DEKALB, Illinois –
Central Michigan chose the right time to hit their best team-score of the season with a 195.675, edging out Kent State with a 195.225, at the 2012 MAC Championships hosted by Northern Illinois.  Central Michigan was aided by first-place finishes in three individual events and the all-around.  For Central Michigan it is their 13th MAC Gymnastics Championship in school history, all coming with Jerry Reighard at the helm.  Western Michigan finished third, followed by host Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Ball State.

Meaghan McWhorter started things off for the Chippewas, recording a 9.900 on the vault to earn the MAC title in the event.  For Central Michigan, McWhorter’s title is the 10th in CMU history on the vault and first since 2010 when Chippewas placed two in a three-way championship tie.  Danielle Wishart of Bowling Green and Rachel Goldenberg of Kent State tied for second with a 9.875.

Julie Cotter of Ball State was the only gymnast that earned gold from somewhere other than Central Michigan.  Cotter put up a 9.875 to earn her first MAC Championship in the uneven bars and the fifth in Ball State history.  Caroline O’Brien of Western Michigan and Rachel Guida of Kent State tied for second with a 9.850 each.

The CMU duo of Taylor Noonan and Kristin Teubner each scored a 9.825 to tie for first in the balance beam.  It is the second-consecutive title in the event for Teuber.  Northern Illinois’ Megan Melendez, and Western Michigan’s Kelsey Turnquist tied for third with a 9.800.

Teubner claimed her second event title of the championships, as she scored a 9.925 on the floor exercise to earn her third title in the floor, and first outright.  Teubner’s 9.925 is the highest winning score in the floor exercise since 2004 when 9.950 took the title.  Teubner edged-out second place finisher Tanya Rachan of Northern Illinois who turned in a 9.900.  Taking third was Taylor Zondervan of Western Michigan and Danielle Wishart of Bowling Green with a 9.875.

Central Michigan gymnasts weren't done collecting hardware, as Brittany Petzold took the all-around title with a 39.150.  Kent State's Marie Case took second with a 39.025, and Western Michigan's Cepeda Carter took third with 38.975.

Central Michigan will now wait to see if they qualify for NCAA Regionals as they sit two spots outside of the coveted 36 spot.  Final rankings will be announced Monday.
