No. 12 Central Michigan Defeats No. 7 Missouri, 17-16

 

 

 

 

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Seniors Christian Cullinan and Ben Bennett earned key major decisions as No. 12 Central Michigan handed No. 7 Missouri its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, 17-16.

 

A pair of underclassmen also came up with critical victories in the matchup of two of the elite programs in the country as redshirt freshman Lucas Smith and sophomore Mike Ottinger each claimed overtime matches versus ranked opponents.

 

Cullinan, ranked No. 9 in the country at 125 pounds, opened the dual for the Chippewas (9-3) with an 11-0 major decision over Dale Boyd. Cullinan went ahead on a takedown 49 seconds into the first period and was able to score back pointstwice in the match with a two-point near fall in the first and a three-point near fall in the second.

 

After No. 8 Scotti Sentes fell to No. 7 Nate McCormick, junior Scott Mattingly used a second period reversal and takedown to earn a 4-3 decision over Eric Wilson at 141. Again the Tigers (7-1-1) pulled within a point after an 8-2 loss by senior Donnie Corby to No. 16 Drake Houdashelt, but Smith and Ottinger swung the momentum back in the Chippewas' favor.

 

An even three periods sent Smith to overtime versus No. 20 Kyle Bradley where the redshirt freshman was able to score a reversal with just eight seconds left in the first tie breaker to earn a 6-5 win. Ottinger then kept the fireworks going for the Maroon and Gold, earning a takedown 39 seconds into sudden victory to upset No. 10 Zach Toal at 165 pounds, 6-4.

 

The Chippewas were able to secure the match behind a major decision by No. 2 Ben Bennett over No. 9 Mike Larson, 8-0. Bennett led 4-0 after two periods, butscored two back points and was awarded a penalty point while accumulating 3:38 of riding time to secure bonus points for CMU.

 

The bonus points proved crucial as redshirt freshman Jackson Lewis dropped a major decision to No. 12 Brent Haynes, 10-0, at 197 and senior Jarod Trice fell to the No. 1 heavyweight in the country in a close fought 3-1 decision.

 

Trice and Dom Bradley, who each took Olympics redshirts last season, were tied through regulation, 1-1, before Bradley earned an escape in the first tiebreaker and was awarded a caution point.

 

The Chippewas will be back in action next Sunday when they host rival Kent State inside McGuirk Arena at 2 p.m. Both the Chippewas and Golden Flashes enter the dual undefeated and the Maroon and Gold can secure at least a share of the Mid-American Conference regular season title with a win.

KENT, Ohio –Behind pins from Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio), Kent State remained unbeaten in front of its home crowd Sunday with a 29-10 victory over Clarion.  The Golden Flashes took 7-of-10 matches for the second time this weekend at the M.A.C Center.

 

“I thought our intensity dropped a little bit from Friday, but it was good enough to win,” Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.  “And I’m with the way our team has progressed this year.”

 

McGuire (19-12), a true freshman, improved to 5-2 in dual meets with his fourth pin of the year.  He started the second period from the bottom position, but rolled Joe Waltko directly to his back to end the match just 19 seconds into the period.

 

“Mack’s good at rolling around and scrambling,” Andrassy said.  “And their guy tried to ride him a little long in that scramble and Mack wound up sticking him on his back.”  

 

Kilgore (29-0) secured his patented cradle 2:09 into the first period against Justin Ortega.  The senior now has 13 pins on the year including one in each of his last seven dual meets.  Kilgore ran his winning streak to 48 and dual meet winning streak to 58.  With 45 career pins, he is just one shy of Kent State’s career leader Jim Swetter.

 

“I just go out there and wrestle and it just ends up as a pin a lot,” Kilgore said.  “Pins really don’t matter.  My goal is to be a national champion again.  I’m trying to do everything within my power to achieve that.”

 

Also collecting bonus points for the Flashes was senior Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) with a 21-5 technical fall following a relentless third period.  Newburg (27-4) started the third from the bottom position, but picked up four more takedowns, including one with 14 second s left.  

 

Senior Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio) was also dominant form the neutral position.  Mitcheff (21-9) scored five takedowns in an 11-4 win.

 

Sophomore Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) also claimed a comfortable 6-0 victory at 165.  Marsh (16-6) turned Nick Milano for a five-count with a bow and arrow in the second period.  The win erased Clarion’s 10-9 lead at the midway point.

 

Redshirt freshman Sam Wheeler (Copley, Ohio) then extended the lead with a 7-2 win from takedowns in each period.  

 

Senior Keith Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) put the finishing touches on Kent State’s weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over Phillip Catrucco.

 

In what is traditionally Kent State’s biggest dual of the season, the Golden Flashes (6-3, 2-0) visit Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan Sunday, Jan. 27.

 

“We’ve got to be able to get out from the bottom position against Central,” Andrassy said.  “On our feet we have to be ready for their re-attacks after our offensive attacks.”

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team took down its second top 25 team this week by beating #21 Northwestern, 21-13, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 48-0.

 

The Panthers faced SIUE at noon and followed up with the Northwestern dual. UNI won 14 matches before losing its first bout Sunday.

 

“That’s always big. It got the ball rolling to get a huge win against Northwestern,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “It was a good win for us. We had the momentum.”

 

UNI has outscored opponents 260-86 in duals. The Panthers were just coming off Friday’s 18-15 win against the Sooners of #13 Oklahoma. 

 

“We saw a different attitude. I was happy the way they responded,” Schwab said. “Sometimes it can be really tough to come back. We talked about consistency if they want to be All-Americans. 

 

Schwab said he didn’t see any fatigue in his wrestlers Sunday.

 

“We are glad to see how they are developing, especially confidence-wise. Every match counts. Friday was big, but today was just as huge.”

Senior Ryan Jauch got the Panthers’ momentum started right away by getting his fastest pin of the year. He stuck Tyler Gilleland of SIUE in 20 seconds. Jarrett Jensen also got his fastest pin of the year (24 seconds) when he beat Logan Taylor of SIUE.

 

Five Panthers recorded pins against SIUE:

UNI continued to get bonus points in the Northwestern dual. At 141 pounds, Levi Wolfensperger got a major decision (12-1) over Garrison White, and Ryan Loder beat Marcus Shrewsbury 19-3 to earn a technical fall. This was the second time Wolfensperger beat White. The two faced each other at the Midlands Championships as well. 

 

“I like how Loder attacked,” said Schwab. “Overall, it was a good team performance.” 

 

Blaize Cabell just recently entered the Panther lineup for duals. After getting a win Friday, he split his matches today, losing to #16 Alex Polizzi. 

 

“Blaize was able to put one guy away and had a great match early in the day. He lost to a ranked guy, and that’s what we talk about. It just shows we need to be consistent,” said Schwab. “We want to knock off some of those ranked guys, but he had a good weekend.”

 

The Panthers continue to use two wrestlers in their heavyweight position, using returning NCAA national qualifier and senior Blayne Beale and redshirt freshman Cody Krumwiede. 

 

“We are still up in the air and looking for something to separate themselves from each other,” said Schwab.”

 

The Panthers will close out their home dual season at 2 p.m. Sunday in the West Gym against #7 Missouri. 

 

“Sunday will be tough. We need to come out fighting and ready to win,” said Schwab. “I like where we are headed though, and we have a lot to build on. We’re excited to see the competition.”

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The No. 28-ranked Ohio University wrestling team fell to 0-2 on the weekend as it dropped a 24-9 decision Sunday afternoon to No. 20 Bloomsburg University inside the Nelson Fieldhouse. With the loss, Ohio fell to 4-5 on the year.

 

Ohio jumped out to the early lead at heavyweight thanks to a 7-2 victory by junior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) over Justin Grant. Johnson's victory was his seventh-consecutive win and his 13th triumph in the last 15 bouts. The win also improved Johnson's overall season mark to 24-7.

 

Bloomsburg fought back by winning the next two bouts to take its first lead of the match.

 

Freshman Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) claimed his second straight bout of the week to pull the Bobcats back within striking distance as he defeated BU's Matthew Rappo 6-1.

 

The Huskies would go on to win five of the next six bouts to secure the match. Ohio's lone victory in the final six matches came from redshirt freshman Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) as he posted his team-best 25th victory of the season, defeating BU's Christopher Smith, 2-0.

 

Ohio returns to action this Friday as it welcomes Buffalo to the Convocation Center. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
