BANDON, Ore. -- Rising Kent State junior Kevin Miller secured a place in the Round of 32 at the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship following a 3&2 win over Penn State's Anthony Degol on Wednesday afternoon. Miller will now face Nick MacDonald at 9:00 a.m. (PST) on Thursday with the winner moving on to a match in the Round of 16 at 1:40 p.m. (PST).
Miller won seven of the 16 holes he played on Wednesday on the Bandon Trails course at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. He had a 64 on the scorecard with two holes left on the same course he opened stroke play with a 77 on Monday. One down through nine holes, he took over the match with Degol by making three straight pars to win the next three holes. The next three holes were tied before Miller secured the win with another par on the par 5, 530-yard 16th.
The 2011 First Team All-Mid-American Conference honoree earned his spot in the 64-man match play bracket with a two-over 73 at the Old Macdonald course on Tuesday making one birdie against a bogey and a double bogey. His 36-hole stroke play total of 150 (77-73) was good enough to place him tied for 46th among the 156 entrants.
Tied for 50th in stroke play, MacDonald, the 2010 New Hampshire State Amateur Champion won his opening round match 4&3 over Kyle Beversdorf of Plymouth, Minn.
Miller was one of three Kent State golfers in the stroke play field. Graduating senior Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario / Highland Secondary) shot rounds of 78-78 for a 156 while incoming freshman Nick Scott (Union, Ohio / Northmont) was unable to follow up his opening round 74 as he carded an 81 on Tuesday to finish with 155.
