Philadelphia, Pa. -- The 2011 Bednarik Watch List was announced today and Kent State sophomore defensive tackle Roosevelt Nix was named to the prestigious list. As a freshman last year, Nix earned MAC Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors after leading the conference with 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.
A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Nix also received recognition last year being named to the Sporting News All-Freshman Team and was also named first-team Freshman All-American by Rivals.com.
Nix ranked sixth in the nation with his 20 tackles for loss and 11th in the country with 10 sacks. He also tied for fifth in the nation with four forced fumbles as part of a defense that stood second in the country in tackles for loss, fifth in rushing defense, 11th in sacks and 13th in total defense. Nix added 43 tackles, eight quarterback hurries and a pair of blocked kicks in his freshman campaign.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the nation's top defensive player since 1995. A former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, Chuck Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced October 31st and the three finalists will be unveiled November 21st. The winner of the 2011 Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on December 8th. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 2nd 2012.
