MAC Announces Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week

Women's Swimmer of the Week:
Bekka Westrick, Miami University
Senior, Fairfield, Ohio (Fairfield) 
The senior from Fairfield, Ohio continues to have one of the greatest individual seasons in RedHawk history, winning three individual events and swimming the third leg for Miami's victorious  200 medley relay team in Saturday's 176.5-123.5 triumph at Ohio. Individually, Westrick edged out her opponent by three-100ths of a second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.29), followed that up with a victory in the 100 free (51.41), then recorded a win in the 100 butterfly (55.07). Miami ended the dual meet season with a perfect 6-0 record in Mid-American Conference match-ups and had an 11-1 record overall.

Men's Swimmer of the Week: 
Joe Baumgartner, Miami University
Sophomore, St. Louis, Mo. (Lindbergh)
Baumgartner had first-place finishes in each of the three races he swam Saturday in the RedHawks' 149-118 victory over Ball State. The sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. recorded a winning time of 21.32 in the 50 freestyle, then followed that up with a victory in the 100 free (47.01). Baumgartner was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that touched first (1:26.20). Miami finished the dual meet portion of its season with a 4-4-1 overall mark, 2-2 in Mid-American Conference duals

Adele Schultz, Eastern Michigan
Freshman, Gelorup, Australia (Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School)
Freshman Adele Schultz was EMU's top-performer at the 2013 Ohio State Winter Invitational, Feb. 9-10. The Gelorup, Australia native placed in the top-six in four different races. Her best came in the 200-butterfly where she took second in 2:06.87. The freshman also took third in the 400-individual medley, touching the wall in 4:36.14. Schultz finished fifth in the 100-butterfly (57.85) and sixth in the 200-breaststroke (2:24.87).
Laurin Williams, Ohio
Junior, Shoreline, Wash. (Shorewood)
Laurin had a very strong weekend for Ohio Swimming and Diving, helping pace the Bobcats to a 1-1 mark in dual meets against Youngstown State and Miami. The junior swam in five events over the course of two days, winning three of them and finishing third on two occasions. Williams picked up her first victory of the weekend in the 1000 freestyle against Youngstown State. The junior swam a 10:21.71 in the race, beating her closest competitor by a full 33 seconds. She then placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.85) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:14.34) against the Penguins.The junior cut more than nine seconds from her 1000 freestyle time on Saturday, touching the wall first in a brisk 10:12.15 to beat the second-place finisher by nearly eight seconds. Williams followed this up with a win in the 500 freestyle, finishing in a time of 4:58.94. 
Frankie DeMaria, Eastern Michigan
Senior, Nishkayuna, N.Y. (Nishkayuna)
Senior Frankie DeMaria posted three top-five finishes this weekend at the 2013 Ohio State Winter Invitational. His best finish came in the 1,650-freestyle, when completed the distance in 15:59.21. DeMaria also posted fourth place finishes in both the 500-freestyle and 200-freestyle. He touched the wall in 4:33.29 and 1:43.54, respectively.
