It's finally here. College Football Season has arrived! I'm not sure about the rest of you but I'm beyond excited for the 2012 MAC Football season. Each and every season there are new storylines that will unfold, outstanding performances by our student-athletes that will take place and some great games that will have us all on the edge of our seats. The drama will all begin to unfold tonight at 7 p.m. as five MAC Football games are set to kick-off (pretty pumped that all of tonight's games can be seen on ESPN3.com as well).
In a new social media initiative I will be be going to a game on each MAC campus throughtout the season (unfortunatley I couldn't schedule UMass in) as part of our MAC Football Social Media Road Tour. I will select three fans to join me on each campus during the year and will take them around and give them a "Gameday Experience". This includes going on the field for pre-game, tweeting live game updates from the press box and attending the post game press conference. The fans I choose will all be tweeting about their experience from our new @ExperienceMAC twitter account so make sure you give it a follow. It should be a really good time and hopefully it brings a new feel to our Fan Zone page on MAC-Sports.com.
With that, I have my credential and am off to Akron's InfoCision Stadium to watch the Zips take on the University of Central Florida Knights. I'm pretty pumped to be attending the first game of the "Bowden Ball" era at Akron. I got even more excited after watching the 2012 Akron Intro video -- check it out!
5:00 PM: I'm now on the University of Akron campus and Zips Football (@ZipsFB) is in the air. Tonight is Social Media Night here at InfoCision Stadium and the Twitter hashtag for tonight's game is #ZipsGameday. There are a total of six Akron fans (three picked courtesy of Akron Sports Information/three picked courtesy of the MAC Football Social Media Road Tour) in the press box this evening. The University of Akron was kind enough to provide t-shirts to all of it's Social Media Night Correspondents and gave them all front row seats in the press box -- a very nice touch! Also, check out tonight's Game Program -- everyone around here is ready for some "Bowden Ball"!!
6:00 PM: Time for dinner in the InfoCision Stadium Press Box. Tonight's menu: Subs from Penn Station, Hot Dogs, Homeade Meatballs, Chips, Fruit and Cookies. My rating: 8.4 out of 10. Anytime you give me my choice of deli meats/sandwiches and include some meatball action on the side you are going to get high marks. The cookie with the M&M's was a nice touch. Job well done Akron! Now it's time to go and meet my Social Media Tour Correspondents!
6:00 - 7:00 PM: Met my Social Media Correspondents @ThoughtsOfBAM, @tffffny & @LukeTheVIP (@Tffffny was the first to arrive) and went down to the field to watch pre-game warmups. The @ExperienceMAC team killed the coverage and were tweeting like crazy before today's game. Here are a few photos from when we were down on the field.
8:00 PM-10:00 PM:
Central Florida built a 35-0 halftime lead and the @ExperienceMAC team went down to take some photos of AK Rowdies
during the break. Today marked the first time that they sold beer
at InfoCision Stadium and it was a huge hit with the fans!
The second half was controlled by the Knights as they held on to defeat Akron, 56-14 Senior quarterback Dalton Williams, in his first game as a Zip, led the way offensively for Akron (0-1), completing 30-of-50 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Here's some highlights from tonight and what Akron Head Coach Terry Bowden had to say about the loss.
Win or lose it was a great first night on the MAC Football Social Road Tour! The Akron staff was extremely hospitable and I couldn't have picked three better people to be my social media correspondents for the night. I want to thank Tiffany (@tffffny), Luke (@LukeTheVIP) and Anthony (@ThoughtsOfBam) once again for everything they did tonight. The content they provided was outstanding and tomorrow I'll have blog postings/video interviews from each of them and what they thought of tonight's experience. Until then, keep supporting MAC Football! Goodnight Everybody!
