MAC Names Men's Tennis Postseason Awards

Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced the 2011 Men's Tennis Awards today, including the 2011 Player, Newcomer and Coach of the Year. 

Regular season champion Western Michigan was represented by senior Michael Calderone as the 2011 MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year.  A native of Grass Lake, Mich., Calderone finished the season with a 26-11 record in singles play and 12-4 in the No. 1 singles position.  In doubles play, Calderone finished with an 18-15 overall record and 12-12 in the No. 1 doubles position.

Northern Illinois freshman Axel Lagerlof was named the MAC Men's Tennis Newcomer of the Year.  A native of Malmo, Sweden, Lagerlaf finished his first season in the MAC with a 17-8 mark in singles play, and a 9-14 record in doubles.

Men's Tennis Tournament Champion Ball State was recognized as head coach Bill Richards was named 2011 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.  Richards led the Cardinals as the No. 4 seed in the tournament as Ball State defeated No. 5 seed Northern Illinois, 4-0, No. 1 seed Western Michigan, 4-3, and No. 2 seed Toledo, 4-1.  The MAC Men's Tennis Tournament title was the first for Ball State since the 2003 season.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Axel Lagerlaf, Northern Illinois
