Cleveland, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference has announced today that the upcoming men's basketball game between Ohio and Akron has been selected for the conference's national January basketball television package on ESPNU.
An East Division battle will take place as Head Coach John Groce and the Bobcats will look to go into James A. Rhodes Arena and get a win against Akron Head Coach Keith Dambrot and the Zips on Saturday, January 14th at 4 p.m. ET
Off to its best start since 1940-41, Ohio (10-1) is led by junior guard D.J. Cooper. The Cousy Award candidate ranks 11th nationally in assists (6.6 apg), 19th in steals (2.5 spg) and against Portland earlier this season, recorded the first triple-double of his career. Cooper is one for four players in double figures for the Bobcats who are also enjoying solid starts from juniors Ivo Baltic, Walter Offutt and Reggie Keely. The ‘Cats swept Akron during the regular season last year and topped the Zips in the 2010 MAC Tournament final.
The Zips are 7-5 and are currently riding a four-game winning streak after posting four wins in seven days at Rhodes Arena. UA, led by junior center Zeke Marshall, have won 14-straight games at home, which is tied for the 16th-longest streak in the nation. Akron, taking time off to celebrate the holiday season, returns to action on Dec. 29 when it plays host to 2011 Final Four participant VCU at Rhodes Arena.
