For Immediate Release—Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012
MAC Wrestler of the Week
Aaron Sulzer, Eastern Michigan—Junior, Cleveland, Ohio (Holy Name High School)
Eastern Michigan junior Aaron Sulzer led the Eagles to a 2-2 day at the Pitt Duals, on Jan. 7, winning all four of his matches (three by decision and one by major decision). Sulzer is now 14-4 on the season including open and dual competition. He beat Mike Burnett of Virgina Military Institute, 6-2, to help ensure a victory against the Keydets. He also toppled Donnie Tasser of Pitt, 3-2, CT Talevi of Davidson, 12-3, and Jake O'Hara of Columbia, 3-1.
Additional Nominees:
Mark Lewandowski, Buffalo—Junior, Depew, N.Y.
Buffalo junior Mark Lewandowski won both of his matches in the past week, beating #23 Matt Kaylor of Binghamton 3-2 and earning a major decision over Edinboro's Ethan Saylor, 11-0. The win over Saylor was Lewandowski's 70th career win, and his 23rd of the season.
Kevin Fanta, Northern Illinois—Sophomore, Lake Zurich, Ill. (Lake Zurich High School)
Northern Illinois sophomore Kevin Fanta posted a huge victory Sunday against Lock Haven's nationally-ranked Matt Bonson that allowed the Huskies to capture a 22-16 victory over the Bald Eagles. With Bonson leading 1-0 after two periods and NIU only leading by three in the team score, Fanta tied the match up early in the third period with an escape. Bonson, though, kept Fanta at bay in order to protect the one minute advantage he had in riding time. Yet, Fanta finally brought Lock Haven’s nationally-ranked wrestler down in the final minute to take a 3-1 lead, then scored two near fall points to secure the match and the Huskie victory.
