AKRON, Ohio – Seniors Scott Caldwell and Chad Barson from The University of Akron men's soccer team have been named to College Soccer News' 2012 Preseason All-America Team, the publication announced this week.
Caldwell, who was recently named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, earned first-team honors, while Barson was named to the third team. Both players will return as team captains in 2012.
After hitting the game-winning shot in the national championship match in 2010, Caldwell continued his success last fall with a breakout season. The midfielder from Braintree, Mass., reached career highs for goals (6) and assists (11) while helping to lead the Zips back to the NCAA's Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year.
Barson is the veteran anchor on one of the best defending teams in the nation. The center back from Lewis Center, Ohio, who has started every game of his college career, split national championship heroics with Caldwell by clearing a ball off the line in the closing seconds to preserve the 1-0 victory. As a unit, the Zips recorded 11 shutouts in 2011 and held opponents to one goal or fewer 19 times in 23 matches overall.
After earning preseason victories against Saint Louis (1-0) and Wright State (5-0) last week, Akron will officially open the regular season Friday night when Florida Gulf Coast comes to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1350 AM (WARF).
The first 3,000 fans through the gates will receive a free Akron Soccer poster.
Tickets for all 2012 contests start at $10 for General Admission, while Reserved Seats in the west bleachers are $15. The Single-Game Family Plan is $35 (General Admission seating). UA students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge.
