Northern Illinois senior Kim Davis provided a late, second-chance basket to propel the seventh-seeded Huskies over the sixth-seeded Akron Zips, 61-60, in the second round matchup of the MAC Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.

The first half of the contest went back and forth as there were seven ties and 10 lead changes. With 2 seconds left in the half, a quick steal and bucket gave the Huskies a 27-23 going into the locker room.

The Huskies increased their lead to start the second half, taking a 44-35 lead. However, a long deuce by Jasmine Mushington and a three-pointer by Carly Young cut the lead to 44-40 with 12:02 remaining in the contest.  Throughout the next seven minutes, the Zips continued to cut into the Huskies’ lead as Hanna Luburgh added a three to make the score 53-52. With 5:01 remaining, two free throws by Ti’eshia Stubbs gave Akron a 54-53 lead, their first lead of the second half.  Kim Davis gave the Huskies the lead back with two free throws of her won with 3:49 to play.

Sina King’s three with 1:56 left gave the lead to Akron, but Kim Davis responded for Northern Illinois at the foul line to tie the game at 57. Lead changes continued to be the common trend as Kacie Cassell drained a three from the top of the key with 1:20 remaining. Courtney Shelton cut Akron’s lead to one with 32.8 seconds remaining. The Huskies’ strategy to put the Zips on the line paid off as Akron missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the ball back to the Huskies. Following a missed jumper by Shelton, Davis grabbed the offensive rebound and sent the ball through the hoop with 6.4 seconds remaining.  Akron’s last-second shot attempt was unsuccessful, giving Northern Illinois the victory.

Courtney Shelton and Amanda Corral each led the way with 14 points as four Huskies scored in double figures. Jasmine Mushington came off the bench for 17 points to lead all scorers for the Zips in the loss.

With the victory, Northern Illinois advances to the Quarterfinals to face the Toledo Rockets Thursday back at Quicken Loans Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 2:30 pm.
