybe moving up in the rankings, so I'm just looking forward to a possible rematch in March."

 

Waters was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week last week. He improves to 26-0 this year and is only six wins away from 100 as a Tiger.

 

At 157 pounds, junior Kyle Bradley followed suit by defeating No. 1 Derek St. John. Bradley was down 3-2 as time ticked away, and with 27 seconds remaining, Bradley connected on a double-leg takedown. The Tiger grappler held strong on top for the final seconds and emerged with a 4-3 win. Bradley went 2-1 on the weekend with his other win coming against No. 18 Josh Demas of Ohio State in the first sudden victory period, 4-2.

 

Down seven points with three bouts remaining, the Tigers needed big performances from their senior upperweights. At 184, No. 13 Mike Larson fell behind 2-0 early to No. 17 Ethen Lofthouse after a Lofthouse takedown in the final minute of the first. Larson escaped after starting down in the second, and finally took the lead in the third with a two-point nearfall over Lofthouse. Larson took the match 3-2.

 

No. 17 Brent Haynes tallied his 109th career victory in a tight 1-0 decision over Nathan Burak. Haynes was able to escape the freshman's hold after starting down in the second to get the deciding point. Burak chose a neutral start in the third but was unable to score against Haynes. The win closed Iowa's lead to two points with top-ranked Dom Bradley on deck.

 

Bradley finished off the rally. The match went to a second sudden victory period, and after nearly nine and a half minutes of wrestling, Bradley sent the Tigers home victorious. The sixth-year senior secured a takedown over No. 11 Bobby Telford with 28 seconds remaining for a 4-2 win, his 32nd of the year.

 

Despite a forfeit at 133 pounds, Mizzou battled past the second-ranked program in the nation for their first win against the Hawkeyes since the program's beginning in 1923. The Tigers finished their dual season with a 16-3 record, arguably their best season since 2008-09 when the squad went 18-4.

 

"This was a big win for the program. We've never beaten Iowa, and to go out there and get it and win six matches, that was good. That was a good win for us," said Head Coach Brian Smith.

 

The Tigers now will take a few weeks off before hitting the road to Buffalo, NY for their first-ever appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 10. Following the MAC Championships, this year's campaign will culminate in Des Moines, Iowa for the 2013 NCAA Championships. MINNEAPOLIS - The top-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated the No. 6 Tigers Saturday afternoon in the NWCA National Duals semifinals, 22-9. The Tigers got on the board quickly with a win at 125 pounds, but the Cowboys won seven of the next nine bouts and were on their way to another victory over Mizzou this season.

 

The Tigers picked up wins at 125, 141, and 197 pounds. Waters won for the second time over OSU freshman, Eddie Klimara by a score of 3-1. Nicholas Hucke also found a way to get a 4-1 decision over Julian Feikert at 141. In a match where reversals were the popular scoring technique, senior Brent Haynes defeated Darnell Bortz of OSU, 10-4.

 

Missouri lost a few tight matches, especially at 133, 174, and 285 pounds. Senior Nathan McCormick fell to No. 6 Jon Morrison despite defeating his counterpart twice this season. Heavyweight Dom Bradley also dropped his first match of the year against No. 3 Alan Gelogaev, 4-3. The heavyweight match almost got out of hand halfway through the second frame after Bradley ran Gelogaev out of bounds. Both grapplers were docked for unsportsmanlike conduct after the altercation.

 

The Tigers will face off against the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes in Saturday's third place match. Oklahoma State will meet up with host-school Minnesota with the winner being crowned the 2013 NWCA National Duals champion. The action kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Williams Arena in Minnesota.

 

 

 

MINNEAPOLIS - The Mizzou Wrestling program won eight of 10 matches Friday night against No. 5 Ohio State to advance to the semifinal round of the 2013 NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals. Junior Alan Waters only needed three minutes and eight seconds to give the Tigers a lead that they would not surrender, and after their 28-6 victory, Mizzou will now prepare for a rematch against their former Big 12 rivals, Oklahoma State.

 

The Tigers never trailed in Friday night's dual against the Buckeyes. Waters opened up the night with a pin over No. 12 Nikko Triggas, and after tough losses against No. 1 Logan Stieber and No. 2 Hunter Stieber at 133 and 141 pounds, the Tigers wouldn't lose again. The Stieber brothers defeated No. 4 Nathan McCormick and Nicholas Hucke to tie the dual at six after three weights, but the Tigers followed with 22 unanswered team points.

 

In a dual where 17 of 20 grapplers were ranked, the Tigers won four bouts where they were ranked lower than Buckeye wrestlers. At 149 pounds, No. 14 Drake Houdashelt held strong on top and was able to muster 2:02 of riding time against the eleventh-ranked Cam Tessari en route to a 4-2 decision. Junior Kyle Bradley followed with a win 17 seconds into the first sudden victory period over No. 18 Josh Demas by the score of 4-2 as well. Brent Haynes, ranked No. 17, topped No. 12 Andrew Campollatano by decision, 5-0.

 

The biggest upset of the night came at 174 pounds, where the pesky Tiger Todd Porter once again took down a higher-ranked opponent in No. 6 Nick Heflin. Heflin scored first at 1:45 in the first period and only allowed an escape point to Porter through five minutes of wrestling. The thirteenth-ranked Porter never quit attacking though, and after an escape in the third, Porter secured a takedown with 33 seconds remaining. Porter's 4-3 win over Heflin was his third win over a higher-ranked opponent this season, with one of those coming against his next opponent in Chris Perry of Oklahoma State. Porter defeated the then-No. 1 Perry back on February 1 by major decision 9-1.

 

After sitting out of last weekend's Regional bouts, senior Mike Larson defeated No. 20 C.J. Magrum by a 5-0 final thanks to a late takedown as time expired in the third. At heavyweight, the nation's top-ranked Dom Bradley added a 12-4 major decision against Ohio State's Kosta Karageorge after tacking on five takedowns and a reversal. The Tigers improved to 15-2 in duals this season after the 28-6 victory.

 

"We wrestled well. We wrestled really well," said Head Coach Brian Smith. "We stuck with our game plans. We prepared all week about what we have to do in the top position and bottom positions and we stuck with it. And really, we won a lot of tight matches. The guys just kept with their game plans and what they do best. So now we will enjoy it for a few minutes and then we will get ready for Oklahoma State tomorrow."

 

Saturday afternoon will feature a rematch of the Tigers and Cowboys. Oklahoma State defeated Illinois 33-3 on the adjacent mat Friday to also advance to this year's semifinals.

 

OSU defeated Mizzou 21-13 earlier this season in Columbia. The dual will sure feature many exciting matchups including No. 4 Nathan McCormick vs. No. 6 Jon Morrison, No. 1 Dom Bradley vs. No. 3 Alan Gelogaev, and No. 13 Todd Porter in a rematch against No. 2 Chris Perry.

 

 

 

 

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Northern Illinois wrestling team capped their 2012-13 regular season Sunday afternoon with wins against Gardner-Webb and Cleveland State.  The pair of victories bumps NIU's record to 10-8 on the season. The Huskies also exceeded their dual win total (eight) from a season ago in the first year under head coach Ryan Ludwig.

 

NIU began the day with a come-from-behind win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Buldogs, 22-12. Despite trailing 9-6 at the midway point, the Huskies captured four of the last five matches to emerge victorious.

 

"I thought we started slow against Gardner-Webb," Ludwig said. "Parker (Settecase) was able to get the ball rolling with great intensity at 197. Jared (Torrence) had a big win over a nationally-ranked opponent in (Travis) Porter. Andrew Morse wrestled with great focus to defeat a returning NCAA qualifier in Medved."

 

The Huskies fell behind early with a pair of losses by decision. Matt Mougin fell in a tight 5-3 decision at 174 pounds against Hunter Gamble. Following that, Bryan Loughlin dropped a 9-4 loss against Gray Jones at 184.

 

Yet, NIU won the next two to tie the dual at six apiece. The rally began when Parker Settecase scored a 9-4 decision over Blake Salyer at 197. Jared Torrence knotted the dual up at heavyweight by notching a 5-3 win against Travis Porter, a victory that should boost the Huskie heavyweight's NCAA chances.

 

The Runnin' Bulldogs, though, moved back into the lead following the 125 pounds match. Derek Elmore fell in an overtime heartbreaker to Cortez Starks, 7-5.

 

That point would be the last lead GWU would hold. Nick Smith gave the Huskies their first lead of the day behind a convincing 17-6 major decision against Robbie Golde at 133. NIU got a lot more breathing room courtesy of Kevin Fanta's second period pin of Davante Andujar.

 

Two more decisions gave NIU 16 straight points and a 22-9 lead. Rob Jillard scored a 7-3 win against Ryan Medved at 149. The Huskie scoring was completed when Andrew Morse registered a huge 7-2 win against 2012 NCAA qualifier Alex Medved. GWU put the final points on the board when Sam Bennett fell to Justin Guthrie, 4-3.

Northern Illinois capped their day with a convincing 26-11 win against the Cleveland State Vikings.

 

"We started out of the gate much better against an improved Cleveland State squad," Ludwig said. "(Bryan) Loughlin won a hard-fought battle. Jared (Torrence) came out on the wrong end of a controversial match. He pushed the pace and wrestled hard. Nick Smith beat a very dangerous opponent with a great deal of hustle."

 

The Huskies set the tone early against CSU by racing out to an early 13-0 lead. Matt Mougin started things at 174 with a 12-3 major decision against Koort Leyrer. Bryan Loughlin built on that momentum by scoring a 9-3 win against Bobby Blankenship. However, NIU grabbed full control of the dual when Parker Settecase pinned Corbin Boone early in the second period.

 

The Vikings moved closer by taking three of the next four matches, trimming the NIU lead to 16-8. Jared Torrence lost in overtime at heavyweight to Riley Shaw, 3-1, with a questionable takedown call. Derek Elmore dropped an 8-3 decision against Ben Willeford. During that match, Cleveland State was penalized one team point for a bench foul.

 

Nick Smith kept CSU at bay by defeating Mike Carlone in an 8-5 decision at 133, putting NIU ahead, 16-5. Tyler Argue, making a spot start for Kevin Fanta at 141, lost in a 10-6 decision against Nick Flannery.

 

Similar to the previous dual of the day, NIU put the dual away with wins at 149 and 157. Rob Jillard scored a 14-2 major decision against R.J. LaBeef. Andrew Morse followed that up with a third period pin against Mike Mencini at 157. Sam Bennett closed the dual with a 7-5 loss against Corey Carlo.

 

"Overall, I think we can take a lot of things away from this weekend, both positive and negative, that we will figure out and apply at the MAC tournament," Ludwig said. "

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Ohio University wrestling team concluded its 2012-13 regular season on a high note as it posted a pair of dominating wins over Cleveland State (37-6) and Gardner-Webb (40-6). With the back-to-back wins, Ohio collected its sixth and seventh-consecutive victories and improved to 11-5 on the year.

 

In the `Cats first match against Cleveland State, Ohio wasted little time in disposing of the Vikings as it went up 22-0, winning the first six bouts.

 

Redshirt freshman Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) got the `Cats going with a first period fall of CSU's Kort Leyrer at 174 to pick up his 31st win of the year and capture his 11th-consecutive triumph. Two bouts later, fellow redshirt freshman Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) registered a major decision over Corbin Boone to put Ohio up 13-0.

 

The `Cats closed the match with back-to-back pins courtesy of Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) and Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio). Hightower's pin was his 11th on the year.

 

In the final match of the afternoon against Gardner-Webb, Ohio once again started fast as it captured the first seven bouts to open up a 34-0 lead.

 

Walters once again got the Bobcats off to a strong start as he picked up his second win of the afternoon, GWU's Hunter Gamble to earn his 32nd win and his 12th-consecutive triumph. Sophomore Michael Duckworth (Liberty, Ind.) and Wellington followed with back-to-back major decisions.

 

Freshmen Joseph Munoz (South St. Paul, Minn.) and Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) also tallied pins for the Bobcats to highlight competition.

 

Junior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) also picked up a pair of wins on the day to improve to 30-8 on the year. Johnson became the second individual on the squad to pick up his 30th win on the year.

 

Ohio will take a week off before it takes part in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. The Bobcats will take to the mat, beginning at 10 a.m. on March 10.
