MAC Wrestling Weekend Action

 

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo wrestling team will open its home schedule with the biggest name in college wrestling on Monday night, welcoming in the Iowa Hawkeyes for the fourth annual Takedown Cancer dual and fundraiser. The team hopes to not only make history on the mat, but also set new donation records to help the team Takedown Cancer and honor its former teammate and friend, Jeff Parker.

 

Raffles and auctions will start when fundraising portion of the event kicks off at 5 pm on Monday. Aside from numerous gift baskets and prizes generously donated by local companies and program supporters, there will be three main prizes drawn from the $10 raffle tickets that are currently on sale. The grand prize for the event is a pair of round-trip plane tickets proudly donated by Delta Airlines, to anywhere in the lower 48 states. Other major prizes includes a dinner party for 10 people at Ilio DiPaolo's restaurant in Blasdell, NY, and four tickets to an upcoming Buffalo Bills game on Dec. 30, with seats in the Jim Kelly Club.

 

Through the first three Takedown Cancer Fundraisers, the wrestling program has raised over $85,000 for the Jeff Parker Foundation and Carly's Club at Roswell Park. Added to the money raised for the two organizations, the team has also started a tradition of "adopting" a family that is in need and donating a portion of the proceeds to help alleviate their financial burdens.

 

With all that is happening off the mat, fans will also be treated to arguably the biggest dual in Buffalo wrestling's history. This will be the first-ever meeting with a legendary Iowa program that come into the week ranked as high as second in the nation by many media outlets. Two-time national champion Matt McDonough and 2011-12 national runner-up Derek St. John both come to Alumni Arena as the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at their weight classes (125 and 157, respectively). As a whole, the Hawkeyes offer six wrestlers who are ranked in the top eight nationally.

 

Iowa is currently 7-0 this season in dual meets, and will have two more duals this Sunday as part of the "Grapple at the Garden" series held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The team will face Hofstra at 10 am and then take on Bucknell right after.

 

The Bulls opened its dual season last Saturday at Central Michigan, losing 28-7 to the eleventh-ranked Chippewas. Six matches were decided by two points or less, with the Bulls losing five of the six, and neither the Chippewas or the Bulls would score more than four points in a single bout until the final three matches of the day. John-Martin Cannon won a 4-3 decision, and Angelo Malvestuto earned a 14-1 major decision in his first dual meet as a Bull.

 

A trio of UB wrestlers are in the national rankings this week. Mark Lewandowski is the highest ranked at number 22 in WrestlingReport.com's Top 33 rankings, while Malvestuto comes in at number 26 and Cannon comes in at number 31.  The dual is scheduled to start just after 7 pm Monday. 

 

 

 

 

 

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split 10 matches with Indiana University, 18-18, but the Hoosiers outscored the Eagles, 36-33, in match points and earned a 19-18 victory in front of a raucous crowd at Bowen Field House Sunday, Dec. 16.

 

“It is a tough way to lose,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Our guys rallied after being down late and we can continue to build off that effort as we move forward.”

 

Indiana won the tiebreak point based on the third criteria. The first was dual wins (5-5). The second was falls or technical falls (1-1). The third criteria, match points, favored the Hoosiers, 36-33. With the victory Indiana improves to 6-3 while the Eagles fall to 4-6.

 

Meeting for the first time in Ypsilanti since the 1977 campaign, redshirt junior Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) set the tone for the meet early in the 125 lbs. The No. 17 ranked Germaine posted a 5-0 decision over Zachary to give the early 3-0 edge for the Green and White.

 

IU bounced back as Quinton Murphy notched a 10-4 decision over Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) at 133 lbs. and Eric Roach edged Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids), 3-2, at 141 lbs..

 

Redshirt freshman Justin Melick (Fenton, Mich.-Fenton) knotted the dual back up with a 5-4 victory at 149 lb. However, Indiana's Taylor Walsh pinned Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) at 157 lbs., and it was followed up with a Ryan Leblanc 3-1 victory over Jacob Dorulla (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) at 174.

 

With EMU trailing 15-6, the Eagles regrouped with three consecutive victories to charge back to take a slim 18-15 edge heading into the final match of the afternoon. The rally included freshman Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) picking up a 3-1 sudden victory over Cheney Dale along with Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) finishing off a 10-3 decision over Lucas Sheridan.

 

At 197 lbs, Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.- Dearborn) notched his second pin of the year with 2:48 showing against Tarek Alaruri. The victory evened the Dearborn, Mich. natives record a 4-4 on the year and pushed EMU back in front on the scoreboard, 18-15.

 

Indiana's Adam Chalfant controlled the final bout of the afternoon winning by a score of 9-2 over Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) to deadlock the team score at 18-all.

 

Eastern Michigan will now take a few days off for the holidays before returning to action Dec. 29-30 at the annual Midlands Championships in Evansville, Ill.

COLUMBUS – All four of the night's close matches went in favor of No. 4 Ohio State Friday as Kent State dropped its first dual meet of the season 27-10 at St. John Arena. Fifth-year senior Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) won his 50th straight dual, while redshirt freshman Nick Carr (Fayette, Pa.) upset No. 10 Cam Tessari 10-3.

 

Carr improved to 13-4 on the season and gave the Golden Flashes their first win of the night at 149. 

 

"They got into a scramble in the first that lasted for about a minute," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.  "I think Tessari used a lot of gas during that.  And for the last five minutes it was all Nick.  He did the small things really well and that was about as good as I've seen him wrestle."

 

Improving to 16-0 on the season, Kilgore scored his fifth major decision of the season, 10-1, against No. 10 Andrew Campolattano. 

 

"You could tell Dustin was feeling it tonight," Andrassy said.  "He just smothered him."

 

Kent State's other victory came from redshirt freshman Sam Wheeler (Copley, Ohio) with a 4-1 decision over Craig Thomas.

 

"It wasn't even that close," Andrassy said of Wheeler's three-point margin.

 

Senior 184-pounder Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) took Kenny Courts in overtime, before falling 6-4.

 

"Casey looked nervous and a little hesitant for some reason," Andrassy said. 

 

Two matches earlier, sophomore Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) dropped a 2-1 decision at 165.  Senior Mallie Shuster (Newville, Pa.) also came up one point short, losing 3-2, against Josh Demas.

 

"I thought Casey, Caleb and Mallie all out-wrestled their guys," Andrassy said.  "But they can't just wait for things to come to them.

 

The first three matches (125-141) put the Flashes in a 15-0 hole, but Andrassy thought there were a lot of bright spots and looks forward to Kent State's Mid-American Conference opener Tuesday (Dec. 18) afternoon, hosting Northern Illinois.

 

"I feel like we've turned the corner since Vegas," Andrassy said.  "Our goal is roll through them (NIU) and really flex our muscle."

NEW YORK - The No. 7 Missouri Tigers Wrestling program traveled to Madison Square Garden Sunday for the inaugural Grapple at the Garden. Mizzou won both duals on the day to improve to a perfect 7-0, defeating No. 8 Cornell 22-12 and No. 25 Bloomsburg with a 22-9 final. The event featured fourteen universities, six of which are ranked in the top-25 in the nation.

 

The Tigers got off to a fast start against Cornell with wins in the first three weight classes of 125, 133 and 141 pounds. Junior Alan Waters, tabbed No. 2 in the country, remained perfect in 2012 with his second win against Cornell's Nahshon Garrett this year. Waters tallied a quick takedown and a three-point near fall en route to his fifteenth win on the year. Nathan McCormick added four team points after he took his match by major decision 11-3 over No. 8 Naryman Arujau.

 

Possibly the biggest win came at 141, when senior Nicholas Hucke defeated tenth-ranked Mike Nevinger by decision, 9-7. Hucke and Nevinger scrambled around for about 20 seconds before the Mizzou senior managed a takedown. Before Nevinger could escape, Hucke had added back points as well as three nearfall points. A reversal in the third period after Hucke started in the down position to start sealed the match. Hucke had lost his last two matches against unranked opponents coming in to the bout. Hucke's decision gave the Tigers a 10-0 lead over the Big Red after three matches.

 

Cornell closed the Mizzou lead to one point, 10-9, after three straight decisions at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. No. 20 Chris Villalonga took care of Mizzou's No. 16-ranked sophomore Drake Houdashelt 2-1 in overtime in a bout that didn't have much action to offer. Jesse Shanaman also squeaked out a victory over Kyle Bradley, 3-2. Missouri's Zach Toal (No. 10) rematched against Kyle Dake, the top-seeded 165-pounder in the nation. Dake continued his dominance with a 4-0 win over Toal. Cornell's three-time NCAA Champion was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for this year's event. Toal and Dake had previously faced off in Las Vegas on December 1, with Dake taking the match by major decision, 14-3. 

 

Senior Todd Porter ended Cornell's run with a 4-3 decision over Marshall Peppelman. After a shocking Steve Bosak 6-0 victory over Mizzou's Mike Larson (No. 6), the Tigers solidified their sixth win of the year after No. 10 Brent Haynes pinned Jace Bennett at 4:42. The huge win for Haynes leaves the senior five wins shy of hitting the 100-career wins milestone.

 Dom Bradley rounded out the win with a decision over Stryker Lane, 7-1. Coming in to 2012-13, many polls had Cornell and Mizzou as a tie for No. 7 in the nation.

 

Mizzou's also met up with the No. 25 Bloomsburg Huskies at Madison Square Garden. The Tigers took the dual 22-9 to improve to 7-0 after the two duals in The Big Apple. As has been the case every dual this year, Waters kicked off the dual with a win at 125 pounds. Unlike the majority of Waters' matches, only one point was scored in his bout with Sean Boylan. Waters improves to 16-0 after taking the 1-0 decision. McCormick also followed suit with a 5-2 decision over Nick Wilcox. The senior grappler took a 4-1 first period lead and held strong through the final four minutes.

 

At 141, Hucke dropped the match 7-5 to Matt Rappo after his big win earlier in the day against Nevinger of Cornell. Hucke fell behind 6-3 in the third, and cut the deficit to one with a reversal. An illegal move by the senior grappler gave Rappo a 7-5 lead which would eventually be the final.

 

Houdashelt and Kyle Bradley avenged themselves after tough one-point losses against Cornell. Houdashelt took shot after shot, especially in the third period against Simon Kitzis. Houdashelt won by major decision after accumulating six takedowns in the bout against the Huskies redshirt sophomore. Bradley took on Frank Hickman, ranked seventh in the nation by Intermat. Bradley started in the down position in the second period and after an escape, managed a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Hickman escaped late in the second, as well as in the third period, but Bradley held strong for a 3-2 victory.

 

Toal faced off against Josh Veltre Jr. at 165, and the No. 10 grappler couldn't get much going. Veltre rode three takedowns to a 7-4 decision, with Toal only scoring on escapes. The only other loss for the Tigers came at 197, where Bloomsburg's Richard Perry (No. 15) proved too much for sophomore Johnny Eblen and won by decision, 4-2.

 

Todd Porter improved to 2-0 in New York City after a 5-2 win over Chris Smith. With 22 seconds remaining, Porter added two points via the takedown to put the match away. Mike Larson also responded well after a tough loss earlier in the day with a 6-1 victory over Andre Petroski. Larson capitalized in the second period with a reversal followed by a two-point nearfall.

 

After Eblen's loss at 197, Dom Bradley once again finished off the dual for the Tigers. Bradley capitalized on many shots today after stressing more shots in practice after returning from the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, and defeated No. 15 Justin Grant. Bloomsburg's heavyweight did manage to take down Bradley at 20 seconds in to the second period. That was the first takedown Bradley has fallen victim to all year. The match ended with Bradley holding the advantage, 10-6.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa dominated Ellsworth Community College in its first home dual of the season, winning 46-9.

 

UNI recorded two technical falls and six pins, which all came in less than 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Ellsworth's points came from a forfeit in the 125-pound weight class and a match won by decision.

 

"Levi Wolfensperger started it, and then you get that steamroll going," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We look forward to doing that with every team that comes in here." 

 

Bart Reiter, at 149 pounds, competed for the first time this season for the Panthers. He won with a pin in 1:16. 

 

Each of the four returning NCAA national qualifiers won by pins, Wolfensperger at 133 pounds (9-2), David Bonin at 157 pounds (15-3), Ryan Loder at 184 pounds (11-1) and Blayne Beale at 285 pounds (6-2 record).

 

Jarrett Jensen was the sixth Panther to record a fall.  

 

Joey Lazor faced Tyler Lashbrook in the 141-pound weight class for the second time in less than a week. After winning a close match with Lashbrook at the UNI Open last Saturday, Lazor earned a technical fall to help fuel the Panthers' winning streak. 

 

Cody Caldwell also got a technical fall at 174 pounds.

 

UNI improves to 1-1 on the season for duals and will head to the Midlands tournament Dec. 29. 

 

"It's good to go home on a high note and be able to relax before we build onto that going into Midlands," Schwab said. "That tournament will give our guys a chance to make a mark nationally."

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University Wrestling team (3-3) will take part in its third tournament of the 2012-13 season on Sunday at 9 a.m. as it travels to the 2012 Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev.

 

The Bobcats will be one of 24 teams competing in the annual tournament that will be held in Reno Events Center.

 

Ohio enters the tournament in the hopes of building off of back-by-back dual victories over Eastern Michigan (Dec. 2) and Appalachian State (Dec. 8).

 

In the Bobcats last outing against the Appalachian State, redshirt juniors Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) each posted pins to give Ohio an early lead that it would not relinquish.

 

In addition, redshirt freshman Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) concluded the match with an 8-1 decision over ASU's Colin Hedash to improve to 13-0 on the year.
