Toledo's Pearson Named MAC’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week

TOLEDO, OH - Sophomore guard Rian Pearson has been named Mid-American Conference’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today. Pearson averaged 22.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg in addition to shooting an impressive 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field in two contests, while playing a team-high 34.5 minutes per game.  

A individualized studies major with a 3.208 grade-point average, Pearson tallied his fifth double-double of the season in a 63-61 win over Miami with a team-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.  In Saturday’s contest vs. Kent State, Pearson produced his seventh 20-point outing of the year with 22 points and tied for the team rebounding lead with seven boards. Pearson also tied his career best with 10 field goals made in both contests.

The Raytown, MO native is the only player in the MAC to rank in the league’s Top 10 in points (17.0/3rd), rebounds (8.0 rpg/3rd) and steals (1.8 spg/5th) per game. Pearson also leads the conference in scoring in league play with 18.5 ppg and is second with 2.9 spg.

The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
