MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Rachel Denny, Western Michigan - Junior, Oakland Township, Michigan

Western Michigan junior Rachel Denny posted a perfect 3-0 week in singles as Western Michigan went 2-1, taking wins over IUPUI (7-0) and Bradley (6-1).  Denny has now won three straight singles matches, four of her last five, including five of her last seven. Against IUPUI on March 13, Denny dispatched Alisha Cummings 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match.  That helped WMU post a shutout 7-0 victory over the Jaguars in Indianapolis. Against Illinois on March 19, Denny was one of just two individuals to post a win in singles, notching a 6-2, 6-4 Midwest Region win over Leigh Finnegan in the No. 5 singles match.  Denny was also the first competitor in terms of order of finish. Against Bradley on March 20, Denny helped give the Broncos a winning record for the week by defeating Brigitte Graf 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match. Denny is bouncing back from a slow start to the year and is 8-12 overall, but is 5-4 since the calendar flipped to 2011.  Western Michigan has now won six of its past eight team matches.

Additional Nominees:

Maddy Eccleston, Bowling Green - Sophomore, Toledo, Ohio

Bowling Green sophomore Maddy Eccleston won handily at both singles and doubles as the Falcons swept Youngstown State, 7-0, in the lone match of the week. Eccleston teamed with senior Christine Chiricosta for an 8-2 win at the top doubles flight, then in singles, lost only two total games in her sweep of Youngstown State's Carolyn Jesko, winning her two sets at the second flight by identical 6-1 scores. The match marked her first action at the second flight this season and she has played primarily at the fifth flight this year. Eccleston now has a singles record of 18-7 this season, including a 9-3 mark in dual-match play. In doubles, Eccleston has a 17-7 record with Christine Chiricosta and an 18-7 ledger overall.  She ranks third on the team with 36 overall wins this year to date.

Toledo sophomore Alex Cristello won both her matches as the Rockets swept the Dayton Flyers 7-0 on Sunday. In singles play, Cristello defeated Dayton's Filbrandt in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and in doubles she paired with Kelsey Anonsen for an 8-4 win over Grote/Dickerhoff.
