MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
For Immediate Release-Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010
MAC Wrestler of the Week
Jimmy Hamel, Buffalo - Junior, Natick, Ma. (Natick High School)
Junior Jimmy Hamel faced his third nationally-ranked opponent in three straight bouts and pulled off the biggest upset of his career by defeating 12th nationally-ranked Eric Schuth of Ohio. Following a scoreless first period, Schuth scored the bout's first point to start the second period off an escape. Facing a 1-0 deficit to start the third, Hamel was able to roll out with a somersault away from Schuth's grasp for an escape to tie the bout at 1-1. With less than a minute remaining, Schuth would be docked a penalty point for locking his hands to give Hamel a 2-1 lead. Schuth was able to send the match to overtime by earning 1:19 of riding time. In the first round of the 30-second overtime, each would exchange an escape leading to a continuous battle. After scoreless 30-second overtimes, Hamel would rip away from Schuth's grasp in ultimate overtime for an escape to capture a 4-3 decision over the 12th nationally-ranked wrestler.
Ben Bennett, Central Michigan - Freshman, Rockford, Mich. (Rockford High School)
Redshirt freshman Ben Bennett went 2-0 in the Chippewas' two duals last week, earning bonus points in both wins. On Friday, Bennett posted a 10-0 major decision over Taylor Knapp in the Chippewas' 21-17 win at No. 15 Virginia Tech. At No. 25 Old Dominion on Sunday, Bennett pinned Eric Decker at the 4:06 mark to extend Central Michigan's lead to 20-6 in an eventual 23-14 win. Bennett improved to 14-5 on the season.
Andy Hartshorn, Ohio - Sophomore, Reynoldsburg, Ohio
Sophomore Andy Hartshorn had a great performance during Saturday's MAC dual meet at Buffalo. Bonus points proved to be the key of the match as the Bobcats (9-3, 2-0 MAC) and the Bulls each won five bouts, but Ohio earned three bonus point victories compared to Buffalo's two. Hartshorn's heavyweight bout was arguably one of the most important Bobcat victories, as he won six points for his team by pinning Jedd Mason in 3:52. Hartshorn is the current owner of a 21-9 record and has won his last four bouts.
Bryan Deutsch, Northern Illinois - Junior, Columbia City, Ind. (Columbia City High School)
Junior Bryan Deutsch extended his winning streak to six with a 7-3 decision over Steve Ross of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the Huskies 42-0 victory Friday night. Deutsch rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and rattled off six straight points to seal the victory.
