TOLEDO, OH - Toledo utilized an 11-0 run that stretched both halves to spark a 74-59 victory over Alabama on Wednesday in third round of the WNIT before 3,740 fans in Savage Arena. With the win, the Rockets improve to 26-8 on the season and advance to the ‘Elite Eight' of the postseason tourney. UT will play the winner of Thursday's contest between Mid-American Conference member Eastern Michigan-Syracuse on Sunday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. home.
Tickets for the fourth-round contest will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. Admission to the postseason event is $13.00 for adults, $6.00 for children 12 and under and $6.50 for full-time UT faculty and staff (limit two per staff member). UT students will again be admitted free with their student ID, courtesy of the Office of the President.
The Rockets trailed 30-28 with 1:20 remaining in the first half, before going on the game-changing burst to keep their postseason alive. Senior Melissa Goodall and junior Naama Shafir started the run with a pair of charity tosses each for the final points of the first stanza. Senior Jessica Williams then converted a three-point play and Shafir delivered a basket and two more free throws to give the 2010-11 MAC regular-season champions a lead they would not relinquish.
Shafir paced five UT players in double figures with a game-high 19 points and five assists, knocking down 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe. Senior Jessica Williams contributed 13 points, senior Melissa Goodall had 10 points with eight boards, redshirt freshman Andola Dortch chipped in 10 points with a season-high nine caroms and junior Haylie Linn had 10 points off the bench to help the Midnight Blue & Gold record their second-consecutive victory over a SEC opponent.
