YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team took down in-state rival Oakland University Wednesday evening, Aug. 31, in straight sets at the Convocation Center. The Eagles took the first set 27-25, followed up by a 25-15 second set, and a 26-24 final frame in their home opener.
EMU moved to 3-1 on the season, while Oakland fell to 2-2.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Green and White with 16 kills, while Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) added nine. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had a match high 33 assists for the Eagles and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) led the match with 24 digs.
Iaquaniello led the opening set with six kills and Baker added four of her own to help lead EMU to a 27-25 win in the frame. Mason led the set with 12 assists in the opening frame.
Mason added 11 more assists in the second set, while picking up three kills with a .600 attack percentage in the frame. Iaquaniello had a .571 attack percentage in the second frame with four kills. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) knocked home three kills of her own en route to a 25-15 win for the Eagles.
Iaquaniello added six more kills for the Eagles in the final frame, while Ashley Mason served up 10 more assists in the 26-24 third set win for EMU. Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) added three kills with a .273 attack percentage in the final frame.
The Eagles continue their 2011 campaign when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The Green and White open up the invite with a 10 a.m. match against the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday, Sept. 3.
