Akron Picked in 2012 Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

Cleveland, OH- The Zips have done it again with a consecutive year named as the preseason Mid-American Conference favorites to win the regular season title. Akron posting a total of 62 votes may be looking to capture its eighth-consecutive MAC regular-season championship.  

Behind Akron with 53 votes was the MAC’s newest addition as an affiliate member - West Virginia University. Northern Illinois (51) was chosen third with only two votes less followed by Western Michigan, Hartwick, Bowling Green, Buffalo, and Florida Atlantic.

Despite being defeated by Western Michigan in the 2011 MAC Tournament semi-finals and not advancing to the championship game for the first time in 4 years, the Zips were still predicted to win it all this season. Akron posted a total of six out of eight votes by coaches to be the MAC Tournament champs.

The University of Akron men’s soccer team will look to return to the NCAA College Cup for the third time in four years this fall following another deep postseason run in 2011.

Returning eight of 11 starters, the Zips kick off the season at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field Friday, August 24 against Florida Gulf Coast at 7:30 p.m.
