AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron juniors Reinaldo Brenes and Eric Stevenson were each named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week Monday after helping the Zips to a 5-0 win over Florida Atlantic last Friday.
Akron (7-1-2, 3-0-0 Mid-American Conference) picked up its fourth straight win and fifth consecutive shutout against the Owls in commanding fashion. Brenes and Stevenson each scored two goals while assisting another to fuel the rout.
It was the second straight mulitple-goal game for Brenes, who recorded his first career hat trick against Buffalo in the Zips' previous match. For Stevenson, it was the junior's first multiple-goal performance in an Akron uniform.
With the victory, UA extended its league unbeaten streak to 41 matches (38-0-3), which represents the longest active streak in the nation and the third-longest run in NCAA history. It was also the Zips' seventh shutout in 10 matches. Akron has not allowed a goal in its last 391 minutes of play.
As a result, UA moved up one spot to No. 3 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and up four spots to No. 6 in the College Soccer News poll, which were both released Monday. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announces their national rankings every Tuesday afternoon.
After a brief two-game homestand, the Zips will jump back on the road for their next two matches. Akron will play at Penn State Wednesday (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m. and at Northern Illinois Saturday (Oct. 13) at 1 p.m. Both start times are ET.
