Complete Preseason Mid-Major Top-25 Poll
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Ohio University and University of Akron men's basketball teams have earned spots in the preseason CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. The Bobcats will be ranked No. 5 to start the season, while the Zips check in at No. 15 in the opening poll. Kent State was also listed in this years preseason poll and are receiving four votes.
Ohio first-year Head Coach Jim Christian will welcome back 12 letterwinners, including five starters to a team that won the 2012 FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament before making a magical run to the NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16". Ohio’s 48 wins over the past two seasons are its most since the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns and the 70 wins over the last three years are the most in program history. Christian enters his first season at Ohio after coaching at Kent State and most recently, TCU. The new head coach of the Bobcats owns the highest-winning percentage (.704) in Mid-American Conference history, He took the Golden Flashes to the postseason five times in six years and two MAC championships in the process.
Akron enters the 2012-13 season as the defending MAC Regular Season champions for the first time since joining the league in 1992 and advanced to a league-record sixth-straight MAC Tournament title game (second-longest active streak in the nation). UA appeared in the NIT for the fifth time in program history, the third under Dambrot, and played in the postseason for the fifth-straight season, falling 76-74 at Northwestern on March 13.
UA is just one of seven teams to have posted at least 22 victories in each of the last seven seasons, joined by the likes of Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Utah State. Over the last eight seasons, all under Dambrot, the Zips have posted 184 victories, tied for 31st nationally among all Division I teams.
The Zips open up their season this Friday at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Coastal Carolina, while the Bobcats host Portland on Saturday at 2 p.m.
