AKRON, Ohio – Chad Barson and Reinaldo Brenes were named to National Teams of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News Monday after helping the No. 2 University of Akron men's soccer team to shutout wins at Ohio State and Hartwick.
Barson played all 90 minutes at center back in each contest as the Zips (13-1-2, 6-0-0 Mid-American Conference) recorded their 11th and 12th shutouts this fall. Additionally, Barson, a senior team captain, found the back of the net for the second time in 2012 against the Hawks by flicking home a header from close range following a Dillon Serna free kick.
Brenes netted the game-winner at Ohio State then helped fan the fire at Hartwick with his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 51st minute.
After a scoreless first half, Brenes finished a rebounded shot by Wil Trapp to sink the Buckeyes in the match's 52nd minute. Then at Hartwick, the junior fueled the Zips' 4-0 rout with his team-leading 10th goal of the season early in the second half. Brenes, who has scored a goal in each of the Zips' last three matches and found the back of the net at least one time in seven of the last eight, received a well-struck corner kick from Serna near the back post and one-timed it into the corner of the net.
Akron, which secured its eighth-consecutive MAC regular season championship Saturday, is unbeaten in its last 11 matches and has won 10 straight contests. UA will play its final regular-season road match Wednesday afternoon at Michigan State. The Zips and Spartans will kick off at 3 p.m. (ET) at DeMartin Stadium.
As the No. 1 seed, Akron will host the MAC Tournament from Nov. 9-11 at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
