Western Michigan gets another crack at Illinois to start the season, and two weeks later travels to Minneapolis for a date with the Gophers. Connecticut visits to complete a nonleague schedule that is difficult - but also filled with opportunity.

And that could be a pivital game in the league race. The final game of the season, at home against surging Eastern Michigan, also could involve high stakes.

If Carder takes another step, cuts down on the gambling and finds some reliable receivers, and if the rush defense acn locate some stringiness, there isn't a game on the schedule that is out of reach.
