No MAC team has repeated as champ since Central Michigan's Dan Lefevour-led squads got it done in 2006-07. There's no reason NIU can't match the Chippews' feat, though it might not be fair to expect the Huskies to outscore opponents the way they did last year because they'll have a new quarterback, new running back and four new linemen.

This is where NIU's veteran defense must come to the fore. With 11 players who started at least seven games in either 2010 or 2011, there aren't many MAC teams with more experience.

Whenever Doeren thinks his Huskies are temped to rest on their laurels, he points to the season opener against Iowa at Soldier Field. He also hasn't been afraid to print out articles (both negative and positive) about other college teams and let his players know what their peers are doing.

"I say, 'This is what a champion does' or 'this is not what a champion does," Doeren said. "It's all part of the education process that there's only two ways to do it: The right way or the wrong way."
