MAC Women's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team notched two road victories on Saturday, taking down Dayton 5-2 in the afternoon and Wright State 6-1 at night.

 

Akron (3-5) swept doubles and Nos. 1-4 singles versus Dayton (4-7), then did the same in doubles and won at five of six singles positions against Wright State (3-3).

 

The Zips' No. 1 doubles team of Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria highlighted the day by improving its win streak to five matches with an 8-3 victory over UD's Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens, and an 8-2 decision against WSU's Kayla Tuscany and Alex Bastoch.

 

Pantusart and Jogasuria took both of their singles contests as well, alternating at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the lineup. Pantusart won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 against Dayton's Sammi Hornbarger, and 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 versus WSU's Bastoch. Jogasuria defeated Dayton's Peck 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, and WSU's Tuscany 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1.

 

"Angelina is playing at an excellent level in singles, and Angelina and Prang are solid in doubles," third-year Zips head coach Brandon Padgett said. "However, we have a lot of work to do and collectively we have to get a lot better."

 

Akron won eight of its 12 singles matches today in straight sets, and the three singles points it gave up were lost in three sets.

 

UA competes at home next weekend, playing host to East Tennessee State on Friday at 1 p.m. ET and nationally-ranked Oregon on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held at LaTuchie Tennis Center.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Big Ten foe Indiana Sunday evening in Bloomington.  With the loss the Cardinals drop to 7-2 on the season.

 

The Hoosiers went up 1-0 over the Cardinals after winning the doubles point.  Courtney Wild and Courtney Earnest won two games over No. 31 Sophie Garre and Leslie Hureau at the No. 1 position but lost 8-2.  At No. 2 doubles Bethany Moore and Kristel Sanders also took two games from Indiana but resulted in an 8-2 loss for the twosome.

 

In singles action the Hoosier won all six matches in straight sets.  Moore won four games at the No. 4 spot but lost to Garre 7-4, 6-2 while Kristel Sanders also won four games against Shannon Murdy at No. 5 singles but lost 6-4, 6-0.

 

The Ball State women's tennis team continues non-conference action on the road at Marquette Sunday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. (EST).

FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Ball State women's tennis team defeated in-state rival IPFW 5-2 Friday nigh in Fort Wayne.  With the win the Cardinals improve to 7-1 on the season.

 

Ball State took the doubles point from the Mastodons after Courtney Wild and Courtney Earnest took down the IPFW twosome of Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer by a score of 8-4.  At the No. 2 spot, Bethany Moore paired up with teammate Kristel Sanders for the 8-4 defeat over Miloslava Shustova and Theresa Neumeyr.

 

In singles play, Earnest put the Cardinals up 2-0 over the Mastodons with a straight set victory overt Henestrosa at the No. 2 slot.  Ashlyn Rang dropped her match at No. 6 singles to make the match 2-1.  Wild would win at the No. 1 position and Sanders would follow at her respective spot which put the Cardinals up 4-1.  Bethany Moore dropped her first set to Theresa Neumeyr but came back to win 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 5 slot.

 

 

 

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season when the Cardinals swept in-state rival Butler Thursday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.

 

At No. 2 doubles the Cardinals twosome of Bethany Moore and Kristel Sanders captured the 8-0 victory over Clare Cornelius and Kristen Haeberlein.  The doubles tandem of Courtney Wild and Courtney Earnest were up 5-1 in their match but did not play through after Ball State has already won the doubles point.

 

In singles action Moore put the Cardinals up 2-0 after not giving up a game to Haeberlin, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.  Ayaka Terashi defeated Cornelius at No. 3 singles.  Earnest and Wild each won their matches at their respective positions to give Ball State the 7-0 victory.  The Cardinals did not have to play No. 5 or No. 6 singles due to Butler forfeiting both matches.

 

 

 

 

 

The Bowling Green State University tennis team increased its winning streak to seven matches Sunday morning (Feb. 10), picking up a 4-3 victory over the visiting University of Cincinnati.  The non-conference dual match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

 

With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-1 on the season.  BGSU has won seven consecutive dual matches since a road loss to then-No. 19 Notre Dame, and the Falcons are a perfect 5-0 at the PTC in 2012-13.

 

The Brown and Orange had little trouble during the doubles portion of the match, earning a sweep for the first point of the day.  At the number-one flight, juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland defeated Ashleigh Witte and Sierra Sullivan by an 8-3 final. That was the closest result during doubles.

 

BG captured 8-2 results at both the second and third flights, with two seniors winning in each case.  The number-two flight saw Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb topping Caitlin O'Gara and Jasmine Lee, while Mary Hill and Jade Johnson dropped just two games in a third-flight win over Kelly Poggensee-Wei and Kristina Georgieva.

 

A pair of Falcon freshmen, Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis, downed their UC opponents, Hannah Wille and Carly Wilson by an 8-0 final in a fourth-flight match that did not count in the final scoring.

 

The Falcons won the opening set in all six singles matches.  In three of those contests, BGSU went on to win the second set, earning the required four points to capture the overall match win.  The other three singles contests, however, saw the Bearcats battle back to capture three-set victories.

 

BG's juniors won in straight sets, as Reuland dropped just two total games in her sweep of Lee at the top flight.  Both sets of that match ended in 6-1 scores.

 

Chiricosta rolled through a 6-0 first-set win against O'Gara, then pulled out a 7-5 win in the second set at flight number two.

 

Brozovich rolled along to a sixth-flight win, dropping only four games in a sweep of Hannah Wille.

 

Witte, Poggensee-Wei and Sullivan all recorded come-from-behind victories for the Bearcats.  Witte downed Eccleston in third-flight action, while Poggensee-Wei defeated Hill at the fourth flight.  Both of those matches ended with a 6-3 result in the third set.

 

The fifth-flight battle saw Sullivan eke out a 6-4 win over Grubb in the third set to capture the match.

 

Sunday marked the fifth time in the last seven matches that the Falcons have captured all three doubles contests.  BGSU has won the doubles point in all seven of those matches, and the Falcons are a combined 19-2 in doubles (not counting 'fourth-flight' matches) in that time.

 

In singles play, Sunday was the first time in BG's seven-match winning streak that the Falcons did not win at least five of the six matches.  BG has a record of 35-7 in singles play at the top-six flights during that time.

 

Several Falcons increased their personal winning streaks on Sunday. Chiricosta's two wins give her 13 consecutive victories (singles and doubles combined), while Brozovich has won her last 11 matches. Grubb saw her win streak snapped at 13 on Sunday. Prior to her singles match vs. the Bearcats, she had not lost since the Falcons' Jan. 18 match at Notre Dame.

 

A number of Falcons continued their climb up the BGSU records lists.  Eccleston's doubles win was the 86th of her career, and she is just three behind school record-holder Christine Chiricosta (89 doubles wins from 2008-11) on that list.  Eccleston now has 152 overall wins at BG, ranking third on that list. She trails second-place Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) by just one win.

 

Nikki Chiricosta is now tied for 13th in singles wins, with 68, and she has moved into sole possession of 13th place on the career doubles wins list, with 67.  Chiricosta has 135 total wins at BG, good for 12th in school history.

 

No fewer than three Falcons -- Hill, Johnson and Reuland -- all picked up their 60th doubles win on Sunday. They are tied for 17th on that list. Grubb is deadlocked for 15th with 63 doubles victories.

 

Reuland is now tied for 18th on the combined career wins chart, with 124 overall victories.  Grubb and Hill rank 23rd and 24th, respectively, as Grubb has 114 wins and Hill 112.  Johnson is now 29th in BG history with 91 career wins.

 

This season, Chiricosta has a stellar 37-11 record, while Reuland is 35-13.  Grubb is 29-10 on the season, while Brozovich improved to 28-15 in her first season as a Falcon.  Every member of the team has at least 18 wins in 2012-13, and all eight players are at least four games over the .500 mark.

 

The Falcons are idle from intercollegiate competition next weekend, but BGSU continues a season-long seven-match homestand with a pair of contests at the Perrysburg Tennis Center the following weekend.  BG will take on IPFW on Feb. 22 and California (Pa.) on Feb. 24.

The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up yet another win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, downing Cleveland State University by a 6-1 final on Friday afternoon (Feb. 8). The win was the Falcons' sixth in a row.

 

BGSU is now 6-1 on the season, with the lone loss coming on the road against No. 19 Notre Dame.  The Vikings drop to 1-4 in dual-match play.

 

Six different Falcons won at both singles and doubles on Friday as the Falcons improved to 4-0 at the Perrysburg Tennis Center this year to date.

 

The Falcons captured doubles matches at each of the top-two flights, with juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland downing CSU's Alex Power and Kara Sherwood by an 8-4 outcome at flight number one.  The second flight saw Falcon seniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb top Alex Bush and Maria Lazaris, 8-5.  The Vikings pulled out a narrow match at the third flight, as Mathilde Orange and Ellen Folkers squeaked past seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson, 8-6.

 

In singles action, the Falcons captured five of the six matches, each in the minimum number of sets.  Chiricosta wasted little time in defeating Bush at the top flight, losing just one game in each set.  Reuland also dropped only one game in her opening set at the second flight, and the junior was leading Power, 4-1, in the second set when the CSU junior was forced to retire.

 

Eccleston downed Orange in third-flight action by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, while Grubb and freshman Katie Brozovich picked up wins at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.  Grubb defeated Lazaris, while Brozovich downed Nicole Janek.

 

Freshman Drew Fillis picked up a pair of Friday wins, losing only two games in a straight-sets sweep of Mengdi Liu in singles, and teaming with Brozovich for an 8-1 doubles victory.  The Falcons and Vikings played two singles matches and one doubles contest that did not count in the final match scoring.

 

CSU's lone point came when Sherwood defeated Hill at the fourth singles flight, coming out on top of a 7-5 decision in the second set.

 

Eccleston continued her climb toward the top of BGSU's career wins lists.  Her doubles win on Friday was the 85th of her BG tenure, moving her past Jenny Cheung (84 wins from 1995-98) into sole possession of second place on that list.  She trails school record-holder Christine Chiricosta by just four wins, as Chiricosta posted 89 doubles victories from 2008-11.

 

Eccleston's two wins on Friday give her a total of 151 combined career wins as a Falcon, the third-highest total in school history. She trails second-place Deidee Bissinger (153 wins from 1997-2000) by just two wins. Christine Chiricosta holds that record as well, with 178 total wins during her four years at BG.

 

Nikki Chiricosta, just a junior, now has 133 total wins, ranking her 12th at BG.  She moved into a tie for 13th place on the doubles wins list, with 66, and now has 67 singles victories to place 15th in Falcon annals.

 

Another junior, Reuland, moved into the top 20 on the combined career wins list on Friday.  With two victories vs. CSU, Reuland now has 122 wins as a Falcon, and moved past Patty Bank (121 wins from 1993-96) into 20th place.  Reuland is tied with Bank for 19th on the singles wins list, with 63, and Reuland has 59 doubles wins, placing her in a tie for 18th on that BG chart.

 

Grubb won a pair of Friday matches, and now has 113 total wins to rank 23rd in school history.  Her 51 singles wins places her 24th at BG, and her total of 62 doubles wins ranks her 16th on that list.

 

Additionally, Grubb increased her current personal win streak to 12 matches.  Her last loss came in doubles play vs. Notre Dame back on Jan. 18, but she has won every match -- seven singles and five doubles contests -- since that time.

 

Several other Falcons kept win streaks alive as well, as Chiricosta has won 11 consecutive matches and Brozovich nine.  Johnson saw an eight-match winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon.

 

Chiricosta now has a team-leading 35 wins this season, with Reuland right behind with 33.  Grubb now has 28 victories, while Brozovich has 26 and Eccleston 24.  In fact, every player on the team has at least 17 total wins, and each of the eight Falcons is at least four games above the .500 mark.

 

BGSU is now a perfect 8-0 all-time in matches against Cleveland State, including a 7-0 record under coach Penny Dean and a 3-0 mark at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

 

BGSU's season-long seven-match homestand continues Sunday morning (Feb. 10), as the Falcons host the University of Cincinnati.  That match will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the PTC.

BUFFALO, NY – Due to an impending winter storm scheduled to hit the Boston area this weekend, the University at Buffalo women's tennis team has had its weekend matches at Harvard and Boston University cancelled by the host institutions.  These events will not be made up.

 

Buffalo will return home on Feb. 16 to host ASA College at the Miller Tennis Center.

 

 

 

 

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team put a a strong fight, but came up short Friday, Feb. 8, suffering its first home loss of the spring. The defeat came in a 6-1 decision to the University of Louisville at the Chippewa Club.

 

"Despite the loss today, we made progress in our intensity on the court," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Klara picked up a great win over a nationally ranked player, and Ankita battled very closely with her opponent.  Louisville is a great team that should be in the national rankings next week after their win over No. 41 Minnesota. So, despite some of the scores I liked what I saw on the court, and if we continue to make progress each week, we can become a tough team to beat."

 

The Cardinals swept the doubles point, getting off to a 1-0 lead in the match.

 

In singles, Klara Supejova was strong again at the No. 2 slot, scoring a 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 win over No. 62 ranked Rebecca Shine. However, she was the only EMU student-athlete to pick up a singles point in the match. Supejova is now 17-4 overall and 8-1 in singles play this spring.

 

The Eagles return to action Saturday, Feb. 23, with a doubleheader at the Chippewa Club. EMU hosts the University of Dayton at 1 p.m. with a nightcap against Oakland University at 8:30 p.m..

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- Miami battled Marshall for over four hours on Sunday, taking four singles matches to three sets, but the Thundering Herd escaped with a 5-2 victory over the RedHawks. Nimisha Mohan and Alix Thurman gained wins for Miami's points.

 

Marshall (3-4) jumped out to the 1-0 by winning two of the three double matches. The Thundering Herd claimed the No. 1 tilt by an 8-4 margin, then won at No. 3, 8-2. The duo of Mohan and Christiana Raymond closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win in the middle match.

 

The hosts surged ahead at the beginning of singles play, winning the first set in three of the opening five matches. The early lead resulted in a 2-0 advantage as the No. 5 match went to Marshall, 6-3, 6-4. Mohan rebounded from first-set loss to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, but the Thundering Herd stole the next point for a 3-1 lead. Raymond dropped the first set at No. 1, 6-2, but surged back for a 6-2 win in the second. She led 3-2 in the decider, but dropped three straight games to Dominika Zaprazna, enroute to a 6-4 setback.

 

Christine Guerrazzi won her first set, 6-2, at No. 4, but let a 3-2 lead in the second slip away. Dana Oppinger rallied for a 6-4 win, then a 6-3 victory to clinch the match for Marshall. Thurman was also pressed to three sets, escaping with a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (9-7) victory in her first career appearance in the No. 2 flight. She was down 6-3 in the final tiebreaker, fighting off three match points.

 

The No. 6 match, which started late due to court space, went to Marshall 7-5, 6-1.

 

Miami (2-5) returns to action next Sunday when it hosts Middle Tennessee State. The action is slated to being at 10 a.m. at Hamilton's Riverside Athletic Club.

 

 

 

 

 

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team continued its excellent start to their 2013 spring season with a 7-0 victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois.

 

The Huskies earned their fifth win in six matches this spring, while the Cougars fell to 2-3.

 

The Huskies won two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point with the No. 1 duo of Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre keeping their perfect spring record intact with an 8-3 win over Lindsey Raymond and Kali Donner. NIU's team of Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald recorded an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to give Northern Illinois the point.

 

Spurred on by the win in doubles, Northern Illinois swept through the Cougars' singles line-up. Youel and Dekkinga scored dominating victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Mary Malkin's win at No. 4 singles was equally as impressive as she took out Amanda Miller, 6-1, 6-1.

 

Youel improved her singles record to 6-0 with her win to go along with her unblemished mark in doubles.

 

"This was a very solid performance," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell after the win. "SIUE came out very strong in the doubles. We needed discipline to be successful and that is what this team showed today. We are young but we are beginning to figure it out."

 

Northern Illinois continues its five-match road swing next weekend in Indianapolis when the Huskies will take on IUPUI (Friday), Indianapolis (Saturday) and Butler (Sunday).

O'FALLON, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team started a five-game road swing with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Saint Louis University Saturday at the St. Clair Tennis Club in O'Fallon, Ill.

 

NIU's Haley Dekkinga, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated SLU's Mia Elmore 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the last match of the day to give the Huskies the win. Northern Illinois also got two-set singles victories from No. 1 player Nelle Youel, who kept her undefeated record intact with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stephanie Hollis, and Mary Malkin, who defeated SLU's Madison Cook (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4 singles.

 

Northern Illinois started the match by winning the doubles point as Youel and Arantza De La Torre claimed an 8-3 win at No. 1 to remain undefeated in dual match play, and Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald defeated Natalia Yacaman and Maria Toro Moreno of Saint Louis, 8-5, at No. 3.

 

"This was a complete team effort," said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "We played some great doubles, then we really had to get tough in singles. SLU is a great team and they really know how to compete. It was an outstanding match. No rest for the weary, we have to be ready for SIUE [Sunday]."

 

Northern Illinois improved to 4-1 on the season while dropping SLU to 3-3. The Huskies face SIU Edwardsville Sunday at 2 p.m. in Edwardsville, Ill.

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (3-4) rolled past California of Pennsylvania (0-2) by a score of 6-1 on Sunday afternoon inside the Shadow Valley Tennis Club. UT rebounded nicely from a loss the previous day on its home courts to Cincinnati, as it begins the toughest stretch of the schedule which features 11 consecutive road games.

 

"We played a complete match from beginning to end today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Cal was tough and I'm proud of the way we came out and fought right from the start. We took definite steps forward today and I'm happy with our progress."

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold entered Sunday's matchup with the eighth-ranked Vulcans (DII) riding a three-match losing streak. The Rockets were also winless at No. 1 singles and junior Chrissy Coffman stepped up in her first match at the position to break the skid. Coffman defeated Lucie Sipkova in straight sets: 7-6(3) and 6-4.

 

Sophomore Pia Rygh was bumped down to the No. 2 spot, but adjusted extremely well to capture her first singles win of the season in straight sets.

 

The other three points in singles were earned by sophomore Lexy Pitt, freshman Emily Mazzola and senior Silvia Carvajal. 

 

The only match to play three sets occurred at the No. 3 position where freshman Katelyn Nguyen was unable to outlast Cal (PA).

 

Freshman Mackenzie Bowman played an exhibition pro-set, winning by a score of 8-2.

 

UT claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. The No. 1 freshman duo of Bowman and Mazzola were barely defeated in a tie-breaker, marking only the second loss in seven matches for the pair.

 

Toledo will travel to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, Feb. 15 and Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 16.

 

 

 

 

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo dropped its third-straight match to Cincinnati on Saturday by one point, 4-3. UT falls to 2-4 in dual play, but will get a chance to get back on the winning side tomorrow at home against California University of Pennsylvania.

 

"We really got off to a great start today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "I'm extremely happy with the improvements we've made on the doubles end. We are setting ourselves up for success, but just not closing with singles."

 

The Rockets started off Saturday's match by dominating the Bearcats in doubles. The No. 1 tandem of freshman Mackenzie Bowman and freshman Emily Mazzola defeated UC in a tie-breaker, 8-7(6). 

 

Freshman Katelyn Nguyen and senior Silvia Carvajal followed suit with a victory at No. 2 doubles, while junior Chrissy Coffman and sophomore Pia Rygh closed out the sweep in the third flight.

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold seemed to have the momentum heading into singles play, but UC responded with four victories to steal the match. 

 

Carvajal and sophomore Lexy Pitt each won their singles matchup. Pitt notched a straight-set victory in the fourth slot, while Carvajal earned the win at the No. 6 position in three sets.

 

Coffman came close to clinching the match for UT at No. 2 singles, but she came up short by losing 5-7 in a third set.

 

 

 

 

 

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team earned their fourth win in five matches to start the 2013 season, defeating the Green Bay Phoenix 6-1 on Saturday evening.   With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-1 on the season.  They will wrap the weekend with a match against Marquette on Monday.

 

The Broncos swept the doubles session against the Phoenix, winning all three matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  They followed with a dominant singles session, taking five of six matches from the Phoenix to seal the victory.

 

Despite a short turnaround after a day of travel, the Broncos rolled through the doubles session to take a 1-0 lead on the Phoenix.  Nini Sujashvili and Jill Pastunink took the No. 1 doubles match over Amanda Timm and Rebecca Nelson 8-2, and Maggie Remynse and Kelsey King posted an identical winning score in the No. 2 doubles match over Maria Anderson and Samantha Iwen.  The Broncos completed the sweep with a win in the No. 3 doubles match, with Kathleen Hawkins and Hailey Shanahan downing Stephanie Londre and Eleanor O'Brien 8-3.

 

Five Broncos would earn their second wins of the day in the singles session, as WMU took five of the six singles matches to set the final score in the win.  Sujashvili and Shanahan had perhaps the most dominant victories, winning the Nos. 1 and 6 matches, respectively, by 6-0, 6-0 scores, with Sujashvili defeating Timm and Shanahan beating O'Brien.  King made short work of Iwen in the No. 5 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-1, and Hawkins defeated Anderson 6-2, 6-3.  The hardest fought victory of the day belonged to Remynse, who faced a tough second set from Nelson but managed a 6-2,  7-5 win.
