YPSILANTI, Mich. - A pair of home runs and a stellar pitching performance led Miami to a 6-0 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 18-17 overall and 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 21-10 overall and 7-4 in the MAC.
All of Miami's scoring came in the top of the second inning. Jordan McElroy led off the frame with a solo home run over the right field wall, the first home run of her career. Kayla Ledbetter followed with a walk. Kathryn Russette doubled down the right field line to make it second and third with no out. Two batters later, Daniela Torres singled to right center to score Ledbetter. Kirstie Fehrenbach followed with a single through the right side that brought home Russette and made it 3-0. After a pitching change, Jenna McGivney hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 6-0 and complete the RedHawk scoring.
Meanwhile Jessica Simpson cruised throughout the game in earning her 16th victory and 10th shutout of the season. She allowed only two hits and a walk on the day, with only one batter reaching second base. Simpson struck out eight Eagle batters.
McGivney finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Torres was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Miami will complete its series with Eastern Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m.
