MAC Wrestling Weekend Action

 

 

ITHACA, NY - Mark Lewandowski won the 165 pound title at the New York State Collegiate Championship Saturday, whileAndrew Schutt and Justin Heiserman placed second. As a team, the Bulls finished fourth out of 18 teams. Host Cornell won the team title.

 

Lewandowski was unstoppable all day long, recording four straight technical falls to earn a spot in the final at 165. The state title was the first in the senior's career, and his second straight title in his tournament season. He beat Binghamton's Adam Lepkowsky 16-1, John Fitzsimmons of NYU 15-0, Evan Connors of Ithaca College 15-0 and beat Jonathan Conroy 16-0 in just the first period of the semifinal round. He wasn't able to cap the day with a fifth tech fall, but still controlled from start to finish in a 12-6 win over Army's Paul Hancock.

 

Schutt was equally dominant, pinning his way to the finals of the 141-pound bracket before losing to Mike Nevinger of Cornell in the title bout. Mike is the older brother of current Bulls Chris Nevinger. Schutt pinned Matt Watson of the Merchant Marine Academy in just 32 seconds, and then put fifth seed Brian Bistis of Cortland on his back in a time of 3:28. To earn a title fight, he pinned Army's Connor Hanafee just as the first period came to a close.

 

In one of the team's best early season storylines, Heiserman continues to perform well in tournament play, going 3-1 with his only loss coming to top seed Paul Snyder of Hofstra. In the first round, he beat Chris Manna of Columbia 5-2, then won an injury default in the third period of his match against Brockport's Cole Tristram. In the semifinal, he eeked out a 1-0 win over Army's Stephen Snyder. Now in the past two tournaments, the sophomore is 6-2 with a third place finish and a second place finish.

 

A handful of Bulls placed in the deep tournament, including Max Soria at 125, Wally Maziarz at 157, Tony Lock at 184, and Angelo Malvestuto at 197.

 

Soria won his first round match before losing 7-5 in overtime. In the consolation bracket, he won three matches and secured fifth place with a 16-1 tech fall over Hunter Wood of Army. Maziarz was shocked by Sean Sercu of Rochester Institute of Technology in the very first round, getting pinned late in the first round. Rather than give up, he fought tough through the consolation bracket and earned a well-deserved third place finish. He won six straight matches, earning the team bonus points with a tech fall and a pin along the way, before beating Irvan Buck of Niagara County Community College 4-2 in the final.

 

Lock won his first round bout over NYU's Jakub Pawlowski before he fell to Cody Reed of Binghamton. He won two straight matches before losing to top-seeded Collin Wittmeyer of Army. In the fifth-place match, he won 13-4 over Columbia's Drew Rebling. Malvestuto also finished fifth, losing only to a pair of Cornell wrestlers in the tournament. He won three straight matches to make the 197 pound semifinal round, but lost to eventual champion Jace Bennett. He then lost again to Cornell's William George in sudden-victory overtime, 3-1, but beat Army's Bryce Barnes in the fifth-place match.

 

The New York State Collegiate Tournament continues tomorrow with the 'B' tournament, featuring redshirts and unattached wrestlers from New York schools. The team will take a break after the weekend for Thanksgiving, but will return on Dec. 2 for the Nittany Lion Open at Penn State.

 

 

 

 

CLARION, Pa. — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped its first road test of the 2012-13 season Sunday afternoon, Nov. 18, to Clarion University, 21-10. After redshirt junior No. 23 Jared Germaine's major decision in the opening match, the Eagles (0-2) won just two more matches against the Golden Eagles (1-1) the rest of the way.

 

Head Coach Derek DelPorto's squad remained without a pair of starters for a second straight day as Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.) and Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.) are still sidelined with injuries.

 

Germaine started the afternoon off on a positive note when he recorded a 12-3 major decision over Tyler Fraley at 125 lbs. to give the Eagles a quick 4-0 lead. The Saginaw, Mich. native improved to 2-0 in regular-season tussles after a win Friday against Michigan State.

 

Clarion then rattled off four straight decisions to take a 15-3 lead halfway through the contest. Joe Waltko held off scrappy redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto, 6-4, at 133 lbs., while John Matacic did the same to Seth Shaner at 141 lbs., 6-3, and Tyler Bedelyon to redshirt freshman Justin Melick at 149 lbs., 7-3.

 

Redshirt senior No. 24 Aaron Sulzer was then upset for a second straight match when he was bested, 5-0, by James Fleming. During Sulzer's bout, EMU was penalized one team point for a bench infraction.  

 

The Green and White won two of its next three matches as redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla outlasted Nick Milano, 3-2, at 165 lbs. The victory was Dorulla's first-career dual-meet win. At 184 lbs., redshirt junior Phillip Joseph cruised to an 18-5 major decision over Steven Cressley to keep EMU within striking distance, 18-10.

 

But Clarion's Justin Ortega sealed the victory for his squad when he managed a 6-4 overtime decision against redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah at 197 lbs. The Golden Eagles also took the heavyweight bout to earn the 21-10 win.

 

EMU is back in action Saturday, Nov. 24, when it faces a trio of opponents at the NDSU Duals in Fargo, N.D. The Eagles take on North Dakota State at 10 a.m., No. 1 Minnesota at noon and Campbell at 2 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -  Behind four individual champions, Kent State won the Navy Classic Saturday  at Wesley Brown Field House .  The Golden Flashes finished first of nine teams with 115.5 points, just ahead of host Navy with 109.5.  Fifth year seniors Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) and Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) remained unbeaten and were joined on the top of the podium by Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) and Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio).

 

For Marsh (165), it was his first competition of the season coming off an injury.  The sophomore went 4-0 with a major decision and defeated Navy’s Jacob Schalles 9-5 in the finals.

 

Kilgore (197) pinned all three of his opponents, including a first period fall against second-seeded Paul Rands of Navy.  

 

Newburg (184) went 4-0 with a pin and two major decisions.  He moved to 12-0 on the season with a 5-3 victory over Navy’s Mason Bailey.

Mitcheff earned his first title of the season, going 4-0 with two major decisions.  It was an all Kent State final at 125 as Mitcheff edged freshman Alfredo Gray (Wadsworth, Ohio) 6-5.

 

Redshirt freshman Nick Carr (South Fayette, Pa./South Fayette) made another finals appearance at 149, where he was topped by Navy’s Zach Basich 4-3.  Carr went 3-1 on the day with a pin and a major decision.

 

Redshirt freshmen Sam Wheeler (Copley, Ohio) also went 3-1 in second place finish.  After three comfortable victories, including a technical fall, Wheeler dropped the 174-pound final bout to Ohio’s Cody Walters 7-4.   

 

Fifth-year seniors Mallie Shuster (Newville, Pa.) and sophomore Andy Candiello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each took fourth places.  Redshirt freshman Kyle Bauer (Wheeling, W. Va.) grabbed a fifth place, while Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.) finished sixth in Marsh’s 165-pound bracket.

 

Shuster (157) went 4-2 with two pins and two major decisions.  Bauer (133) was 4-2 with a pin and two major decisions.  Buckwalter also went 4-2 with two major decisions.

 

The Golden Flashes take next weekend off from competition, before heading to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. 

 

 

 

 

DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois wrestling team ended their November homestand Saturday by taking two of three duals at the NIU Duals.

 

The Huskies defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph, 57-0, and Loras, 41-0. Yet, they could not knock off No. 23 Purdue in the finale, falling 37-0 to the Boilermakers.

 

Round One: Huskies Crush Crimson Wave, 57-0

 

The Huskies began their day with an easy win over Calumet College of St. Joseph, 57-0. With the Crimson Wave already shorthanded, things got better for the Huskies when only one CCSJ wrestler passed their skin test.

 

In the lone match, Thorian Twyner handily defeated Anthony Hawkins at 133, 5-0. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt freshman scored a quick escape followed by a takedown 30 seconds later. Twyner would clinch the match in the third with a penalty point against Hawkins and the riding time point.

 

“That kid is the best wrestler on their team,” said head coach Ryan Ludwig. “Thorian battled a bit of a slow start, got his motor running and ended up winning a solid match. We were happy about that.”

 

The 57-point victory was the most points scored by NIU since Feb. 12, 2011, when they Huskies defeated the Knox Prairie Fire, 57-0, in Edwardsville, Ill.

Round Two: NIU Shut Out Loras, 41-0

 

The Huskies earned their fifth win of the season with a 41-0 shellacking of the Loras Duhawks.

 

“We lived up to what we expected in that match,” Ludwig said. “I have a ton of respect for Loras and that conference, wrestling with very tough and scrappy kids. We talked about going out there and getting right after our attacks and our shots and that’s what we did. We were pleased.”

 

Much like last weekend at the Huskie Duals, Derek Elmore got NIU a big pin to start things, felling Stephen Kettner just over a minute into the match to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead. The pin was Elmore’s seventh of the season.

 

Thorian Twyner and Tyler Argue each got decisions to put Northern up 12-0. Twyner defeated Nick Steger by a narrow 4-3 margin, while Argue earned an 8-6 decision against Evan Weaver.

 

However, the Huskies did not take complete control of the match until Rob Jillard and Andrew Morse notched back-to-back technical falls. After leading 9-1 through two periods, Jillard exploded for seven points in the third to get a 16-1 tech over Dave Skrzypiec. Meanwhile, Morse completely outdueled Chris Lewis at 157 for a 15-0 win.

 

With the final result all but decided, Dan Burk and Matt Mougin both scored hard-fought decisions to clinch the win for the Huskies. Despite giving up an early takedown, Burk fought back for an 8-4 decision at 165 pounds. Additionally, Mougin scored a 13-8 win at 174, putting NIU up, 28-0.

 

Bryan Loughlin would get a win by forfeit at 184 for another six Huskie points and Shawn Scott earned a 10-1 major decision over Malcolm Watson.

 

The match, though, did not end without some drama. At heavyweight, Jared Torrence and James Buss battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation. After both exchanged escape points in the first overtime, Torrence took control of the match by holding Buss down for the first part of the second overtime. The Huskie heavyweight then clinched the win with an escape and takedown for a 5-2 win.

Round Three: Northern Illinois Falls to No. 23 Purdue, 37-0

 

Northern Illinois closed out the day with a 37-0 defeat at the hands of the 23rd-ranked Purdue Boilermakers. Despite getting bonus points in only three matches, the Boilermakers still swept the Huskies, marking the first shut out of NIU in two years.

 

“Purdue came out with a lot of hustle and put us on our heels in most cases,” Ludwig said. “We need to work on that. Our guys are not pleased and will be working hard to make adjustments as we take back to our training.”

 

The Huskies got off to a good start on the mat when Derek Elmore faced #18 Camden Eppert at 125. Elmore drew first blood in the match with a first period takedown of the nationally-ranked Eppert. However, a reversal to close out the first and another takedown in the second sent the Huskie sophomore to a 4-2 loss.

 

From there, things did not improve. Thorian Twyner dropped the 133 match to Danny Sabatello, 10-5. At 141, Brandon Nelson pinned Ethan Davis in 24 seconds. However, after the mat was slapped, Davis still laid on the ground from injury before being carried off by trainers.

 

Ivan Lopouchanski – the 14th-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds – and Rob Jillard dueled in a tightly-contested match as NIU looked to stem the Boilermaker tide. Yet, Lopouchanski defeated Jillard by a 7-3 decision.

 

Andrew Morse also put up a valiant effort at 157. Despite falling behind early, Morse battled back before falling 17-11.

 

After Dan Burk lost by a 20-7 major decision, Matt Mougin faced a similar fate at 174 as Morse did two matches prior. Despite falling behind in the first period, Mougin got within two in the third period. However, he was unable to get the equalizer and lost 8-5 to Chad Welch.

 

Bryan Loughlin lost via pin at 5:36 to Patrick Kissel in the 184 match. Shawn Scott battled hard with #18 Braden Atwood at 197, but lost 11-4.

 

In the heavyweight match, Jared Torrence could not avoid the NIU shutout and lost in a 2-1 overtime decision to Alex White.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Redshirt freshman Cody Walters won the 174 pound weight class to pace the Ohio University wrestling team to a fourth-place finish (64.5 points) at the 2012 Navy Classic Saturday afternoon inside Wesley Brown Fieldhouse.

 

Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) won his weight class for the second-consecutive week after he went a perfect 4-0. He earned a spot in the championship match after he defeated Navy's William Miller. In the championship match, Walters defeated Kent State's Sam Wheeler 7-4.

 

Walters was not the only Bobcat to have success at 174 pounds as redshirt sophomore Michael Duckworth (Liberty, Ind.) finished fifth with a 4-2 record.

 

Redshirt junior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) also posted a strong outing as he took runner-up honors at 285. Johnson opened the bracket by winning his first three matches to earn a spot in the championship match. In the championship bout, the returning All-American fell 7-6 to The Citadel's Odie Delaney.

 

Redshirt junior Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) posted a 4-1 mark and took third at 184. Garringer moved into the consolation bracket after he dropped a 6-2 decision to Navy's Michael Bailey. He would respond by winning his next two bouts.

 

Redshirt freshman Cody Rodgers (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) also posted a strong outing as he placed fifth.

 

Redshirt sophomore Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Phil Wellington both placed fourth at 165 and 197, respectively.

 

Ohio returns to action on Dec. 1 as it welcomes Central Michigan to the Convocation Center for its first home match of the season. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. 

 

 

 

 

 

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. - The Missouri Wrestling team took to the mats on Saturday at the Joe Parisi Open and made some noise against some of the top teams in the nation. In an open that featured six Division I-schools and 28 universities, the Tiger grapplers found their way into nine of the 10 finals matches. A total of 12 wrestlers placed in their brackets, with five taking first.

 

No. 4-ranked Alan Waters remained undefeated on the season by winning his five matches. Waters flew through his first three rounds, pinning his way through each of them. The sophomore accumulated three wins-by-fall in a total of four minutes and 39 seconds. He then defeated fellow Mizzou teammate Boomer Boyd in the semifinal round by major decision, 14-3, to advance to the finals versus Oklahoma State's Jarrod Patterson. Waters and Patterson hung with each other until the third, when Waters broke away to a 7-2 victory and the 125-pound title.

 

The 133-pound championship was nearly a duplication of the 125-pound title. Senior Nathan McCormick went up against Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State, and once again the title match was decided in the third period. McCormick was down 3-2 with under a minute remaining, and the No. 8-ranked grappler took down Morrison for two points and the lead, which eventually would be the final score, 4-3.

 

At 141, the Tigers sent two wrestlers to the final match of the day. Senior Eric Wilson and redshirt freshman Trevor Jauch took to the mat after a long day of wrestling, and Jauch came out on top. Jauch is 11-0 on the year after winning the 141-pound bracket at the UCM open last Sunday. 

 

Mizzou also won in the 197-pound and heavyweight brackets. No. 5 Brent Haynes held a one-point lead until the final whistle for a 3-1 decision with riding time over Kyle Reid from McKendree University. Haynes took first in his bracket after five straight decisions. He is now 8-0 on the year. Dom Bradley also improves to 8-0 after three pins and two decisions. Bradley defeated Oklahoma's Austin Marsden 3-2 in a highly physical final bout.

 

Sophomore 149-wrestler Drake Houdashelt dropped his finals match against the No. 1-ranked Jordan Olivar from Oklahoma State. Senior Todd Porter and Junior Zach Toal also finished as runner-up in their brackets, both losing to Oklahoma State wrestlers. Of the 10 brackets, Mizzou won five, Oklahoma State won four, and Oklahoma won one at 184 pounds. The Tigers will face off against their former Big 12 rivals this season at the Hearnes Center, with the Cowboys on Friday, February 1st, and the Sooners on the 2nd.

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The University of Northern Iowa crowned seven champions at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. 

"Good starting point for our guys and the team," said head coach Doug Schwab. "I thought a lot of guys got better as the day went on. You could see they were getting more confident. It was good to get some competition."

 

The tournament was divided into two divisions - Gold (for upperclassmen) and Maroon (for freshmen). 

 

In the Gold division:

 

125 pounds - Freshman Dylan Peters (3-0) won his second tournament winning with one pin in 1:39 and a major decision. 

 

"He is fun to watch, and it's fun to watch him get better," Schwab said of Peters.

 

133 pounds - Junior Joe Colon (2-0) and sophomore Levi Wolfensperger (2-0) met in the finals at 133. Colon started the tournament with a tech fall (20-4) and won by major decision 19-6 in his second bout over Philippe Walker of Minnesota State Moorhead. Wolfensperger pinned his first opponent in 3:57 and won by decision before facing Colon.

 

141 pounds - Junior Joey Lazor (4-0) took first, while freshman Adam Perrin (4-1) placed fifth. Lazor had two tech falls and one major decision win for the day. Perrin lost his first match, but he came back to win four straight matches. He recorded one pin and a major decision.

 

"Joey Lazor had a good tournament. He kept good control of his emotions by staying relaxed," said. Schwab. "He just kept attacking."

 

157 pounds - Senior David Bonin (3-1) placed second, recording one tech fall. 

 

"David Bonin will get better each week," said Schwab. "This was fuel for the next matchup."

 

165 pounds - Redshirt freshman Jarrett Jensen (3-0) won with two major decisions and a pin in 1:23. Riley Banach (2-1) placed third. 

 

174 pounds - Redshirt freshman Cody Caldwell (3-0) pinned Sebastian Gardner of Concordia Moorhead in 1:23 in the finals to win his weight class.

 

"Cody was one of those guys who kept getting better as the day went on. You could tell he came into finals more confident," said Schwab. "He took shots right away." 

 

197 pounds - Redshirt freshman A.J. McBroom (2-1) took third and recorded one pin in 3:18. 

 

285 pounds - Redshirt freshman Cody Krumweide (2-1) was beat out in the finals 2-1 to place second. He started the day with a major decision.

 

In the Maroon division:

 

133 pounds - Tyler Willers (3-2) was sixth and had one pin at 1:39 and one major decision for the day. 

 

141 pounds - Gunnar Wolfensperger (4-0) got two pins to win his weight class. The first was in 1:41, and the second was in 3:45. Tyler Patten (4-1) placed fifth and also recorded one pin in the tournament. 

 

"We are looking to redshirt Gunnar Wolfensperger, but it's exciting to see what he will develop into," said Schwab. 

 

157 pounds - Zach Witte (2-0) and Curt Maas (2-0) faced each other in the finals.
