MAC Wrestler of the Week
Dustin Kilgore, Kent State-Junior, Berea, Ohio (Berea High School)
Kent State junior Dustin Kilgore helped the Golden Flashes (14-5, 4-0 MAC) in a pair of one-sided conference victories over the weekend, recording falls in each dual. In a 30-6 Kent State win over Ohio, Kilgore pinned Erik Schuth in the second period. Schuth was ranked No. 11 by The Open Mat and D1CW. Two days later, Kilgore pinned Eastern Michigan's Travis Stanback in 17 seconds as Kent State went on to down the Eagles 30-3. With the victory, Kilgore moved into second place among Kent State's career win leaders with 127. The junior is 30-2 on the season with team highs of nine falls, nine major decisions and four technical falls. He has won in 48 straight dual meets and is 14-0 in career MAC duals.
Mark Lewandowski, Buffalo-Sophomore, Depew, N.Y. (Lancaster High School)
Buffalo sophomore Mark Lewandowski continued his breakout season with an 8-0 major decision over Eastern Michigan's Aaron Sulzer. The Depew, NY native used two takedowns, two near fall points and riding time to pull out a big decision. He then followed it up with another 8-0 shutout win at Central Michigan, beating Ryan Cubberly, to help key a Buffalo comeback early in the match. The sophomore is now 27-11 overall this season and 4-0 in MAC duals.
Chad Friend, Central Michigan-Junior, Leo, Ind. (Muskegon Community College)
Central Michigan junior Chad Friend moved up to 197 pounds for last Sunday's dual vs. Buffalo and earned a critical 7-3 decision over Josh Peters to help lead Central Michigan to a 19-14 win. In his first match at 197, Friend scored three takedowns and never trailed in the bout that gave the Chippewas a 16-14 lead in the team score. Friend had been competing at 184 pounds throughout the season and was just 2-13 overall entering Sunday's dual, but is now 2-1 against MAC opponents after Sunday's victory, his biggest of the season.
Nick Smith, Northern Illinois-Freshman, Ida, Mich. (Ida High School)
Northern Illinois freshman Nick Smith improved his record to 21-7 following two victories over the weekend helping lead Northern Illinois to a 57-0 rout of Knox College and a 40-3 victory over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Both of Smith's victories came by pin fall as he knocked off Francisco Munoz of Knox in 1:42, while dispensing of SIUE's Paul Myers in 1:36. Smith is currently riding a five match winning streak since returning to the lineup after missing two matches with an injury.
