Four More Teams Tip-Off Their Season Saturday

Akron (0-0, 0-0 MAC) vs. Hiram (0-0, 0-0 NCAC)
12 PM ET • Series tied 1-1
• The Zips played their lone exhibition contest a week ago, defeating Malone 85-54 at Rhodes Arena. Akron averaged 47.1 percent from the field (40.9 percent from 3-point range).  UA is 10-28 all time in season openers and 5-10 when it opens at home.  Akron returns six letterwinners that played quality minutes last season from a team that finished 14-18 overall and 7-9 in MAC play, en route to their third consecutive trip to Cleveland for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The sixth-seeded Zips bowed out of the tournament in the second round with a one-point loss to No. 7 Northern Illinois, 61-60.

• Saturday’s game officially begins the Jennifer Roos Era at BGSU ... Roos was hired as the Falcons’ head coach on the evening of April 16, and was introduced at a press conference the following day.  The Falcons scored early and often in the team’s lone exhibition, rolling along to a 105-39 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Stroh Center ... senior Allison Papenfuss scored 29 points in just 24 minutes, pacing four double-figure scorers for the Brown and Orange ... Papenfuss also had eight rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals ... BG led by a 55-14 score at the half, with first-half runs of 16-0 and 19-0.
 
Western Michigan (0-0, 0-0 MAC) vs. American (0-0, 0-0 Pat.)
2PM ET • Western Michigan leads 2-1
• Western Michigan kicks off its 2012-13 campaign today, hosting defending regular-season Patriot League champion American. The Broncos have a total of 12 home games this year and 29 contests total. WMU owned an 8-22 overall, 5-11 MAC record last year, while American was 23-8, 14-0 in the Patriot League.  Western Michigan is under the direction of first-year head coach Shane Clipfell. Clipfell was formerly an assistant coach at Michigan State the last five seasons under Suzy Merchant, and spent nine seasons with Merchant at Mid-American Conference counterpart Eastern Michigan. Clipfell has also coached at Glen Oaks Community College and Colon High School.

• Kent State (0-0) begins its 38th season of basketball on Saturday as the Golden Flashes travel to Massachusetts (0-0) for a 2:00 pm contest.  The 2012-13 team will feature a new face on the sidelines. Head Coach Danielle O’Banion takes over the Kent State program after spending the previous four years on the coaching staff at the University of Memphis, the last two as associate head coach.
