MAC Men's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep in its double header Saturday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  The Cardinals defeated Eastern Illinois in the afternoon match and then closed out the night with a victory over Dayton.

 

With the win the Cardinals improve their overall record to 3-2 on the season.  Eastern Illinois would fall to 0-1 overall while Dayton is now 1-1 on the season.

 

The Cardinals opened the day of competition with a 7-0 victory over Eastern Illinois.  Ball State took the early 1-0 edge over Eastern Illinois after Dalton Albertin paired up with teammate Ray Leonard to earn the 8-6 victory over Michael Sperry and Warren Race at No. 1 doubles.  At the No. 2 spot Alexandre Brym alongside Imanol Arconada defeated Kevin Bauman and Robert Skolik by a score of 8-3.

 

Ball State claimed all six singles wins all in straight sets.  Albertin did not lose a game to his opponent after beating EIU's Race 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot.

 

After their first match, Ball State also swept Dayton winning 7-0 in the night cap.  The Cardinals took the doubles point as Albertin and Leonard won their second doubles match on the day at the No. 1 slot.  The No. 3 doubles tandem of Patrick Elliott and Austin Sansone were also victorious as they defeated Colin Bemier and Josh Malyon, 8-3.

 

The Cardinal would take down the Flyers in singles action winning all six matches.  

 

The Ball State men's tennis team will be back in action when it plays its third Big Ten opponent of the season Sunday, Feb. 3 at Indiana.  First serve is at 3:30 p.m.

 

 

 

MUNCIE, Ind.- The Ball State men's tennis team shutout the Detroit Titans, 7-0, Friday night at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  With the win the Cardinals improve to 1-2 on the season while the Titans fall to 0-5.

 

For the second straight match Ball State started off early winning the doubles point over UDM.  The Cardinal twosome of Cliff Morrison and Patrick Elliott took down Larry Brown and Chris Cheung by a score of 8-0 at the No. 2 spot.  At No. 3 doubles, Alexandre Brym alongside teammate Imanol Arconada managed an 8-5 victory over Jay Joshi and Rafael Orantes.

 

In singles action, Austin Sansone did not lose a game to Brown winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.  Ray Leonard, Dalton Albertin, Brym, Arconada and Austin Smith all won their respective matches in straight sets.

 

 

 

 

VERONA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team scored a 6-1 victory over Bryant University on Saturday afternoon at Turning Stone Casino to complete an opening weekend sweep as the Bulls, the 2012 Mid-American Conference regular season champions, start the spring season with a 2-0 record.

 

The Bulls won all six singles matches to claim the victory. Damien David recorded his fourth win of the spring season with three-set victory over Max Vogt in the number two singles match. The pair split tiebreakers in the opening two sets before David, the 2012 MAC Newcomer of the Year, rallied for a 6-1 win in the deciding set. David also teamed with Akhil Mehta at first doubles for an 8-6 win over Ernesto Arguello and Juan Gonzalez-Paz in UB's lone doubles triumph. David also won his singles and doubles matches on Friday over Colgate to complete the undefeated weekend.

 

The remaining UB singles wins all came in straight sets as Vusa Hove, Sebastian Ionescu, Pablo Alvarez, Ashwin Sharma and Jason Simon all picked up victories. With his win on Saturday, Hove moved past Fery Kasiman (1999-2003) for third place on UB's all-time singles win list with 65 and his 109 combined victories now ties him for sixth on the all-time list with Mike Proulx (1993-97).

 

"This weekend was a great test for us. We came out on Friday and played the most complete match I have ever been a part of for this program against Colgate," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "Today we were out-coached, but our guys stepped up and overcame a very good Bryant squad who was firing on all cylinders. Our goal as a coaching staff now is to tighten up our doubles play and continue to stress fast starts in both singles and doubles as we prepare to play Penn."

 

The Bulls travel to Philadelphia on Sunday, February 3 to take on the Ivy League's Quakers at 2:00 pm.

VERONA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team got off to a strong start to the spring schedule Friday night with a 7-0 whitewashing of Colgate at Turning Stone Casino.

 

The Bulls (1-0) jumped out to an early lead as the number one and two doubles teams scored easy victories to clinch the opening point. Damien David and Akhil Mehta teamed at number one to down Nick Laub and Harry Jewett, 8-2. Newcomers Ashwin Sharma and Sebastian Ionescu scored an 8-0 shutout of Bobby Berkowitz and Archer McFall in the number two match. Under new NCAA rules, the third doubles match was stopped once UB scored the clinching point.

 

UB swept Colgate in singles with all six matches won in straight sets. David, Ionescu and Mehta each won a set by 6-0 scores. Ionescu allowed just one game in earning his first singles victory for the Bulls in the number three match.

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Chicago State men's tennis fell 7-0 in a non-conference contest at Valparaiso on Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon.  The closest contest was at No. 1 singles where sophomore Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania) fell to Eric Honert 7-5, 6-3. Muresan and sophomore Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) fell 8-4 in No. 1 doubles to Honert and Lucas Waak.

  

Chicago State falls to 0-5. Valparaiso is now 3-0. The Cougars are next in action at Wright State on Saturday (Feb. 9)

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Chicago State men's tennis played their first Mid-American Conference match of the year on Friday (Jan. 25) evening against Northern Illinois. The Huskies defeated Chicago State 7-0.

  

In No. 1 singles sophomore Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania) played a close match with Dor Amir, falling 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 10-4. Sophomore Rashley Yeremia (Jakarta, Indonesia) played well in No. 4 singles before falling to Max Phillips 7-5, 5-7, 10-4.

  

“We played well,” Chicago State head coach Jack Barton said. “We have to win the doubles point and stay in the singles matches longer to put pressure on our opponents. But there will be a point we have to stop playing well and start winning matches. It is a belief and a mindset they have to adopt.”

  

Northern Illinois is now 1-1 (1-0 MAC). Chicago State is 0-4 (0-1 MAC). The Cougars are in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference contest at Valparaiso.

DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team swept its home-opener Friday night at Boylan Tennis Center to improve to 2-1 on the year with a 6-1 over Wisconsin Whitewater and a 7-0 triumph over Chicago State. The Huskies are 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference with the win over the Cougars.

 

The Huskies lone point to the Riverhawks was surrendered in doubles, with UWW taking Nos. 2 and 3. NIU's No. 1 pair of Dor Amir and Frederic Cadieux defeated Ben Shklyar and Mitch Osborne, 8-2. The team rallied back in singles with a clean sweep of singles play, led by Cadieux's 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Northern Illinois would claim straight set victories at Nos. 1 through 4.

 

In the evenings final affair, the Huskies took on the Cougars and made a clean sweep of them on the scoreboard. After NIU clinched the doubles point, the teams decided to end doubles and begin singles play. NIU's Simon Formont and Max Phillips finished deadlocked with Chicago State's Jean Paul Jones and Julian Chavez, 5-5, to close doubles. Northern Illinois would go on to sweep all of its singles matches, winning in two sets in four-of-six matches.

 

The Huskies will return to the court next Friday afternoon when it hosts Valparaiso and Dayton. Matches are slated to begin at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively, at Boylan Tennis Center.

COLUMBUS, OH - Toledo lost to No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday night by a final count of 4-0. Play was stopped inside the OSU Varsity Tennis Courts once the Buckeyes clinched the match with the fourth point.

 

"I think we're getting tougher," UT Head Coach Al Wermer said. "We have to improve in every spot and I know we will, but it's a process, and the more hard matches we endure, the more we learn to fight back together."

 

The Rockets fell behind early in singles competition and could not register a winning set against the Bucks. Sophomore Grant Adams played the closest match at the No. 3 slot, losing 5-7 to Connor Smith in the first set before being cut off during the second.

 

Sophomore Nicky Wong kept the No. 4 singles match competitive as well, playing Ille Van Engelen to the tune of 3-6, 2-3 before also being stopped in the second set.

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold were also swept in doubles play. UT's two seniors Bryant Dudzik and Terence Weigand were taken down at the No. 2 position, 4-8.

 

With the loss, Toledo's record drops to 5-3 overall. 

 

UT will travel to Youngstown State on Friday, Feb. 1 for a Noon matchup against the Penguins.

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (5-3) split a pair of matches on its homecourt Saturday. The Rockets dropped an early match to Binghamton in a close contest inside the Shadow Valley Tennis Club, 4-3. UT rebounded though with a 7-0 sweep of Northwestern Ohio in the nightcap at the Shadow Valley Club at Central. 

"Doubles is starting to look a lot better for us," UT Head Coach Al Wermer said. "We need to learn how to compete at every spot, on every court, in every match. The season is a process and we're not a final product yet. I know we're going to continue to improve through every weekend and I'm looking forward to that."

 

The Rockets didn't lose a doubles match on the day while keeping the same lineup in both matches. Sophomores Tomas Stillman and Nicky Wong held down the No. 1 position with an 8-6 win over Binghamton and narrowly passed by UNOH 8-7.

 

Seniors Bryant Dudzik and Terence Weigand filled the No. 2 spot and won by a score of 8-3 over UNOH. Their doubles match versus Binghamton went unfinished with the score tied at six. 

 

Transfer Francisco Stuardo picked up his first doubles victory with sophomore Grant Adams. The duo defeated Binghamton's No. 3 pair, 8-4, and then came back later on to defeat UNOH by the same margin.

 

In singles play, Binghamton took four matches over Toledo. Stuardo and Wong collected the only victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots by winning in straight sets - 6-4, 6-4.

 

Each Rocket won in straight sets over the UNOH lineup. Stillman, Adams and Weigand filled the top three spots, while sophomore Roberto Meza, junior Ben Brocker and Dudzik closed out the lineup.

 

UT improves to 5-3 on the season and will be right back in action on Sunday night in Columbus, OH. The Rockets are set to challenge No. 4 Ohio State at 7:00 p.m.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team split a pair of contests at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday, defeating IPFW 7-0 in the opener before falling in a 4-3 heartbreaker to UW-Green Bay in the nightcap. With the day's results, the Broncos' record moves to 3-2 on the season. 

 

The Broncos earned the win over the Mastodons thanks to an exciting doubles session, followed by a dominant performance in singles play against the Mastodons. Stephen Payne and Jim Beckwith opened doubles play with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 doubles match, but IPFW would counter with a tiebreaker victory in the No. 2 doubles match to even the score. The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker in the final match on the court, as the pairing of Nadin Indre and Ruben Greiner held off Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas 8-7 (5) to clinch the point.

 

Compared to the stressful doubles session, the singles play went rather quickly, as the Broncos controlled the tempo from the outset and quickly clinched the match win. Greinger beat Connor Andrews 6-3, 6-2 to give the Broncos a 2-0 edge, and Pablo Mora's No. 5 singles win over Freitas gave the Broncos a commanding 3-0 advantage. Andrew Cahn clinched the team victory for the Broncos with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gerard Guell in the No. 4 match.

Aaron Wong earned the win in the No. 3 singles match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Andres Cobos, Ross VanderPloeg dominated the second set in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Kang, and Michael Treis rounded out the scoring with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Martin Maudi in the No. 6 singles match.

 

The match against the Phoenix did not start out the way the Broncos had hoped, with Green Bay sweeping doubles play to start the match and take the opening point. Two Bronco pairings - VanderPloeg and Cahn, as well as Shideler and Stephen Payne - pushed their counterparts to the tiebreakers at 7-7, but neither was able to complete their respective comebacks.

 

Indre tied the team match up quickly in singles play, though, dominating Erik Finkenbrink 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Cahn followed up with a victory as well, controlling the temp against Howard Scott in the first set of the No. 6 singles match before holding on in the second to win 6-0, 7-6 (5). The Phoenix took the next two points to take a 3-2 lead, but Greiner came back from a set down to beat Rowan Isaaks 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match to tie the score. Pablo Mora battled with Leopold Islinger in the second set of the No. 5 singles match, trying to force a third set, but Islinger staved off Mora to win 6-4, 7-6 (5).
